“It’s time the voters show Taib Mahmud the final curtain”

Malaysiakini | Jan 19, 2009

“It looks like there is now hope for Sarawak,” read a text message from a KL-based senior bank manager, a Lun Bawang, following PAS’ victory in the Kuala Terengganu by-election.

This was the second by-election victory for Pakatan Rakyat after the March 2008 general elections, confirming waning support for the ruling coalition.

The Orang Ulu bank manager was referring to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim-led Pakatan Rakyat’s campaign to wrest control of Sarawak from BN in the next state elections due at the latest by 2011.

He said: “The KT results confirmed for the second time, after Permatang Pauh, that the wind of change that swept the country on March, 2008 is real and here to stay.”

“In fact it is gathering strength instead of dying out as BN would hope!”

He added: “To the Sarawakians it says the moment of truth is now. It’s time the voters show (Chief Minister Abdul) Taib Mahmud the final curtain.”

There has been talk that the long-serving chief minister may call the state elections earlier. Although he has publicly ruled out elections this year, many believe it will be held to pave the way for his son Sulaiman, 39, the Samarahan MP and deputy tourism minister, to eventually take over from him.

‘Change in the making’

Almost without any exception, Sarawak PKR leaders and supporters said the Kuala Terengganu by-election results would be a big morale booster for Pakatan Rakyat.

In its major roadshows so far in places like Kuching, Sibu and Miri, PKR has proclaimed that ‘Change We Can’ and ‘Change is in the Making’.

Sarawak has 71 state assembly seats, of which eight are in the hands of the opposition (DAP 6, PKR 2) and one Independent (pro-BN).

Senior leaders of state BN component parties Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) have already warned their colleagues to take the threat from Pakatan Rakyat seriously.

Even within Taib’s own Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) some senior leaders have told the chief minister not to take the threat from PKR lightly.

But Taib doesn’t seem perturbed, said several political observers.

PKR has already penetrated far and deep into Dayak areas which represent a total of 28 state seats while DAP’s support among the Chinese, especially in urban centres, is growing.

DAP eyes Chinese majority areas

There are 17 Chinese majority and mixed state constituencies, most of which are likely to be contested by DAP with a few going to PKR’s Chinese candidates.

The Malay/Melanau areas with a total of 25 state seats would prove to be a tough nut to crack. Taib’s PBB has a strong hold on these seats.

But the vulnerable ones are said to be in and around Kuching – Simunjan, Gedong and Sibu – because of local issues and problems.

In the last state elections, PAS lost narrowly in one of the Malay seats in the Simunjan area.

A combined Pakatan Rakyat campaign could have a significant impact.

If the Pakatan Rakyat wins in Pensiangan (a by-election will be held if PBRS leader Joseph Kurup loses his appeal), that would further confirm a swing among the rural constituents towards the opposition and spell big trouble for Sabah BN in the next general elections as well.

In Sarawak, the opposition has played up various issues to great effect. This includes the growing disquiet over land issues Taib’s leadership, the wealth of top politicians in the state, cronyism, nepotism, corruption and marginalisation of various groups in business, the civil service and other economic opportunities.

PKR would continue with its roadshows ahead of the state elections and bring in their bigwigs, including the chief minister and mentris besar, to meet the locals.

Thousands had flocked the dinner gatherings in Kuching, Sibu and Miri to listen to Anwar Ibrahim and Selangor Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim.

Other road shows will be held in major towns in Sarawak with seminars in between to prepare party members for election work.

A senior party leader told Malaysiakini that they will expose their potential candidates at such gatherings and seminars to the grassroots.

“We believe the state elections could be held this year and so we must be prepared,” he added.

KT is not a benchmark

In a related development, Taib said results of the Kuala Terengganu by-election should not be used as a benchmark in any election, including the Sarawak election due in 2011.

The chief minister, who is also Sarawak BN chairperson, said it was not easy to make general recommendations from one event, including the need to rebrand BN to win the hearts and minds of the people.

“There is no such thing as a benchmark in any election and, judging by the results, although BN lost, the votes for BN were quite high in spite of the fact that many people tell me that the candidate was not well chosen or popular among the electorate,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Salam. Memang bagai diduga KT dalam genggaman. Walau pelbagai lakonan dipertonton oleh juak-juak BN agar rakyat terpedaya, namun pengundi KT sama bijak dengan pengundi PP. Tahniah.

Statement report on Taib Mahmud :

“The chief minister, who is also Sarawak BN chairperson, said it was not easy to make general recommendations from one event, including the need to rebrand BN to win the hearts and minds of the people.

    DAYAK MALAYSIA COMMENT:
No need to wake him (Taib Mahmud) up. Let him staying in the state of denial. Let him sleep with his “WEALTH” sucked from the people of Sarawak. Let him fill good and cool as he wanted to.

Please don’t wake him up. But thats not mean we let him enjoy the wealth gained in corrupted manner (if any).

We will only wake him up when we have power (won the State Election). We will wake him up with the service on him with INVESTIGATION paper.

“Sultan” Taib must be dreaming. His days are indeed numbered. He rules the land like his own and with an tight fisted that no one can say anything he does not want to hear. His hijacking of the State’s natural resources is unbelievable. And now he wants his son Sulaiman to succeed him? Says who? The State belongs to the people not him or his children. Wait till the next elections when the Sino-Dayak coalitions kicks him out! He and his family can then flee to Canada and Australia. The people will have their say. And their Day.

DSAI, Sarawak is there to be taken over, after 51 years ,these 2 states are shamefully behind in development, the wealth of these 2 states have been robbed by the BN regime all these years..,Sarawak Chief is a thief who have progress to be 1st class robber, this man have accumulated wealth beyond his means..sitting as the Chief Minister for more then 29 years is unbelievable…but then again..its not surprising …he has friends…Samy Vellu…another bandit and 1st class robber..is still holding tightly to his seat as MIC president..he can hold the seat till he dies..as the seat is irrelevant as he is..

Now is the time Datuk, the people are wide awake now and are fully aware of whats going around them, they will fully support you and Pakatan Rakyat to bring about the change that we seek to bring this great nation back to its track..BN has mislead and mismanage the country badly..corruption is a way of life in BN and a norm accepted from the top to the bottom level. This has to change ,we want this to stop..the country’s wealth should be spread out equally among the people of all races and religion. The country should be manage orderly and with a honest and trustworthy government for the nation and people…

We are here to back you up…go for it…the journey is tough and the barriers are much..but eventually we should be able to form a new government soon with you in the helm…All the best ..!!!! CHANGE WE WANT…!!!

If anyone try to denied the fact that the KT by election result will not affect Sarawak state election, HE IS IN THE STATE OF DENIAL.
    What PR now do in Sarawak are;
    1) Register all young voters (90% will vote for PR)
    2) Let all PR YB adopt all the 71 state seats in Sarawak.
    3) Let PR women wing (Pas, Dap, PKR) make a visit to Sarawak . The strenght in PBB is their women supporters and workers
    4) Establish a common website for Sarawak state election
    5) Call for young professional gathering in Kuching to explain the PR agenda more clearly
    6) will continue as partof strategy……………………

PR jangan dibuai mimpi seperti Taib…menang di PP dan di KT tidak akan membawa apa-apa makna sekiranya impian untuk ke Putrajaya tidak tercapai. Banyak lagi yang perlu PR usahakan. Walaupun demikian tanda-tanda amat positif…WORK HARD, real HARD. BN have the resources, they still believe that they can buy voters and candidates that challenges them. Last election, particularly in Sarawak many were bought over including opposition candidates. After PP & KT next is Sarawak. This would be the best opportunity to wrest Sarawak from the Taib regime because now he is ‘dalam buaian mimpi…’ and according to his bomoh he is indespensible….PR work hard, real hard…kalau nak tanam pokok buahan, tanamlah sekarang…beri baja cukup-cukup…hasilnya nanti akan berbaloi.

    DSAI,

    Sebagai seorang Melayu Muslim Sarawak, saya tidak kisah akan apa bangsa atau agama KM baru Sarawak sekiranya PR menang di Sarawak. Asalkan KM bukan seorang yang racist dan korup. Saya ada beberapa cadangan yang perlu diambil serius sekiranya PR ingin menang di kawasan DUN Melayu;

    1. Buat promosi agar orang muda mendaftar sebagai pengundi kerana masih ramai yang belum mendaftar.
    2. Cari calon yang sesuai dan bukan tangkap muat sahaja. Sekiranya, PKR menghadapi masalah calon terutama di DUN Melayu subbandar atau luar bandar seperti N3. Tanjung Datu, N4. Pantai Damai dan N5. Demak Laut yang peratusan pengundi Melayunya seperti Parlimen Kuala Terengganu, letaklah calon PAS sekiranya ada. Sebabnya, bagi kawasan Melayu, kami boleh menerima PAS atau PKR.
    3. DAP perlu menukar imejnya di Sarawak yang terlalu Chinese Chauvinist supaya tidak membantutkan sokongan orang Melayu Muslim. Jadilah macam DAP di Semenanjung.
    4. Berkempenlah dari sekarang dan jangan tunggu sampai hendak PRU Negeri.
    5. Jangan terlampau berkempen secara populis kerana dikhuatiri yang anda tidak mampu menunaikannya.
    6. Berhati-hati dengan orang-orang Tun Abdul Rahman kerana pada masa ini, beliau sibuk menghasut orang Melayu agar tidak mengundi PR. TAR merupakan Munafik terbesar di Sarawak.
    7. Jangan samakan kami dengan orang Melanau dan sebaliknya kerana anda tidak akan mendapat gambaran yang sebenar sekiranya berbuat demikian.
    8. Berusaha bersungguh-sungguh dan bertawakal kepada Allah.

Mesti lah takut, nanti orang Melayu yang jadi Ketua Menteri maka hilanglah legasi Sultan Taib..Kesian aku tengok Menteri Abg Johari.Kempunan lah beliau nak jadi Ketua Menteri…Si Jabu yang suka mengampu dan menyebut Yang Dikasihi 2,lagi lah kesian anak-anak Iban moden tengok..Memang akan jadi pemain reserve mati sampai bila-bila.Kalau ikut hierakinya, patut Datuk Patinggi Alfred Jabu ak Numpang 2 lah yang patut menggantikan Taib…
Geli hati mengenangkan corak dan pola kepimpinan pentadbiran Sarawak.Tapi itulah hakikatnya..Sampai bila ???Tunggulah sampai Doraemon menjadi DragonBall…

Dear Sarawakians, whose fault was it that caused the political and administrative awesomes to become so exaggerated in Sarawak which led to a rebellious feelings against the present leaders ?? Who else . . . if not OURSELVES to blame for wrongfully chosen the leaders since 45 YEARS ago by OUR OWN early generations. Therefore, We, OURSELVES have to rectify NOW so that the current scenario shall not repeat again. We, OURSELVES must first change, then never choose wrongly again. We, OURSELVES shall determine our our destiny. With only ONE VOTE, WE could change whoever WE wish whom would be able to bring good CHANGES to OURSELVES. Come on all Sarawakians . . . . WE must change the government of Sarawak ONCE AND FOR ALL . . . .

Anwar is a fool out with a grudge. I am sure that a lot of the leaders today are corrupted but as Malaysians we shouldn’t give power to angry politicians. Anwar lacks power to get back at his foes and by supporting him there is a great possibility that we will end up in a bigger mess.

There are many other solutions to Malaysia’s problems: Wisely choose your leaders.

As for Sarawak in particular i think the leadership has done a great job in improving the state and its people’s living standards. Don’t let your judgment be clouded, wisely choose your leaders
