Georgetown prof turned Malaysian opposition leader

Anwar Ibrahim, the man poised to become Malaysia’s new prime minister, is profiled in today’s Voice.

To start off, why are you attempting to remove the current government from power?

In a democracy, imperfect though it is in Malaysia, you need two legitimacies to govern: a moral legitimacy and a political one.

The moral legitimacy stems from your entire deportment whilst governing – transparency of conduct, rule of law, separation of powers, integrity of office bearers, and the like.

The political legitimacy results from your effective command of the electorate and its legislators.

The National Front of Malaysia, in power for 51 years now, has been oozing its moral legitimacy to govern for at least a decade now. The judiciary was corrupted, the police force became dysfunctional, the civil service was reduced to a rubber stamp, money politics infected political parties, and matters to do with race and religion became a minefield. The economy is sluggish, now approaching quagmire status and the government has offered no solution to the problem of widespread joblessness, rampant inflation and the decline in foreign direct investment. In sum a tragic state of affairs after 51 years of governance.

The National Front’s political legitimacy was premised on its command of a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Once before it lost that majority — in 1969 when race riots flared in the aftermath of that loss.

On March 8th this year, it lost that majority in the general election, the 12th in the nation’s history. A psychological threshold was breached and in its wake, there was mounting discovery that the emperor has no clothes.

The divestment of the moral and political legitimacy to govern has brought the National Front to the current impasse. The opposition coalition wants to end this stalemate by inviting government legislators to join in our campaign of national regeneration.

What are your thoughts on the current Prime Minister Mr. Abdullah Ahmad Badawi?

I’ve known the Prime Minister for many years and have found him to be a decent person – I hope I don’t sound patronizing – but wholly ineffectual.

Why do you believe the Prime Minister is unwilling to meet with you?

He thinks it will spell the death knell of his premiership. I’m trying to convince him that it’s more about national salvation than about the longevity or the lack, of individual political careers.

It is in his interest and the nation’s that he meets me and we discuss matters. The future, following a meeting with me, need not be less than emollient to him. In politics, you have to read the mood and the currents right. He has read and continues to read them wrong. He ought to opt for conciliation. Finality is not the language of politics.

Do you believe that the government’s decision to send 50 MP’s to Taiwan last week was designed to thwart your plans?

It was transparently and unabashedly that. It has led the public to think that the government is a troupe of court jesters.

Do you maintain your innocence with regard to the sodomy and corruption charges that have been brought against you at various times?

I have always maintained that they were a conspiracy – and to this date not a shred of evidence has been proffered to support the wildly speculative claims. With the government’s pervasive control of the official media, those charges – diabolical, trumped-up and patently false – have been given illegitimate currency.

This time, in the courtroom of public opinion, the veracity of those charges has evanesced faster than the government’s popularity. No one believes those charges save the ones whose political longevity is dependent on my being clapped in the slammer.

I must convey my sincere appreciation to those in the international community who have been outspoken in their criticism of the conspiracy launched against me. In that respect Georgetown University remains quite supportive to our efforts here.

What are your policy priorities and goals if you succeed in becoming Prime Minister?

In the main, it is the implementation of the Malaysian Economic Agenda, which is a program that will unite Malaysians by giving them more equality of opportunity. Their talents will flourish and the goal of a united nation that has eluded us for decades will become attainable. You get that insight — that people revenge the stifling of their talent in conflict — from the plays of Ibsen.

We must reestablish the integrity of our judiciary and take an uncompromising stand against corruption and cronyism. The economy is sluggish and lagging vis-à-vis our neighbors in Asean.  Foreign investors who once flocked to Malaysia are now uncomfortable with the prospects of a government that does not respect the rule of law and basic principles of the free market. Our education system has fallen into disrepair under the mediocre stewardship of political appointees.

We are committed to a humane economy – stimulate growth but ensure that the poor and marginalized do not slip trough the cracks. The excesses of capitalism have wrought havoc on global markets as we have seen once again in the latest turmoil on Wall Street. These crises have real impact on people – who can lose jobs, retirement saving and investment portfolios overnight. Our commitment to market oriented economic policies remains firm, but we will follow a course described by John Kenneth Galbraith as an appropriate dose of state intervention to rectify the social inequities attendant on the unbridled forces of the free market.

How was your time at Georgetown, and is there anything you’d like to share with the readers about your time at the University?

I spent a year and a half there. It was a decompression chamber for me after six years of unjust incarceration. I was able to crystallize much of the thought that swirled in me all that time in jail. The period I spent in Georgetown, teaching, reading and reflecting has fuelled my campaign to fight for a new dawn for my people in Malaysia.

I can’t help but recall my earlier visit to the campus in 1996 when I delivered a speech on the dialogue of civilizations and the need to achieve a Convivencia in the spirit and model of Andalusian Spain. To have been present on campus interacting with the diverse students and faculty in a stimulating intellectual and spiritual environment, I felt as though we were approaching that ideal.

I must convey my warm greetings to the students who honored me with their participation in my classes and to staff and administration who were unsurpassed in their kindness and hospitality to my family and I.

Finally, would you ever consider returning to Georgetown after the conclusion of your political career?

It would be a monumental task to decline another invitation by President DeGioia, a dear friend, to return to the hilltop for another bout of teaching.

But right now that’s a bridge too far. I’m certain to come back but in what capacity I can’t say. Georgetown will long remain in my memory as an idyllic place that gave me a renewal at a point in my life when it was most needed.

Kita nilai pentadbirannya selama 5 tahun. Kita hidup didunia ni bukan nak lama. Sekarang sdr Anwar dah 61 tahun.

rakyat benci anak- anak bekas PM seperti(najib, hishammudin, mukhriz, khairy

He is our brother, Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar is a changed man. I used to hate his gut when he wan in BN, he played the same tune as the draconian leader of Mahathir Mohamed, he just toed the line.

He had been hiding his true colour. Thanks to the turmoil, economic and political, of 1997-98, Anwar came to his true-self. Anwar was and is a fighter for the common folk.

Saya setuju kita perlu bersabar. Kenapa heboh sana sini tentang peralihan kuasa? Sekarang orang dah mula ketawakan PR. Saya sendiri tidak ambil peduli pun tentang tarikh 916. Suara saya dah lima kali mengundi tak pernah menyeberang kepada BN walaupun saya orang gomen. Sebabnya?

Can’t we all disagree more constructively?…” Seterusnya beliau menulis, “At a time when America faces enormous challenges at home and dangers abroad, our ability to work together, trust each other, and compromise for the common good is declining. Surveys show that Americans are not moving further apart in their attitudes about specific policy issues. Instead our leaders, our political parties, and our media outlets have become more polarized, strident, and moralistic (i.e., excessively concerned with morality and certain of their own virtue). When political opponents are demonized rather than debated, compromise and cooperation become moral failings and political actors begin to believe that their ends justify the use of any means. The disturbing image that many Americans have is that their leaders are more interested in fighting each other and scoring political points than in steering the ship of state..” Selanjutnya, beliau menganjurkan “moralistic politics”, dengan matlamat, “to promote “civil politics,” by which we mean politics in which power and ideas are hotly contested but opponents are respected as fellow citizens who are assumed to be sincere in their beliefs.”

Beliau memulakan pembicaraan beliau dengan…”Prompted by the shattering of the bonds between religion and the political order brought about by the Enlightenment, Jean-Jacques Rousseau devised a “new” religion (civil religion) to be used by the state as a way of enforcing civic unity. Emile Durkheim, by contrast, conceived civil religion to be a spontaneous phenomenon arising from society itself – a non-coercive force expressing the self-identify or self-definition of a people. In 1967, the American sociologist Robert Bellah rediscovered the concept and applied it to American society in its Durkheimian form. Ever since Bellah’s publication, most authors have sought to explain civil religion in terms of an alleged “spontaneous” integrative role for society. They have emphasized the religious and cultural dimension of the concept, but failed to give due consideration to its political-ideological foundations. Thus, the coercive potential of civil religion has received little attention or has been wrongly relegated to Third World countries.”

Cristi memberikan satu kritikan tentang tesis “civil religion” , dan, “identifies the most basic deficiencies of literature on this topic. By contrasting Bellah’s Durkheimian conception with Rousseau’s original formulation, the author discloses the dubious conceptual and empirical basis of the former.”

Dia seterusnya menjelaskan, “the need to rethink Bellah’s thesis in the light of a reinterpretation of Rousseau’s and Durkheim’s classical approaches,” dan ini sekaligus mengesahkan kritikannya tentang “ a brief comparative survey of state-directed civil religions,” dan “an informative case study of civil religion in Pinochet’s Chile.”

Selanjutnya, beliau menulis,”With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.”

Beliau, turut mengingatkan bahawa, “God has not been preparing the English-speaking and Teutonic peoples for a thousand years for nothing but vain and idle self-contemplation and self-admiration. No! He has made us the master organizers of the world to establish system where chaos reigns…

“Akhirnya, beliau merumuskan, “Above all else, the time has come for us to renew our faith in ourselves and in America. In recent years, that faith has been challenged. Our children have been taught to be ashamed of their country, ashamed of their parents, ashamed of America’s record at home and its role in the world. At every turn we have been beset by those who find everything wrong with America and little that is right…”

    Dear Dato,

I know that you will make it one fine day even though it is for only a term but you would have made the necessary changes in that one term that most leaders would not be able to do even if they are in power for 20 years or more. I am sure you know that it is the plain indoctrination that has put most of our Malay brethen in a position that is well inside the coconut shell. They just refuse to come out because if they do then they would have to deal with the powers that rule for being bold enough to think out of the shell. But they are improving, please start a training department in PKR to train and groom future leaders who can be leaders of all races. It is this co-operation and oneness that you had started and believed in which is seeing this result today. The Party must survive beyond you and it must be a place which every Malaysian has a place.

I have done some numerology calculations on your birth date, you are a natural leader but because your number 1 goes with number 3, you have also made a lot of sacrifices but as the number is, you are always a leader. God has tested you and time is with you, please lead the nation and make us believe in Malaysia again.

Malaysians should give him a chance to lead the country. Badawi and Najib are nowhere compared to this man named Anwar. God bless Anwar and God bless Malaysia. Saudara Anwar,
Georgetown Prof turned Opposition Leader is very well written. It summarises the political predicament in the country at the moment. I think it is an understatement to say that PM’s post should have been yours 10 years ago. For 10 years Malaysia has not progressed, the economy has been stagnant, our stocks market never recovered, FDI declined, corruption and crime rates increased, etc. etc. But for somebody who believes in fate, I think you are better off taking the helm 10 years later. Being 10 years older is 10 years wiser, more matured for sure, more cool but not so brand conscious (I cant see you wearing Armani suit now!), more conscientious, caring and understanding. But more important of all, fate had redesignated you NOT to be a PM from UMNO, a rotten party full of rotting members. Salam.

Buat masa ini kerajaan BN,bertenang dan menunggu kesilapan PR.Krn TDM telah memberikan sedikit perangsang.(cengkaman maut pro 80an)Lepas ikan kecil, tangkap ikan besar.Tetapi zaman sudah berubah, kaum BN hanya pakejnya cantik, tapi intimnya kosong.Walaupun mempunyai parti berbagai kaum, satu penyakit saja yg bermasalah.(perasuah, penyangak, penyalahgunaankuasa, penyelewengan, pengeboman{bom perang dunia kedualah bkn c4},penipuan terhebat diabad ini)Kalau bersungguhan nak tadbir, tolonglah tadbir dgn segala keikhlasan.Jgn tunjuk-tunjuk kuasa terhadap rakyat.Yg rakyat yg berikan kuasa.Tanpa rakyat hari ini masih belum merdeka.Apa salahnya, bagi rakyat sedikit perubahan ,Bantulah PR .Sudah 51 thn memerintah tak letih ke?Zaman skg semua kaum-kaum sehati sejiwa.(sbb nak lahirkan true Malaysian.bkn pakej saja.biasanya pakej-pakej tu hanya kemanisan sementara)Lepas pilihanraya umum,oh rakyat penggal depan kita berjumpa.Spt TDM kata kacang mudah lupa kulit.Bknnya rakyat tak menyokong, tapi demi utk melahirkan true Malaysian diharap kerajaan BN bertolak-ansur .Asas memerintah negara, utk membina dan membangunkan negara.Tak kisahlah siapa pemegangnya,yg penting hendak melahirkan true Malaysian.Seringkali ditanyakan asal negara, kita jawabnya Malaysians.Macamana nakjadi true Malaysian, sedangkan kerajaan BN masih bertegas dan langsung tak mahu berikan ruang.Haraplah satu hari, kerajaan BN akan berikan ruang utk true Malaysian.

    Hello Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,

Seriously, I think its time you introduce the PKR Exco team personnel in detail, one member every other day.

Since they are now the Ministers-in-Waiting, it would be good to hear your endorsement of them.

I would like to know why you think they will be capable of leading a Ministry. Thereafter, plse post a self introduction of each potential Minister for the rakyats’ viewing. It would be good to create a new website for this purpose.

I am not related to any political party, thus, you need not think otherwise of me.

It is very important for the rakyat to see and know the Dream Team in a better light, including their leadership qualities and judgemental capabilities.

Best regards to you and family

mungkin selepas tumbangnya kerajaan persekutuan pimpinan BN-UMNO,barulah DSAI keluarkan senarai nama kabinet baru tapi lebih baik adakan pilihan raya umum ke-13 terlebih dahulu bagi menentukan siapa yang layak jadi pemimpin negara baru adil, bersih dan cekap namanya.

Syabas Dato’ Seri.

US concerned over Malaysian use of internal security act
The government of US President George W. Bush views with “grave concern” Malaysia’s use of its tough Internal Security Act (ISA) as a possible way to stifle dissent, the State Department said Thursday.

Washington worries about “the possibility” that the act, which allows indefinite detention without trial, “might be used again to detain opposition political figures,” said spokesman Sean McCormack.

“The statement by a government figure that a leading member of the opposition had become ‘a threat to the economy and national security’ is extremely troubling,” said McCormack, referring to warnings by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who on Thursday called for a no-confidence vote against Abdullah.

Last Friday Malaysian police arrested Teresa Kok of the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP), Malaysia’s top blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, and a reporter with a Chinese-language newspaper under the security law, citing security concerns.

“The United States firmly believes that national security laws, such as the ISA, must not be used to curtail or inhibit the exercise of universal democratic liberties or the peaceful expression of political views,” McCormack said.

“The detention of opposition leaders under the ISA would be viewed by the United States and the international community as a fundamental infringement of democratic rights and values,” he added.

Just read Tan Sri Bernard Dompok’s comment on the withdrawal of SAPP from BN. His comments are open and honest. We prefer ministers of this type who are aware of what’s really going on, its causes and effects, rather than ones who hide facts fronm the public eye, fearing the loses as a result of exposing facts. The ministers who fear are immature and incapable of holding high office. Thanks Tan Sri Bernard Dompok for your open comment and keeping the public informed. We wish to have ministers with your calibre in office in future.

Never mind about the Sept 16 issue. It’s just a matter of time we see a new government in Malaysia. If there is a general election now, BN will lose heavily to PR. The economy now is not in favour of BN. BN leaders are not capable either. The world would want Anwar to lead the country. Malaysians want a change. The bridge isn’t too far away. Just be patient.

“With the will of the people, and support from a new government, Malaysia can change.”
This will be a change for the better, a milestone set for all to strive for in revolutionising Malaysia from one of subsistence, to one of economic leadership, not only within the ASEAN nation but throughout the world.

Malaysia is the best country in the Muslim world, to bridge the Gap of islamic misunderstanding to the west.

Malaysia is the most potential in generating clean palm energy fuels.

Malaysia is in the best position to utilise technological manufacturing to innovate and release globally renowned products.

Malaysia has so much potential. Barisan Nasional does not have the forsight to capitalise on it.

I believe Anwar, if he has his hat on correctly, can put Malaysia to be the envy of not only the Muslim and South East Asian world, but in general competativeness globally.

We need a leader who is strong enough to face the real issues.

We need a leader who isn’t afraid to critisize sensitive issues in the name of truth and fairness

We need a leader for change.
