Anwar: More support than needed to topple gov’t

From The Associated Press

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s opposition leader said Tuesday he has more than enough pledges of support from ruling coalition lawmakers to topple the government, and urged the prime minister to give up power voluntarily.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s claims — his strongest yet and seemingly beyond the likelihood of a bluff — signaled he could be on the verge of nudging the ruling National Front coalition from power for the first time since independence in 1957.

Earlier Tuesday, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi brushed off Anwar’s claims. “This is Anwar’s mirage. It is nothing. It is merely a dream,” he said.

Anwar’s People’s Alliance coalition won an unprecedented 82 seats in the 222-member Parliament in March general elections, 30 short of a majority. But during the last six months, he has been wooing disgruntled lawmakers from the National Front to defect.

“We have received firm commitments from MPs (members of parliament) in excess of the number required to form a new government,” Anwar told reporters. “It is increasing by the hour. I am not joking.”

Anwar refused to give an exact number or to name the lawmakers, saying they will be subject to harassment by the government or even detention.

He said the opposition alliance is now seeking a meeting with Abdullah to stake claim to the government and to give him the opportunity to exit gracefully.

Abdullah told reporters later he won’t meet Anwar until the opposition leader makes public the names of the defectors.

On Monday, Anwar told a massive rally of supporters that he is willing to give Abdullah one or two weeks to accept defeat and resign.

But “there is a limit to one’s patience, particularly when we have the numbers,” Anwar said Tuesday.

If Anwar pulls it off, it would signal a remarkable turnaround for a man once considered a star of Asian politics, only to be toppled in 1998 and imprisoned on a sodomy conviction. The conviction was overturned in 2004 after he had served six years in jail for a related corruption conviction.

He was seen as a political spent force until he stitched together an unlikely coalition of three diverse political parties, including his multiracial People’s Justice Party, last year ahead of the March 8 general elections.

Meanwhile, the ruling National Front coalition has been weakened by dissent against Abdullah, who lost much of his clout after presiding over the government’s worst-ever election results.

On Monday, Abdullah suffered another setback when the law minister resigned in protest against the use of a draconian security law to detain a journalist, an anti-government blogger and an opposition lawmaker on Friday.

Associated Press writers Eileen Ng and Julia Zappei contributed to this report.

    now I am really puzzled.

the 1st thing you said you had already 30 MPs to cross-over, but you failed to topple the ruling party on the 16 Sept. 2008. And now you are telling us you need more MPs to support to topple the government. So which is which?

Pls DSAI stop betraying any further to those who had already given you the unwithered support. I guess your words now are already telling.

Read carefully “budak jb”. The title says “More support than needed….” it means, there’s an excess (exceeding) the planned 30 MPs.

In other words to explain, the opposition parties has more than 30 MPs.

sudahla pencacai, u’re the one who’s confused … bodowi doesn’t have the mental processing power to compute and handle a crisis. look at the recent ISA arrests. just wtf is that? no wonder zaid resigned!

dsai is being the MAN, civilised, giving time bodowi to digest the facts, get his personal affairs (more like frantic transfer/hiding of wealth) in order and step down.

    To All DSAI supporters,

This is in response to the comments made by ORANG ASAL. Please read the article carefully. “More support than needed to topple the government.” is not the same as “….need more MPs to support to topple the government.” It simply means that there are already more than enough MP’s.

Please….read carefully before you leap to any conclusion!

As to the date of taking over, 916 signals the beginning of BN’s collapse. It can be likened to the date you were conceived…not the date you were born.

Come on Folks! You guys ought to have faith in Anwar.

What he is doing is to give Badawi face. He really wants

peaceful transition. If you look at the whole picture

he is treading very carefully. He knows what the BN/UMNO

government can do with the police and army at their

disposal. He wants to topple the government and in so

doing also wants to ensure that peace remains. How can

he disclose the names of the defectors at this moment.

Nobody is sure what the BN/UMNO government will do to

their own people who is defecting. You can use your

imagination. SO FOLKS, THE KEY WORD IS PATIENCE. WE

HAVE WAITED 51 YEARS. WHAT IS ANOTHER 51 days!

Reading the above article made me wonder …. Did the Creator stopped Anwar from becoming Prime Minister in 1998 because he was not ready?

After the hardship and humbling experience, he is perhaps a changed man; a more circumspective person; a humble person; and a more well-read person.

Maybe if he does assume the Prime Minister’s position, it is because the Creator has deemed ready and fit to take over the position.

If so, the Creator bless Malaysia!

The world is crumbling as we speak so enough sandiwara from everyone; just make the difference, step up and let’s move forward for a better Malaysia soon as possible before everything else crumbles. The country is bleeding and so are we.But we have been patient and calm so far. This is no time to cause any unnecessary stirs.

Most of us who are not personally involved in politics simply have no idea what sort of dark and dangerous forces are at play in the takeover scenario. Many who have embedded themselves in the rotting woodwork of Umno/BN are morally no better than maggots. They have neither HUMAN EMPATHY nor conscience – and therefore are not guided by ideals or ethical principles. They hypocritically use religion as a weapon, thereby cursing and insulting the Divine with etheir very foul-breathed utterance. They are poisoners and child-rapists and corrupters of all they touch. We cannot remove them by brute force – because (1) they control the brute force which is at present programmed to obey their voice as authority; and (2) we do not wish to become exactly like them!

Anwar & the other Pakatan leaders’ task, therefore, is to perform a complex and intricate dance combining many skills, to break the dark spell under which the majority of Umno leaders operate (yes, some may be likened to the Nazgul, the Ringwraiths in Tolkien’s epic tale, who became enslaved by Sauron after they succumbed to the temptation of earthly power). The timing must coincide with many variables, and multiple conflicting agendas, which means a degree of randomness must be factored in – hence, the difficulty of pinpointing a precise date. But on 16 Sept 2008, at the Kelana Jaya Stadium, the rakyat gathered there expressed their readiness for change and at that event the New Dawn agenda was anchored and set in rapid motion.

All of us are agitated, of course, by the totally indefensible abuse of the ISA as a weapon against Reformasi. RPK and Teresa Kok were targeted as a means of holding the nation ransom.
Do not doubt that we are dealing with criminals of the first magnitude, capable of murder in cold blood. Daylight robbery is a routine matter with Umno/BN. Yesterday I heard a rumor that one of Abdullah’s relatives did not succeed in transferring USD335 million into an offshore account. Assuming my source is correct, that is a clear indication that the panic at the highest levels is intense – despite the blank faces and outright denials in the mainstream media.

I feel DSAI made a mistake to anounce the date of 916 during the Permatang Pauh election.
He was too rush. Now,you can see Badawi has the preparation to defence, such as send the MPs to Taiwan for nonsense. He should do it quietly then anounce on 916.I think this can be done smoother.

According to our constitution, only three ways we can change PM:
    1. Untrusty vote in Parliment towards PM
    2. Agong ask PM to resign according to numb 1.
    3. Agong dismissed the Parliment (via advice frm PM) and set up new election.
I really disagree we change the government via hoppers (MP BN joint/cross over to PR). The best thing IF ANWAR’S STATEMENT REALLY, REALLY, REALLY TRUE is to urge new election which can be done by direction from Agong (via advice frm PM). Let THE WHOLE RAKYAT DECIDE who are they really want to be our Prime Minister and rulers…..It’s very upset to see our country become miserable like Thailand, Pakistan and so on..and we also as “Rakyat Marhaen” become suffer…but at the same time, for sure I also want to see NEW ERA but in proper way.

Have you ever heard the song by Bette Midler? It goes like this: (Editor please print the lyrics, I beg you so that the rakyat will know what it is all about, please do me a favor! IT IS INDEED A BEAUTIFUL SONG!)

    SONG ENTITLED: FROM A DISTANCE
    SINGER: BETTE MIDLER

From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
    And the eagle takes flight

From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land.
It’s the voice of hope, it’s the voice of peace,
It’s the voice of every man.

From a distance we all have enough,
And no one is in need
And there are no guns, no bombs, no disease
And no hungry mouths to feed.

From a distance we are instruments,
    Marching in a common band.

Playing songs of hope, playing songs of peace,
They’re the songs of every man.
God is watching us, Gid is watching us,
God is watching us from a distance.

From a distance you look like my friend,
    Even we are at war.
From a distance I cannot comprehend,
What all this fighting is for.

From a distance there is harmony,
And it echoes through the land.
And it’s the hope of hope, it’s the love of loves.
It’s the heart of every man.

And God is watching us, God is watching us,
God is watching us from a distance.

Oh, God is watching us, God is watching
God is watching us from a distance.

Ameen ya rabbul alamin. (So be it, God of all Heavens)

    Knowledgeable Sdr Editor, Sir
If you truly read with the deepest understanding (I mean truly DEEP than the DEEPER)the Godly and pure message is indeed in these lyrics. So, Please PRINT IT. There is nothing SEDITIOUS…it’s only WORDS (by the BEE GEES?) and their true Godly meaning for all to appreciate and understand. Please grant my request for all Malaysians who truly love genuine peace and harmony in this God-given and Blessed (di Rahmati Allah SWT) nation called Malaysia …not Bolehland!
