KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) — Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on Saturday led demands for the government to end a crackdown that saw the arrests of an opposition politician, a blogger and a journalist.
The arrests on Friday under tough internal security laws raised fears that the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition will launch a widespread campaign against dissent as it faces an opposition bid to seize power within days.
Rights groups have condemned the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA), which allows for indefinite detention without trial, and the United States summoned Malaysia’s top envoy in Washington in protest.
Anwar, who is trying to sign up enough defecting lawmakers to topple the government, said it was running scared after March general elections that handed his opposition alliance unprecedented gains.
“Instead of pursuing a reform agenda it has chosen to burn the country to save itself and to maintain its odious grip on power,” he said in a statement.
The three arrested have been accused of inciting ethnic tensions in the multicultural country, but Anwar accused the government of stirring up a phony racial crisis in order to deflect attention from its own problems.
“We ask the government how far it is willing to go to usurp justice and destroy the institutions of good governance in its attempt to drive the Malaysian people against each other,” he said.
Anwar insisted he has the support to seize power, but indicated that the timing of his parliamentary coup, slated for next Tuesday, could be affected by the ruckus.
“The priority is political stability. It’s not an issue of deferring, we have the numbers to move,” he told a press conference, adding he was “mindful” that he too could be targeted with arrest.
Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar denied the detention sweep was aimed at suppressing dissent and said the police had moved to secure public order as tensions rose and people started to hoard food.
“This country is multiracial and their relations can be fragile,” he told a press conference. “If the police feel public order is under threat or possible conflict could occur in the country, they will take preventive action.”
Syed Hamid said that the journalist, 32-year-old Tan Hoon Cheng from the Chinese-language Sin Chew Daily News in northern Penang state, was released Saturday afternoon.
“She is not a security threat,” he said, adding that one of the reasons she was taken into custody was because “we received reports her life was threatened.”
Tan was thrust into the national spotlight after reporting on an outburst from a ruling party member who called ethnic Chinese “squatters” and was disciplined by the ruling party which represents Muslim Malays.
The arrest drew rare condemnation from the Malaysian Chinese Association, the second-largest political party in the Barisan Nasional, which said the ISA may need to be abolished.
“MCA is dismayed, disappointed and shocked with the ISA detention of Tan Hoon Cheng,” said Ng Yen Yen, head of the MCA’s women’s wing.
Syed Hamid said investigations would continue into the other two detainees and “if there is no reason to hold them they will be released within 60 days.”
Opposition lawmaker Teresa Kok, 43, from the Chinese-based Democratic Action Party, a member of Anwar’s opposition alliance, was arrested over allegations that she complained about the noise of morning prayers at a mosque.
She has said the accusation is “preposterous”.
The third detainee is Malaysia’s leading blogger, 58-year-old Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who has repeatedly targeted government figures on his website “Malaysia Today”.
He has already been charged with sedition and defamation after linking Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife to the sensational murder of a Mongolian woman.
Three Malaysian newspapers — Tan’s Sin Chew Daily News, The Sun, a free English-language daily, and Suara Keadilan, which is published by the opposition — were also Friday threatened with suspension.
“This, together with the arrest of Raja Petra under the ISA, may be viewed as a chilling message that our fundamental freedoms are not secure,” said Ambiga Sreenevasan of Malaysia’s Bar Council.
Now the United States summoned Malaysia’s top envoy in Washington in protest.

After DSAI and PR voiced loudly about the unlawful ISA detentions, now only MCA has found its voice. In fact MCA, should have stopped the arrest of the reporter right from the bginning. After all the hoo haa, and the harm has been done, then MCA comes out to champion the cause. Come on MCA stop the hypocrisy!

S’dara Shobhan, I ingat mejority orang china memang da tahu itu rancangan MCA juga. Sabahagian besar sebab yang jadikan masalah perkauman di antara china dan melayu in past adalah kerja yang tidak bijaksanaan peminpin peminpim “ceh-kai” in the past. I rasa bersnang hati sekali apabila bersempang sama sama jiran melayu di kawasan kediaman saya. Padahal, mereka semua ini da berpihak kepada anti- BeEnd.

Both of them are innocent for this arrest. Why need to detain them for 60 days? Especially Teresa Kok, who is the MP and ADUN, got many things to do. She must be released soonest possible.The arrest will create more emotion by the Msian in BN. Hope DSAI can go something for the people of Malaysia in forming the new government for a new hope.

We need to protest this ISA issue, just imagine waht a stupid excuse the home minister gave on Tan’s arrest, The way we can show our anger is simple and will also will not provoke the law. Go to work but stop shopping and roaming the street, let the streets of Malaysia be deserted and no visiting open houses if pakatan can’t make it then, lie low and avoide celeberating the coming festivals, I am just going for my Idd prayers and back home if pakatan is not in power by than, its fasting month so we muslims need not go out for lunch, and to my non-muslim brothers and sisters finish food and back to your offices, shopping can be always be done after Pakatan takes over power.

News of this great found idea was circulated wide and far. In an immediate response, a housewife who has been in debt with Ah Loong (Malaysia money lenders) has pleased with the Malaysian Home Minister that she would like to be arrested as soon as possible under ISA.
In Singapore, an accountant asked the Singapore government to introduce this new law soon, so that innocent people could find protection from the undesirables. Polis dah jadi talibarut BN, bukan lagi penyelamat bagi keselamatan orang ramai tapi dah jadi macam anjing-anjing yang menyalak dan mengiggit. BN dah jadi macam babi yang berkuasa menggunakan jentera-jentera seperti ISA, polis untuk menunjukkan kuasa gilanya yang hanya nak menerkam saja. Slogan BN dah jadi seperti ‘All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others’ yang sama ertinya seperti semua orang sama, tapi BN dan kuncu-kuncunya lebih dari yang sama. Phuuuh. The current BN Government is more dangerous than Bin Laden. It has totally lost its rationale in what they do by using draconian laws ISA as they choose. Rakyat are suggesting that BN leadership be put under ISA bcos the country has been taken into the route of destruction and increasing racial tensions by doing Irrational things.

This is evidence of BN-Law. One BN member made seditious remarks only got away with 3 year suspension. Another one making false allegations to stir up racial & religion issues, still get to go for more botox. Malaysian Law does not exist. In exist only as toilet paper to these guys. The other classic case was the other Klang palace that our beloved Selangor Sultan never knew about. These BN members even dare to do things to insult the Sultan. So, you can imagine what they dare to do. When they are not allowed to do, they become like angry children; similar to when you stop giving sweets to a 2-3 year old. They retaliate. BN members are immune to BN-Law. BN-Law is guilty until proven innocent. The only tension is within BN, not the rakyat. The rakyat want to get on with their livelihood. The real issues of the rakyat were ignored since the 12th GE results. BN must realise that Malaysia do not belong to them. Even the Father of Malaysia (God bless his Soul) is not a member of BN. After the article by RPK, we now know why he left BN. It is actually quite a sad story. It goes to show that BN only has these as priorities: power, greed & money. If they go, they want the country to go with them.

Satu Detik yang sangat membransangkan berlaku apabila hampir kesemua 50,000 orang yang hadhir pada pagi hari pencalonan DSAI di Permatang Pauh – Rakyat Jelata Semua Bangsa – Melayu, Cina dan India masing-masing dengan Perasaan Gembira skali memukul gendang tradisi mereka, menari dan Meraikan suasana hari yang bersejarah itu masih memutar2 “replay” dalam ingatan saya !
Suatu pemendangan yang bagitu mengasyikan ! Tiada perasaan benci, sangsi atau marah. Hanya keGembiraan, KeSeronokkan dan perasaan Muhibbah yang Hebat skali!
Alangkah baiknya kalau perasaan sebegini boleh dirasai oleh seluruh masyarakat di seluruh Malaysia, Sabah & Serawak?
