KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Public confidence in Malaysia’s political and economic future has dwindled dramatically in recent months, with the prime minister’s popularity hitting an all-time low, a survey showed Friday.
The independent Merdeka Center research firm found that only 28 percent of registered voters polled in July felt encouraged by the country’s direction, a severe fall from 68 percent in late February.
The center said its nationwide survey of 1,030 adults was conducted by telephone July 4-14 and had a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
Fifty-four percent were displeased with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s performance, compared to 42 percent who were satisfied — Abdullah’s worst approval rating since he took office in 2003, said the center’s director Ibrahim Suffian.
The results follow a public backlash over the government’s decision to hike gasoline prices by 41 percent in June and persistent uncertainties after Abdullah’s ruling coalition lost its longtime political dominance in March general elections.
“People feel bad about economic issues. They are concerned that the political bickering in this country is not helping to generate solutions,” Ibrahim told The Associated Press.
Only 8 percent of respondents said current consumer prices were acceptable and 20 percent expect the economy to improve next year, highlighting the impact of inflation that spiraled to 7.7 percent in June. It was the steepest climb in more than 27 years.
In an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday, Abdullah acknowledged the problem of inflation has become “regarded as a weakness of the government today,” adding that his administration is considering lowering retail fuel prices despite its high subsidy bill.
In another blow to the government, 66 percent of respondents thought that a recent sodomy accusation against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was politically motivated to disrupt his career, the Merdeka Center said.
Anwar insists the accusation by his 23-year-old former aide was part of a government plot, but Abdullah and other leaders deny any conspiracy. Police completed their investigation into the allegation Thursday, but government prosecutors have not announced if Anwar would be charged.
Only 11 percent of the Merdeka Center’s respondents believed the sodomy accusation, compared with 55 percent who thought it was false. The others were unsure or did not respond. Only 31 percent were confident that police would handle the case in a fair and transparent manner.

DSAI,
I’ll be there this Sunday at Seberang Jaya.

Honour/Honesty
Same old sodomy story. Just different actors. It is not going to work. Those who are hoping that it would work would be rather stupid. Lets go DSAI! All the way to Putrajaya. I support and salute you.
The BN government has no further mandate to rule this country. Whatever mandate that the rakyat had given the BN had been misused. No, not a single voter would vote to increase the price of petrol and diesel. The voters did not vote in the BN government to facilitate the government to hike the prices of consumer goods and other goods especially agricultural-related products.
This BN government has either to tender their resignation or declare a new election.
The Anwar Ibrahim sodomy case is simply a mockery of police professionalism, no one believes that the police investigations are a fair game, and no one believes that Najib was not behind the scene.
The Altantuya case — the three stooges are being charged for the crime committed by unseen hands. The unseen hands have been identified but the police are lacking credibility in professional investigation.
The muzakarah UMNO-PAS is a clear sign that the BN needs a third party to its help. Thanks, PAS is not interested!
You can bet your bottom dollar that Badawi will just ignore the findings of this survey just as he had ignored all the legitimate complaints and grouses of the people before the last general election and paid the heavy price of UMNO/BNs heavy reverse. Let him continue to sleep and dream and to wake up to him himself and UMNO/BN in the opposition !!
Every system of government must have exit options so leaders like Abdullah and Bush do not overstay their welcome.
In reality I think it could be more. People who use to be like me(neutral) is like me now - dissapointed and disagree with a lot of their(govt) decisions (not only petrol hike). The comments and indicisions keep coming back disappointing.I use to laugh about those decisions but in reality it’s not a joke. It’s all about Malaysias’ future.Let’s pray some good will come out from all this and I hope the good will come fast. Ex-Neutral.
AAB’S POPULARITY IS LIKELY TO DIP FURTHER AS MALAYSIANS ARE BECOMING INCEASINGLY AWARE THAT HE SEEMS TO HAVE LOST ALL CONTROL AND POWER OVER THE POLICE FORCE AND AG’S CHAMBERS. THE GENERAL PERCEPTION OF THE MAN -IN- THE- STREET IS THAT HE IS TAKING ORDERS FROM HIS SUBORDINATES.. AND HE IS TOO INCOMPETENT TO MAKE HIS OWN DECISIONS. HE IS THE PM WITHOUT POWER IN A POLICE STATE.
THE PM”S POPULARITY IS GOING TO DIP FURTHER.HE SEEMS TO HAVE LOST ALL SENSE OF DIRECTION WITH HIS LIP-FLOP DECISIONS ON MAJOR NATIONAL ISSUES. HIS CALLOUS INDIFFERENCE TO THE PLIGHT OF THE POOR RAKYAT DUE TO MISMANAGEMET AND RAMPANT CORRUPTION ….. HIS APPARENT INABILTY TO GET HIS PRIORITIES AND FACTS RIGHT IN MATTERS RELATING TO HIGH PROFILE CASES…HIS INCOMPETENCE IN MANAGING LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITES WHO BLATANTLY AND DEFIANTLY ABUSE AND MISUSE THEIR POWERS TO INTIMIDATE AND VICTIMISE INNOCENT PEOPLE FOR ‘PERSONAL’ REASONS. HE SEEMS HAPPY TO BE PM WITHOUT POWER IN A POLICE STATE.
There is lawlessness at all levels of govt. from the highest to the lowest in the civil service, is what I see at the end of the day. With every piece of news I gather daily, I have come to conclude the govt and civil service is crumbling because the people at the helm are not focussed and have misled their subordinates and even the public sector into believing that corruption, deceit, bribery, falsehood and manipulation are acceptable ways of life in Malaysia. It is this impression that has led to the creation of an effective network of corrupt officials to emerge within the highest offices in the civil service such as the judiciary, the police and law enforcement agencies and maybe even the defence ministry.
If one asks the man on the street about getting a license to operate a business, he says,” I have to pay under the counter money to the govt. official to get the job done fast enough for me to operate. Otherwise I may have to wait until the cows come home.” This example is just the tip of the iceberg. If one want to see the magnitude of this problem, in its different forms in our society today, then this page is not enough. So you see, I am not surprised when Lingam went, ” It looks like me, sounds like me, but it’s not me.” This form of going around the mulberry bush is also apparent with the others also involved in Lingamgate issue. Statements like, “I can’t remenber but I think…….,” also amounts to evading from the real issues at hand and making the question put forth as irrelevant and unimportant. So you see, our country and its current law enforcement is nothing but a farce!!!!!
When a country’s laws are violated by a few corrupt officials, the citizens are at a loss. The citizens are left at the mercy of the few in power and become victims of injustice. The citizens live in constant fear and are unable to stand up for what is fair and just. This will again lead to other forms of abuse and terror. So we as citizens are morally obliged to correct a failing govt and make our country safe for all, irrespective of colour, creed or religion.
So as rakyat of this lovely land called Malaysia, I feel that DSAI is actually doing the nation a good deed by preventing any form of political tsunami from occurring. He is acting at the right time before the situation goes out of control. Don’t you think I’m right in supporting DSAI?
He had never been popular among the educated Malaysians young and old anyway. How can you expect him to be more popular with his constant flip-flops and lies (the announcement on the increase in the prices of petroleum, AG and IGP not involved in DSAI investigations?) now. He wants to be one of those Arabs like Muammar Gaddafi with his own version of Islam called Islam Hadhari but ended up with a big ideological joke called “Islam Ada Hari”. What kind of popular Prime Minister is this? He should have bought a big private Airbus, put it on auto-pilot, go to the cabin and sleep the whole flight to eternity.
Poor badawi.. he couldnt see that he is not in control. Rakyat know who they want. UMNO’s success story is for the THEN umno.. UMNO now is no longer fight for the right of people like the THEN umno.. UMNO now in more interested in APs, Mercedez Benz, Mega project and ‘anak menantu’.
In short, its not about rakyat that become ‘the ichiban’.. they-UMNO doesnt care about rakyat; they care about their (UMNO) own bank account.. and obviously will fight whoever that could hinder them from retaining their comfort zone. Its not a surprise that they tried to stop Anwar.. but even Anwar was jailed; it will revealed the true colors of UMNO..
It’s time for a change. Don’t reform but TOTALLY CHANGE. It is for the future of our kids that one day going to be the leader to decide the path of the country in the future. The ruling government now, (BN) is lack of candidate that can guarantee the future of M’sian. All they know is PROYEK-PROYEK (Project-Project) like Lim Keng Yeik said and would end up only “kroni” in the Parti or Gov. will benefit weather elite malay (UMNO), chinese (MCA) or india (MIC). Just name me one Minister or kabinet members from BN doesn’t involve with BIG PROJECT. I’m giving this comment because I’m now a proud low… oops sorry, … no income earner due to the increase of inflation by the petrol hike. The business that I own is going down the drain. Thanks to Pak Lah. Now in Malaysia there is no more middle income class society. Thanks again to Pak Lah and the Gov. Just feel sad because the one that introduced Islam Hadhari, Gemilang dan Terbilang is yet still using the same judiciary and law system set up by the TUN Mahathir for his benefit. At the same time he is not in a good terms with the former PM. Ask your self where does Pak Lah stand with the ISLAM HADHARI. Ask him to teach Islam attitude to his son in law first.
Up until today, Ikan Kembong = RM10.50 per/kilo, Selar Kuning RM12.50 per/kilo, Beras RM10 per/kilo, Minyak masak maybe no stock, Bus fare going up, this will then apply to School Bus, Taxi and other mode of transportation. Electrical Tariff will increase. IPP loughing to the BANK. BLR increse. Petrol RM2.70 per/litre. Food price increase. Thank you Pak Lah. According to Mat Noor the Finance Minister that Malaysia Economy is still ok and I don’t know who is he going to bluff.
Yet the Government said, CHANGE LIFESTYLE but I didn’t see any statement saying all the Minister and Cabinet members also CHANGE LIFESTYLE except for Terengganu State Govenment that Pak Lah cannot even control. How he can manage the whole Malaysia. Ha…ha…ha…
Well last but not least, I hope DATO’ SERI ANWAR can take MALAYSIA TO A NEW DAWN as soon as possible. Please let us out from this suffering. I am a Bumiputera and I don’t beleive in Bumiputera privilege because I have been “Merempat kat Negara sendiri” for to long. I don’t want my kids to suffer like me. Promise them a better life and future, become a real Muslimin and Muslimah. Will support you all the way for Permatang Pauh seat.
p/s regards to CHOMBI

DSAI, banyak kerja hendak dilaksanakan. Tak tertidur dibuatnya kiranya DSAI serius untuk mencapai cita-cita. Rakyat Malaysia rata-rata rajin dan kuat bekerja. Point us the way, Show us the way, Lead us, Unite us… we’ll all work hard to be at par or better than the Japanese! insya-Allah!
UMNO… Dulu atau Kini atau Selamanya Tak Relevan? Sebab ini bukan UMNO 1946!
Nonetheless, a small reminder before every rakyat’s dream become reality, “Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutelyâ€. Thus, always remember Allah up above, and remember us down below!
PM and all his BN allies treat the sarawakians as a second class citizen. even the foreign workers in this country get more benefits from the government. We’ll see if the BN still can hold on in the next coming state election. Hidup Pakatan Rakyat.
It’s natural. If you hate or dont like someone you’ll curse and swear but if you like him or her you’ll talk highly of that person. It’s a fact and your conduct don’t lie.
It’s time to change, we need to change for the better. PM AAB, this is no ‘Bluff’, take the report to bed and stick that to your office wall as an example to be follow by the rest of your ‘Cabinet Menteri’. Help won’t come from the Police or Army but the People OF MALAYSIA will teach you a lesson that you will never forget.

Why so many Malaysians oversea? I was in US, China, Australa. Born in Malaysia but cannot find opportunity in my own country. So sad because of the racist government. We could have pour in millions of dollars into the economy but look at the corruption b4 we invest 10% go to Samy Vellu and government officials and traffic jams and this lah that lah and the ‘nanti nanti kan’ attitude t the government get passport also a few days or weeks unless pay the officials. Police fine no need to pay at Balai Polis pay for “Tai Ko” got discount. What the heck with Malaysia government? In Australia “permanent residents” has more right than a chinese citizen in Malaysia. Now people want to apply for PR ‘Permanent Resident” or PR “Pakatan Rakyat”. DSAI save Malaysia for ALL.
bravo dsai…long live..our beloved malaysian people please unite..
