MYSinchew.com – (Letter To Editor) The arrest of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at 1pm, one hour ahead of the given deadline of 2pm by the police is uncalled for. The police should have at least waited until 2pm before they arrested on Anwar Ibrahim. Why the hurry to pick up Anwar at 1pm?

From newspaper reports, it clearly shows that it only took 15 minutes to ferry Anwar from his house in Bukit Segambut to the Police Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur (IPD KL). Even on a busy day, it may only take 30 minutes to an hour to reach the IPD KL.

What is important is that Datuk Seri Anwar presented himself up for the interrogation, instead of showing that the police have the power to arrest! Even if Anwar was late by 10 minutes due to heavy traffic jam caused by the police themselves or lack of their presence, what’s the big deal? Malaysians are used to arriving for appointments late by even half-an-hour, including some a few cabinet ministers.

The attempt to smear and defame Anwar Ibrahim has been thoroughly rejected by the international community.  Statements condemning the arrest of Anwar Ibrahim  and stating concerns over the credible dispensation of justice have been made by  groups which view they entire conduct of this case as suspiciously, similar to the fraudulent allegations made in 1998.

Open letter by prominent Muslim leaders in support of Anwar Ibrahim
We, the undersigned, believe the honorable brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim to be of the highest ethical and moral integrity, a devout Muslim and a devoted father and husband. He is universally recognized as an advocate for justice and fairness, and he has a long history of promoting Islam and championing Islamic ethical and charitable causes.

International Crisis Group
The International Crisis Group condemns the arrest of our Board member, Anwar Ibrahim, former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. Anwar Ibrahim was arrested outside his home in Kuala Lumpur on 16 July 2008 on charges that are obviously politically motivated, relating to his position as an opposition leader. Though released on bail the following day, the allegations against him remain and are clearly a deliberate attempt to smear him. We call on the Malaysian government to drop the charges against Anwar Ibrahim and for its leaders not to improperly use the police and judiciary for their partisan purposes.
Signatories include Gareth Evans, Ambassador Thomas R Pickering, and Lord Patten of Barnes

AccountAbility
AccountAbility’s Chief Executive, Simon Zadek: “We are seeing declines in almost every international indicator of good governance and citizens’ confidence in the democratic process. Malaysia has a unique opportunity to lead the way, in Asia and globally, in demonstrating how complex societies should manage their affairs”…

AccountAbility asks that the Malaysian Government provide exemplary global leadership at this pivotal moment in the nation’s history – by advancing the principles and practice of good governance and accountability advocated by our Honorary President, Anwar Ibrahim and so many other global leaders.

Senator Joe Biden
“A decade ago, the spectacle of Mr. Anwar’s mistreatment and imprisonment on transparently political grounds greatly discredited Malaysia in the eyes of the world community. The action tarnished the reputation of then-Prime Minister Mahathir Muhammad. I certainly hope that the current Prime Minister, Abdullah Badawi, does not repeat the mistakes of the past. I urge him to drop this political attack on a respected opposition figure, and commit himself to rule of law and good governance in Malaysia.”

National Democratic Institute and International Republication Institute
“The arrest of political leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 16 is of great concern to us and the international community. A similar charge that was filed against him 10 years ago was ultimately overturned by the Supreme Court. The timing of the current charge is of particular concern given his re-emergence on the national political scene since the ban on his involvement in politics expired in April 2008. We hope that the investigation into the allegation is not used as a political tool to silence an outspoken government critic. It is essential that the investigation is conducted in a transparent and fair manner that upholds the rule of law, and affords Mr. Ibrahim full protection of his legal rights. We also urge the citizens of Malaysia to remain calm and pursue resolution of their concerns over his arrest in a peaceful manner.”

BERNAMA

From Asia Post , Dhaka, editorial, dated 18.7.08

BBC has reported that Malaysian police have released opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on bail after he was arrested over allegations of sodomy.

His lawyers said he had left custody, but could still face charges. He spent a night in detention having been arrested by police for questioning over the allegations, on which he had been due to make a statement. Mr Anwar urged his supporters to remain calm. He denies the allegations, saying they are politically-motivated.

His arrest is likely to exacerbate the political tensions that have emerged since the opposition’s unprecedented gains in the general election of March 2008.

The former deputy prime minister has been in a tense stand-off with police since a former male aide accused him of sodomy two weeks ago. Sodomy is a crime in Malaysia and is punishable by 20 years’ imprisonment .

[Part 2 and 3 below]

Perbicaraan tahun 1998-99, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim terpaksa berhadapan fenomena pemalsuan keterangan DNA.

International Herald Tribune – KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has provided an alibi to police to prove he did not sodomize a male aide but will not give a DNA sample for fear it could be manipulated to frame him, his lawyer said Friday.

DNA evidence was fabricated when Anwar was similarly accused of sodomy 10 years ago, and he does not trust the police not to do it again, his lawyer, Sivarasa Rasiah, said.

The new sodomy accusation against Anwar comes as the government is faced with growing public anger with the ruling coalition, which suffered election losses in March to a resurgent opposition. Anwar has vowed to build on that victory and topple the government in September.

From the South China Morning Post

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — Yesterday’s arrest of de facto opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim throws Malaysian politics into dangerously familiar waters, with supporters of the popular politician accusing government figures of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at preventing him becoming prime minister.

The accusations of sodomy echo similar charges levelled against Anwar in 1998, when he was deputy prime minister to his one-time political benefactor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Then, after falling from favour, he was beaten by police and served six years behind bars. He was convicted of corruption, but eventually cleared of the sex charges.

ABS-CBN Manila - Former president Joseph Estrada has expressed sympathies over the arrest Wednesday of his friend, former Malaysian deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, on sodomy charges.

“Like Anwar, former President Estrada was put in prison for charges that were unjustified and untrue in order to execute a power grab in 2001,” Estrada spokeswoman Margaux Salcedo said.

Salcedo said that according to Estrada, Anwar’s arrest was “politically-motivated” in light of the former Malaysian minister’s announcement of a political comeback this September.
