STRATFOR-Anwar’s Trojan Horse

Stratfor is a leading source of global intelligence on geopolitical and geostrategic events.

Summary
Malaysia’s coalition government cracked down hard on a troublemaking minor coalition member party June 26, for proposing to introduce a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. This is likely an attempt to ward off a Trojan Horse strategy that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is using to exploit the fissures inside the ruling body.

Anwar : Growth of Dubai is unbelievable

Khaleej Times Online DUBAI - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, former deputy prime minister of Malaysia, yesterday said his country had a major role to play in solving the Darfur crisis as Malaysia is a beneficiary of oil from Sudan’s troubled region.

Anwar, who is visiting Dubai for drawing investment to Malaysia from the Gulf, told Khaleej Times that he was not satisfied with Malaysian government’s efforts over Darfur. China has the major role to play to resolve the Darfur issue.

Malaysia’s Anwar vows to oust govt, cut fuel price

DUBAI (Reuters) - Malaysian opposition figurehead Anwar Ibrahim said on Friday he would press ahead with a campaign to topple the government and would cut fuel prices if he took power.

Anwar, who says he has parliamentary backing to bring down the government, said his supporters included senior defectors from the ruling coalition. He said he also had growing support from the oil-producing areas of Sabah and Sarawak.

“We do have the numbers but the issue is when to move on the no confidence vote… It can be weeks to months,” he said.

Anwar Seeking `Redemption’ as Champion of Malaysian Equality

June 13 (Bloomberg) — Confined to a wheelchair by a police beating and facing corruption and sodomy charges, Anwar Ibrahim wasn’t about to let his jailer spoil a good photo opportunity.

“He scolded me for blocking photographers and preventing supporters from shaking his hand,” says Ahmad Romli, recalling the 1999 High Court appearance in Kuala Lumpur. “Anwar said his life was in politics and he would never surrender.”

Aquino, Estrada, Anwar: Evening of memories, Inquirer, June 8, 2008

By Fernando del Mundo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

THEIR TIES WERE BOUND IN GOOD TIMES and bad, and for one special evening they shared memories of triumph and tragedy.

There was Anwar Ibrahim, 60, former deputy prime minister of Malaysia. He had been thrown in jail for six years as he sought to become premier. He is now on the cusp of political restoration.

There was his wife Wan Azizah Ismail. She had struggled to seek justice for her husband who she said was jailed on trumped-up charges of corruption and sodomy. She had tried to fill the political shoes of her husband and became a member of the Malaysian parliament.

There was Corazon Aquino, now cancer-stricken, the icon of People Power revolutions in countries yearning to be free, and the widow of martyred opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino.

Wearing her trademark yellow, the former President was making a rare social appearance since it was announced that she would be undergoing chemotherapy, to attend a soiree in honor of one she had inspired.

Looking wan and even slighter than she did only a few months ago, Aquino nevertheless engaged in an animated conversation with Azizah during most of the evening. Continue reading ‘Tawa dan Air Mata di Manila’

Press Conference with Anwar Ibrahim - June 9, 2008 at new PKR Headquarters

Malaysiakini.com reported on the press conference quoting DS Anwar Ibrahim on the issue of crossovers to Pakatan Rakyat, “We have to appreciate the fact that we have to do it cautiously and knowing the fact that the system is quite repressive in this country.” The climate of fear which is operating in the country, according to Anwar, has put an obstacle on giving out a clear timetable of the actual date of the crossovers. “Some of them have to fly quietly to the neighbouring countries to have a discussion (with me). There are, however limitation and harassment (for the MPs),” he added, saying it would be dangerous if he were to reveal any names.

Responding to questions about DAP Chairperson Karpal Singh’s comments about crossovers, DS Anwar Ibrahim said “Anwar also responded to a question of possible divisive views within Pakatan over the BN defections into Pakatan that Karpal was was “taken out of context” in media reports, adding that he (Anwar) always shared the concerns on the defecting MPs with other Pakatan leaders. “They accept the fact and would consider applications of anyone who subscribes to the agenda of Pakatan.” “If people endorse (our) agenda and policies, Karpal does not have problems with the (crossover).”

Anwar: Hike ‘wanton in size, callous in effect’

From Malaysiakini.com - PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim described the 78-sen rise in petrol pump prices as “wanton in size and callous in effect”.

He added the increase - the largest in four rounds of price hikes in the last 18 months - was the “compounded legacy of the now unsustainable secrecy in the way the profits of Petronas are disbursed and was also the cumulative effect of wanton waste in government expenditure”.

In remarks made to Malaysiakini today, Anwar said, “Those chickens are now coming home to roost to the detriment of the ordinary citizen who has been scrimping and scraping for several years now.

“The steepness of the price increase this time is simply unconscionable,” he asserted.
