KUALA LUMPUR, 16HB JULAI, 2008 3.30 PM

Petang ini jam 1.05 petang Anwar Ibrahim, Mantan Timbalan Perdana Menteri Malaysia ditahan di luar rumah beliau di Kuala Lumpur. Beliau dijadualkan untuk memberi kenyataan di Ibu Pejabat Polis Kontinjen Kuala Lumpur pada jam 2.00 petang berasaskan perjanjian yang dicapai dengan pihak polis pada hari Selasa lalu.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ketika itu dalam perjalanan pulang dari Ibu Pejabat Badan Pencegah Rasuah ke rumah beliau selepas memberi kenyataan berkenaan laporan polis yang dibuatnya. Laporan tersebut berkaitan pemalsuan serta penyembunyian bukti-bukti kes oleh Tan Sri Musa Hasan dan Tan Sri Gani Patail pada tahun 1998 yang membabitkan Datuk Seri Anwar. Beliau diiringi para peguam, staf dan pasukan keselamatan.

Pasukan polis yang disertai 10 buah kereta, separuh darinya tidak dapat dikenali, telah memaksa rombongan Datuk Seri Anwar untuk berhenti sejurus mereka memasuki persimpangan Bukit Segambut. Pasukan polis ini juga terdiri dari Unit Tindakan Khas yang berjumlah 20 orang bertopeng, mengingatkan kita kepada peristiwa tahun 1998.

Seorang pegawai terus mendekati Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim dan meminta beliau turun untuk menaiki kenderaan yang disediakan polis ke Ibu Pejabat Kontijen Polis Kuala Lumpur( IPK KL). Para peguam beliau tidak dibenarkan untuk bersama dalam satu kenderaan menuju ke IPK KL.

Ketua Umum Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim telah ditahan oleh polis kira-kira jam 1.00 tengahari sebentar tadi.

Beliau pulang ke rumah selepas disoalsiasat oleh Badan Pencegah Rasuah pagi ini sebelum bertolak ke IPK. Beliau ditahan dan dibawa dengan kereta polis semasa dalam perjalanan ke IPK KL.

Penyokong diminta berkumpul secara tenang di IPK KL untuk memberi sokongan kepada Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

This afternoon we have been notified by the DSP Jude Pereira that our client has been summoned to IPK KL tomorrow at 2:00 PM.

This announcement contravenes the agreement we had already made to present our client for his statement on Thursday at 2:00 PM at IPK KL.

Federal CID chief Mohd Bakri Zinin has stated that failure to comply with this sudden change may precipitate the arrest of our client.

We are troubled by the threatening language coming from the CID and by the unannounced change.  No reason has been given for this change and we are concerned that internal confusion within the law enforcement agencies may precipitate in harm coming to our client.

Notwithstanding these latest developments our client has agreed to fully cooperate with the CID police and appear at 2:00 PM on Wednesday to give a statement.  At 10:30 AM on Wednesday he will also give a statement to the Anti Corruption Agency pertaining to the police report that has been filed regarding suppression of material facts in our clients case in 1998.

We reiterate that until our client has yet to be provided with the police report that has been filed against him despite multiple requests that have been made to obtain it.

— PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BY AMERICK SINGH SIDHU —

4 July 2008, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

I have been made to understand that Mr. Balasubramaniam a/l Perumal has issued a statutory declaration at a press conference held at the Prince Hotel at 11.00 am this morning, retracting his earlier statutory declaration affirmed on the 1st July 2008.

The reason given for this retraction is that his original statutory declaration, recorded by myself, was “compelled to be affirmed under duress”.

No details of this alleged compulsion and duress have been put forth.  Mr. Bala is reported as not answering when asked this morning in his press conference who was it who intimidated him.

For the record, I confirm that the statutory declaration affirmed by Mr.Bala on 1st July 2008 which he released yesterday was affirmed voluntarily before a commissioner for oaths Dr. T. Yokheswarem and in my presence.

I first met Mr. Bala in the presence of a few other persons in a restaurant about two months ago where he asked me to assist with preparing a formal document incorporating some evidence that had not been presented in the ongoing Altantuya trial.  I started the process about two weeks after that.  I would have met him a few times where I recorded in long hand, what Mr. Bala told me.
