What do you do when a financial behemoth implodes?
What can you say about free market capitalism when the world’s leading liberal democracy dumps nearly a trillion dollars in private debt onto taxpayers? Are Freddie Mac and Fannie May along with Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and AIG totally unforeseen victims of systemic once in a lifetime financial meltdowns or are they not really victims of their own greed? When you allow the “mushrooming of weapons of financial mass destruction,” to borrow a phrase from Warren Buffet then isn’t it written that you shall reap what you sow?
The question is who should pay the price of Wall Street’s excesses. I learned in Economics 101 that those who live by the market must also die by the market. But with this gargantuan bailout it looks like the only thing that is dead is raw capitalism. Not that I’m complaining or that I ever subscribed to this thing called a totally free market. Some will recall that in my address in Bangkok last year I repeated my mantra that the free market is well and good but Adam Smith’s invisible hand may sometimes continue to be invisible if not altogether paralysed when the time for action draws nigh. Sometimes as it is in times like these, Uncle Sam’s hand may prove to be far quicker on the draw. Otherwise spontaneous order may well turn out to be spontaneous chaos.

Speaking of history, it would appear that the powers that be have learned some lessons. We know what happened in the 1930s when, adhering strictly to free market principles, the Federal Reserve folded its arms and did absolutely nothing even as the financial system was cracking under the weight of massive defaults that eventually caused the collapse of the American economy and the contagion spread to Europe. There would have been lessons learned too from the October 87 crash, and the savings and loans scandal. Then of course, there was the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Seusai majelis berbuka puasa bersama teman-teman Indonesia di Jakarta tempoh hari, sahabat saya tokoh sastera Indonesia, Taufik Ismail menghadiahi saya empat jilid karyanya yang berjudul Mengakar Ke Bumi Menggapai Ke Langit, karya yang menandai sudah 55 tahun beliau berjuang di arena kesusasteraan Indonesia.
Saya kira sangat baik sekali usaha seumpama karya ini yang menghimpunkan koleksi puisi lengkap beliau yang ditulis sejak 1953 hingga 2008, juga berupa himpunan tulisan kolum dan artikel sejak 1960 hingga 2008 dan himpunan lirik lagu dari tahun 1972 hingga ke tahun 2008.

2009 NATIONAL BUDGET AND ECONOMIC POLICY BRIEF
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (KeAdilan) recognizes that for millions of Malaysian citizens the economic climate has become a troublesome one. Malaysians today face ongoing reduction in their purchasing power, growing job insecurity, increased fuel prices, low wages, and a high gap between the rich and poor. KeAdilan believes that Malaysia can no longer afford to stand on the sidelines and allow the BN government to pursue a ‘too-little-too-late approach’ in addressing these issues. That is why, on this day, KeAdilan is pushing one more step forward its position on the Malaysian Economic Agenda, to relieve the burden on Malaysians struggling with record high inflation and dwindling economic prospects. Whereas the current government has failed to adequately address these issues, KeAdilan will pursue the policies critical to restoring Malaysia’s quality of life, economic strength and competitiveness in the global economy.
1.0 Summary:
The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (KeAdilan) proposals on the budget and response to the current BN government’s 2009 National Budget are based on a new model of socio-economic development which draws on an analysis of some of the best performing economies in the world. This specifically includes understanding the successes of Taiwan, Korea and Ireland, and integrating the best practices of these economies with the enormous potential of Malaysia’s natural and human resources and the positive aspects of Malaysia’s past development plans.

Alhamdulillah selesai solat maghrib hari ini di Masjid Batu Kampung Pertama, saya bersama makmum lainnya dapat menunaikan solat hajat memohon kepada Allah S.W.T agar diberkati perjuangan menentang kezaliman ini serta dilindungi Allah dari bahaya fitnah. Solat hajat diimamkan oleh Tuan Guru Haji Salleh dari Pondok Lanai Sik, Kedah.
Kemudiannya saya menghadiri program bersama masyarakat Tiong Hua dan India di Seberang Jaya. Saya tegaskan komitemen untuk membina Malaysia sebagai sebuah negara yang tidak berasaskan perkauman; Malaysia untuk semua. Tuduhan fitnah yang mengatakan saya akan menggadai kepentingan kaum Melayu jika Pakatan Rakyat mengambil alih kelak jelas memperlihatkan sikap pemimpin UMNO yang sebenar yang hanya ingin kekal berkuasa sehingga sanggup melaga-lagakan umat Melayu dengan kaum-kaum lainnya.
Ingin saya tanyakan, adakah dengan merompak khazanah negara, kamu wahai pemimpin UMNO sekalian mempertahankan Melayu? Di mana kedudukan bahasa Melayu sekarang? Bagaimana pula kedudukan ekonomi orang Melayu sekarang? Jangan hanya beromong kosong! Kamu kaya raya dengan berbillion ringgit rakyat terus papa kedana dibebani harga minyak yang melambung.
Seperti rapat umum sebelumnya saya sentiasa tegas di dalam mempertahankan kedudukan bahasa Melayu sebagai bahasa kebangsaan tanpa mengenepikan bahasa Mandarin dan Tamil. Saya juga yakin dan komited untuk memperkasakan ekonomi demi orang Melayu, Cina, India, Kadazan, Iban dan demi seluruh rakyat Malaysia.
