Malaysia’s Anwar seeks to remove sodomy case judge

From AFP

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim moved Monday to have the judge in his sodomy trial disqualified, complaining he had refused to rein in biased media coverage.

The trial, which Anwar says is a plot to end his political career, began last week with graphic testimony from 24-year-old former aide Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan who accuses Anwar of sodomising him.

Defence lawyers objected Friday when Utusan Malaysia, a Malay-language daily linked to the government, ran photographs of the court’s closed-door visit to the apartment where the sexual encounter allegedly took place.

Judge Mohamad Zabidin Diah refused a request to admonish the daily over the pictures, as well as an earlier headline that said “Not willing to be sodomised again,” which the defence said suggested they had sex more than once. Continue reading ‘Malaysia’s Anwar seeks to remove sodomy case judge’

Malaysian Media Shapes Battleground in Anwar trial

From Reuters
By David Chance; Editing by Bill Tarrant

Malaysian media photos showing “in camera” proceedings in the sodomy trial of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim prompted complaints of bias in the politically charged trial on Friday.

The graphic picture in Friday’s edition of government-controlled Malay language Utusan Malaysia showed a 24-year-old man, who says Anwar had sex with him, gesturing toward a bed.

The same paper on Thursday used language that was struck out of court proceedings after objections by Anwar’s lawyers in a headline that read “Not willing to be sodomised again,” implying that Anwar had sex with the man more than once. Pandangan Rakyat Terhadap Kes Kehilangan Enjin Jet 2007

From Malaysia Kini

‘What else will go missing? The country?’

Missing jet engine: PM promises no cover-up

Raja Rajan: Back in 1995, then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was quoted as saying ‘lama-lama kapalterbang pun hilang juga’ when he was asked on a gold heist at the Subang airport. Well 14 years on, nothing much has improved in terms of national security. It has worsened.

Alright, it’s only an aircraft engine, not a plane yet. But the government has always said it was thwarting an imminent threat to national security whenever it arrested its political opponents under the ISA, how come it missed these guys at the Sungai Besi RMAF airbase? Rakyat Wajib Bersatu Menentang GST

Continue reading ‘Rakyat Wajib Bersatu Menentang GST’

Justice Denied Again

Comment From Din Merican

Justice is being once again denied when the High Court Judge, Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah, today dismissed Anwar Ibrahim’s application to strike out the sodomy charge (Sodomy 2) This was not unexpected by Anwar himself and his legal team, although their grounds for their application were valid, that is, the medical reports by four (4) medical specialists, not one (1) showed no penetration. What stronger evidence is needed than that!

The Hon’ble Judge, however, felt otherwise. He is of the view that “only a full trial could determine if there was actual penetration as charged by the prosecution”.It does not take a legal genius to know that the medical report is crucial in determining whether or not a “sexual act” (in this case, sodomy) was committed. A Common Word Between Us and You

Plenary address by Anwar Ibrahim at the “Common Word Between Us and You” Conference on Muslim Christian Relations in the 21st Century at Georgetown University on October 7, 2009

In Love’s Labours Lost, the Bard tells us that:

… when Love speaks, the voice of all the gods
Makes heaven drowsy with the harmony
Act IV, Sc. III

There are few universities that have demonstrated as profound and enduring a commitment to interfaith work and civilizational dialogue as Georgetown. Where there is a clear lack of institutions focused on the nurturing of the ideas and values that would create such understanding between the Muslim world and the West, I commend John Esposito’s vision and commitment in heading the Prince Alaleed Center for Muslim Christian Understanding. Just after the Center was established in 1993 I remember delivering a lecture here on the need for civilisational dialogue where we asserted that the way forward was the pursuit of a convivencia: a harmonious and enriching experience of living together among people of diverse religions and cultures. I returned to Malaysia after that speech inspired by this spirit of engagement and keen to apply it to our Asian context where the prominence of a Muslim-Christian dialogue was of lesser importance to the other major civilizations which intermingled in my country. Within two years hosted the first ever conference on Islam and Confucianism that brought together such intellectual luminaries as Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Tu Weiming and over 1000 participants from across Asia and led to the establishment of a permanent center of Islam and Confucianism at the University of Malaya.

The encounter between East and West has for generations been caught within the vortex of competing essentialisms. Some in the East professed undying adherence to a way of life perceived as superior and more fulfilling thus rejecting categorically any foreign elements. Others overwhelmed by the dazzling splendour of Western civilization forswore their own culture and traditions and condemned their own people for backwardness. The folly of such extremes is apparent to us now. And yet while the civilizing mission of the West is over and forgotten, its legacy remains with us in the form of mistrust and apprehension between peoples and civilizations. A sinister strand of this age-old debate has recently surfaced that pits a violent and anti-modern Islamic world against the enlightened society of the West. One wonders whether after so many years and so many attempts to build bridges of understanding, are we really making any progress?

Tribute to Cory Aquino

Cory Aquino’s life proved that one woman’s heroic response to adversity can transform a tribulation into a national triumph

Speaking at the viewing of the late Cory Aquino

By Anwar Ibrahim

In assessing every notable figure of history, a vexing question arises: to what extent did greatness inhere in the person, and to what degree was it a product of the situation?

If great persons have their starts, as Gandhi said he did, it is often because a national or world crisis favors greatness.

Corazon Aquino’s rise to historical fame was much like John Kennedy’s ascension to soldierly bravery. “They sank my boat,” said Kennedy responding to the question of how he became a wartime hero.

“They killed my husband,” one imagines Cory Aquino would have said had she been asked how a homemaker became the first female President of the Republic of the Philippines.

If her husband Benigno Aquino personified Filipino courage in the face of oppression, as Jamie Cardinal Sin famously eulogized Ninoy at his funeral, Cory Aquino exemplified every surviving victim’s desire for redemption of a cause momentarily ground into dust by brute force.

Against what she felicitously described as the “guns, goons and gold” of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Cory Aquino rallied the forces to change the seemingly hopeless destiny of the Filipino masses under the initially bright but soon-to-be blighted Marcos presidency.

Just as her husband could have preferred the sterile comforts of exile to the savage threats to his physical safety upon his return home, likewise Cory could have retired from her slain husband’s cause and let the cup of destiny pass into the hands of another presumptive leader.

She didn’t let the cup pass. Instead she raised her murdered husband’s fallen banner, and after a two-and-a-half year struggle, hoisted it victoriously at the Malacanang Palace.

Thus she earned the undying gratitude of the Filipino people for returning their country to the ideals of its founding liberator, Jose Rizal, whom history recognizes as Asia’s first fighter for constitutional government by consent of the governed.

Cory Aquino’s struggle for and success at fortifying constitutional democracy in the Philippines was one of the signal battles in the last quarter of the 20th century. Oppressed masses in Asia, nay the world, touched their forelocks in gratitude to her for the inspiring example of her courage in the face of adversity.

The Malaysian people have a special reason to view her as an iconic figure. Their striving for a return of their country to the dispensation entrusted to it by its founding constitution mirrors hers and Ninoy’s successful struggle to return the Filipino nation to the promise of Rizal’s legacy.

My family, especially my wife Azizah, has a more intimate reason to be grateful to her for the generosity of her support during the years of my incarceration. Cory treated my wife and children as family, exemplifying the solidarity of all hearts that thirst for justice.

Azizah will convey in person the grief felt by Malaysians, particularly members of the party she leads, Keadilan, for the inspiration of her life’s achievement and the solicitude she showed us in our hour of acute need.

Our gratitude for her support knows no bounds; likewise our grief at her passing.

This essay was recited by Keadilan President Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in Manila earlier today to the family of the late Cory Aquino.
