Perutusan Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim Sempena Maulidur Rasul

Press Statement By Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail On Datuk Akjan Issue, Sabah

Press Release by Dato’ Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail

KEADILAN Sabah

Parti Keadilan Rakyat wants the Home Ministry to speedily investigate businessman-cum-former ISA detainee Datu Mohd Akjan Ali Muhammad, who was recently proclaimed the new Sultan of Sulu.

Its President Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail said Sunday, the matter was of great urgency as it involved national sovereignty and security.

“There should not be any cover-up on the case, which would be tantamount to practicing ‘double standards’ on the part of the Malaysian Government.

“The Home Ministry must not compromise on national sovereignty and security but take appropriate action as soon as possible if Akjan has violated the law,” she said in a statement, here.

Dr Wan Azizah was commenting on Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman’s recent statement in Sabah that the Home Ministry would investigate Akjan whether he contravenes the law and poses a security threat to the nation.

Abu Seman was quoted as saying that the issue of citizenship (of Akjan) did not arise as far as the Home Ministry was concerned.

“He has a Malaysian citizenship, then he is a Malaysian,” he had said.

In response, Dr Wan Azizah said it sounded superficial as Akjan is said to possess dual citizenship. How can a person be Malaysian citizen and at the same time the installed as the reigning Sultan of the Sulu of Sultanate right at our back yard ie Likas, Sabah? The people of Sabah and all Malaysian for that matter have the right to know the truth”. Said Dato’ Seri Wan Azizah, who is also the interim chairperson of the KEADILAN Sabah Presidential Council.

“Furthermore, it was reported that he is listed in Mutalib M.D.’s book (IC Palsu) as someone holding a fake IC. And this is of public knowledge among Malaysians and the authorities in Sabah.

“If that is true, the case warrants deeper investigation. Do not bypass the issue at hand. Under the circumstances, the Home Ministry must seriously delve into the matter and make known its findings,” she
pointed out.

At this juncture, Dr Wan Azizah said it was a joke of the year for Home Minister, Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein to say there was no Project IC.

“Project IC is a household word in Malaysia, especially in Sabah, where some foreigners have openly declared that they obtained their ICs through Project IC.

“So, is the Minister concerned trying to play blind and dumb over the issue?” she asked.

Web portal Sabah Kini reported the self-proclaimed “interim government of the Sulu Sultanate” as claiming that Akjan was a direct descendant of the last reigning Sultan of Sultan, Paduka Mahasari Maulana Al-Marhum Sultan Shariful-Hashim.

It is also the third such claim to be made by competing groups within the last two months alone.

The “Prime Minister” of the interim government, Datu Albi Ahmad Julkarnain, announced that Akjan was ceremonially installed as the 33rd reigning Sultan of the Sulu Sultanate on Feb 2, 2011 after taking his oath of allegiance in a private ceremony at Kg Likas, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

“EGYPT AND tunisia – The Future of Middle East and the Muslim World”

The Future of Middle East and the Muslim World”

. Monday, 14th February 2011 – 8.30pm –10.30pm.De Palma Hotel, Ampang

The end to the political crisis in Egypt and Tunisia represents another symbol of triumph for the movement of the people’s power. The recent event which would have a spectacular effect on the political milieu in the region serves as a fresh and cold test for the people of Egypt and Tunisia to decide for themselves a representative government that would embody the spirit of democracy as well as encouraging towards it. For decades, the people of Egypt and Tunisia had been ruled under a dominating and tyrant-like leader which had total control over the judiciary, legislative and of course, the executive. Economic malaise persists with high unemployment, food price inflation and low minimum wages. The fall of tyranny in Tunisia and Egypt opens up the opportunity for further democratization in the region and this poses considerable challenges to the largely Muslim countries in the region. Hence, this forum aims to discuss the future of the Middle East and the Muslim World in regards on the further democratization of the region and on the role of the United States in mediating the balance of power in the Middle East region.

RIGHTS (Regional Initiatives for Governance and Social Justice) and KeADILan International cordially invite you to a discussion on the recent political upheaval in the Middle East region which is titled “Egypt and Tunisia – The Future of the Middle East and the Muslim World” Monday, 14th February 2011 from 8.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. at the De Palma Hotel, Ampang.

We believe that you will find the exchanges to be interesting and illuminating. We appreciate your cooperation by responding to this invitation by Monday, 14th February 2011 before 5.00 p.m. Should you require further information on this programme, please do not hesitate to contact me at yusmadi.yusoff@gmail.com or our Administrative Associate Zulsalehin via email at rights.ent@gmail.com.

Tahniah rakyat Mesir!

Tahniah rakyat Mesir!

Engage Muslim Brotherhood, Anwar Tells US

From Malaysiakini

The United States should not fear engaging Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood as it is crucial to support people’s choices in the Islamic world, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said.
Anwar, who has written extensively about democracy in Islamic societies, said on a visit to Washington that engaging Islamic-oriented groups has proven successful in Indonesia, Turkey and Malaysia.

Anwar said that Egypt presented a special “opportunity” due to the country’s outsized influence across the Arab and Islamic worlds.

“Engagement works in meaningful ways. They will have to engage on every single issue,” Anwar said late today at the New America Foundation think-tank.

While many Egyptians may disagree with the Muslim Brotherhood, the group represents a significant part of the population and “the only other option is to wage war against them,” Anwar said.

“We can only succeed in Muslim societies if you are seen to be respectful of the choice made by Muslims, or Egyptians in this case,” Anwar said.

He added that engagement must come only after strict constitutional guarantees for freedom of expression, freedom of religion, the rule of law and “economic justice.”

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 and is Egypt’s most powerful organized opposition, although it has taken a back seat in the mass demonstrations against strongman President Hosni Mubarak.

The future role of the Muslim Brotherhood is a heated topic of discussion in Washington, with some US policymakers uneasy about the movement’s goals but others believing that it is comparatively moderate in ideology.

US President Barack Obama’s spokesperson said on Monday that the White House had had no contact with the Muslim Brotherhood.

“We have many disagreements with the rhetoric of some of the leaders in that organization,” spokesperson Robert Gibbs told reporters.

Mubarak Family Fortune Could Reach $70bn, Say Experts

From Guardian (UK)
By Phillip Inman

Egyptian president has cash in British and Swiss banks plus UK and US property

President Hosni Mubarak’s family fortune could be as much as $70bn (£43.5bn) according to analysis by Middle East experts, with much of his wealth in British and Swiss banks or tied up in real estate in London, New York, Los Angeles and along expensive tracts of the Red Sea coast.

After 30 years as president and many more as a senior military official, Mubarak has had access to investment deals that have generated hundreds of millions of pounds in profits. Most of those gains have been taken offshore and deposited in secret bank accounts or invested in upmarket homes and hotels.

According to a report last year in the Arabic newspaper Al Khabar, Mubarak has properties in Manhattan and exclusive Beverly Hills addresses on Rodeo Drive.
His sons, Gamal and Alaa, are also billionaires. A protest outside Gamal’s ostentatious home at 28 Wilton Place in Belgravia, central London, highlighted the family’s appetite for western trophy assets.

Amaney Jamal, a political science professor at Princeton University, said the estimate of $40bn-70bn was comparable with the vast wealth of leaders in other Gulf countries.

“The business ventures from his military and government service accumulated to his personal wealth,” she told ABC news. “There was a lot of corruption in this regime and stifling of public resources for personal gain.

“This is the pattern of other Middle Eastern dictators so their wealth will not be taken during a transition. These leaders plan on this.”

Al Khabar said it understood the Mubaraks kept much of their wealth offshore in the Swiss bank UBS and the Bank of Scotland, part of Lloyds Banking Group, although this information could be at least 10 years old.

There are only sketchy details of exactly where the Mubaraks have generated their wealth and its final destination.

Christopher Davidson, professor of Middle East politics at Durham University, said Mubarak, his wife, Suzanne, and two sons were able to accumulate wealth through a number of business partnerships with foreign investors and companies, dating back to when he was in the military and in a position to benefit from corporate corruption.

He said most Gulf states required foreigners give a local business partner a 51% stake in start-up ventures. In Egypt, the figure is commonly nearer 20%, but still gives politicians and close allies in the military a source of huge profits with no initial outlay and little risk.

“Almost every project needs a sponsor and Mubarak was well-placed to take advantage of any deals on offer,” he said.

“Much of his money is in Swiss bank accounts and London property. These are the favourites of Middle Eastern leaders and there is no reason to think Mubarak is any different. Gamal’s Wilton Place home is likely to be the tip of the iceberg.”

Al Khabar named a series of major western companies that, partnered with the Mubarak family, generated an estimated $15m a year in profits.

Aladdin Elaasar, author of The Last Pharaoh: Mubarak and the Uncertain Future of Egypt in the Obama Age, said the Mubaraks own several residences in Egypt, some inherited from previous presidents and the monarchy, and others the president has commissioned.

Hotels and land around the Sharm el-Sheikh tourist resort are also a source of Mubarak family wealth.

Bukan Sumpah Tutankhamun, Bukan Salah Jebat Derhaka

Dari Merdeka Review
Oleh Hafiz Zainuddin

Pagi masih awal. Sekumpulan demonstran sedang membuat senaman ringan.

Menurut laporan The Guardian; harta keluarga diktator itu bernilai sekitar USD70 billion! Sekiranya di Malaysia; orang Melayulah yang paling suka pemimpinnya kaya walaupun dia hidup melarat. Katanya “…asal Melayu tak apa…”

Hosni cuba rasuah kakitangan awam

Continue reading ‘Bukan Sumpah Tutankhamun, Bukan Salah Jebat Derhaka’

Ketuanan Melayu Umno Tidak Laku Kepada Anak Muda

Open Letter To Anwar Ibrahim

Dear YB DSAI,

Since the day the great Tun sacked his deputy, the seed of reform was sowed. The Tun Dr can either be scorned or praised for that defining moment when he made a decision to annihilate his deputy in disgrace.

And so began that arduous battle between DSAI and the Barisan Nasional.

Today, one man stands out battling a whole crew of BN aligned politicians. That in itself is amazing.

While DSAI has successfully reined in the decades old battle weary ‘opposition’ parties, BN rightly so now aims for that one single target –DSAI.

The billion-dollar question is: Will he survive the onslaught? Will his pact stay the ground, come what may?

Or will BN be hammered into a tight corner, fighting tooth and nail for survival?

The answer lies not within the power corridors of the ruling government. The answer also cannot come from the ‘opposition’ pact. The answer – fortunately or otherwise, lies in the hearts and minds of the rakyat.

If the rakyat cannot withstand the price that must be paid for reform, then they will have aided the demise of a political hope for many – DSAI.

If the rakyat believed that DSAI is not a hope but a curse, then BN would have killed this man the day after he was unceremoniously sacked and hackled in prison.

But what we are witnessing today is that hard to assimilate fact by several quarters, i.e. that DSAI is making in-roads into the hearts and minds of the rakyat despite the advantage position of the ruling elite.

If this is not true, the BN should test the waters. BN at best can arrest DSAI and all his powered-allies. Incarcerate them in prison. Sell the story to the rakyat about DSAI and his teams’ wrong doings. What will be the eventuality?

Will the rakyat celebrate in a euphoric mood or will there be a sea of street protests as in the likes of Tunisia and Egypt?

If anyone cares for the well being of the humble citizen, this battle must cease. Give the platform back to the citizens to vote their hero –DSAI or BN. And let the winner take the lead to re-build a nation of people who are praying and crying for a happy future.

……..Thanks to MT.

As Salaam,

J.D. Lovrenciear
