Ratusan umat tanpa putus menziarahi maqam. Saya terharu sambil kagum menyaksikan kecintaan rakyat sedemikian.
Kami kemudian ke rumah Gus Shalah, adik Gus Dur. Pastinya isu “Allah” dibangkitkan!

Malaysia’s opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim goes on trial next week on sodomy charges for the second time, confident he will win and believing the government’s mishandling of a religious row has bolstered the opposition’s political standing.

Anwar, 62, was this Southeast Asian country’s deputy premier and prime minister-in-waiting until 1998, when he was ousted from government, accused of corruption and sodomy and eventually jailed at the height of the Asian economic crisis.

In an interview with Reuters on Tuesday, Anwar said the ongoing row over whether Christians can use the word “Allah”, in which 11 churches and other religious buildings have been attacked, had hurt “the credibility of the government”.

Anwar was released from prison in 2004 after the top court overturned his sodomy conviction, and went on to build up his three-party People’s Alliance coalition. (more…)

Could the move by the police to record Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s statement yesterday see the PKR president ending up on the witness stand early to testify in her husband’s sodomy trial?

MCPX
The one-hour interrogation of Wan Azizah a week shy of Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II trial has raised eyebrows.

As the defence team was not given the prosecution’s witness list, speculation is rife the PKR president’s name may end up on it following the latest development.

PKR vice-president R Sivarasa , who accompanied Wan Azizah to the Tropicana police station said he found it strange that police would called her now, two years after the alleged sodomy.

Sivarasa, who is also part of Anwar’s defence team said Wan Azizah was being questioned as an “alibi witness”.

“I find it strange for the police to record a statement from Wan Azizah just when the trial is scheduled to start.”

“Anyway she had given her statement to the police and it is consistent. I only find it odd they decide to question her only now and not earlier,” the Subang MP said. (more…)

(more…)

(more…)

Peguam veteran Karpal Singh berkata Peguam Negara Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail tidak menyerahkan sijil perintah ‘fiat’ bagi memberi kuasa kepadanya untuk mendakwa peguam Datuk V.K.Lingam

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was allowed on Tuesday to amend certain parts of his defence in a defamation suit filed by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Musa Hasan linked to the probe into the 1998 “black eye” incident.

The High Court senior assistant registrar, A. Kaveeta, made the order in chambers.

Anwar’s counsel, S.N.Nair, told reporters that Anwar would also file an application soon to strike out the suit.

Anwar lodged a report at the Selangor police contingent headquarters on July 1, 2008, claiming that Musa and Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail had fabricated evidence and hidden some facts in the investigation into the physical assault on him by the then IGP, Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Noor, in 1998. Malaysia has once again resurfaced in international headlines for the wrong reasons. Over the last two weeks, arsonists and vandals attacked 10 places of worship, including Christian churches and Sikh temples. Though there were no injuries and the material damage is reparable, the same cannot be said about the emotional and psychological scars left behind. After numerous conflicting statements from government officials, the underlying causes of the violence are still unaddressed. Malaysia’s reputation as a nation at peace with its ethnic and religious diversity is at stake.

Malaysia’s poor handling of religious and sectarian issues is not unique. The ill treatment of minority groups in Muslim countries is often worse than the actions Muslims decry in the West. I have called attention to the broader need in the Muslim world for leadership that demonstrates consistency and credibility in our call for justice, fairness and pluralism. These values are embedded in the Islamic tradition as the higher objectives of Shariah expounded by the 12th-century jurist al-Shatibi.

We have seen Muslims around the world protest against discriminatory laws passed in supposedly liberal and progressive countries in the West. Yet just as France and Germany have their issues with the burqa and Switzerland with its minarets, so too does Malaysia frequently fail to offer a safe and secure environment that accommodates its minority communities.

The recent arson attacks exemplify what’s wrong with the way Malaysia regards its non-Muslim citizens. The attacks were provoked by a controversy over the use of the word “Allah” by Malaysia’s Christian community, which numbers over two million, or about 10% of the population. In late 2007, the Home Ministry banned the use of the word by the Herald, a Catholic newspaper, and later confiscated 15,000 copies of Malay-language Bibles imported from Indonesia in which the word for God is translated as “Allah.” A Dec. 31, 2009 ruling by the Kuala Lumpur High Court overruled the earlier ban, asserting constitutional guarantees regarding the freedom of religion in Malaysia. Since then, an already tense situation boiled over, largely due to incitement by a few reckless politicians, the mainstream media and a handful of nongovernmental organizations linked by membership and leadership to the United Malays National Organization, the ruling party.

(more…)
