KEADILAN views with bewilderment Zaid Ibrahim’s recent incessant complaints to the press about the party and the ongoing party election, including an exclusive interview with Utusan Malaysia which he had once called a Gestapo paper. Has he forgotten that he was once the subject of Utusan’s dirty smear campaign during the Hulu Selangor by-election? Has he also forgotten Utusan’s relentless and vicious attacks against Pakatan Rakyat which caused Pakatan Rakyat to dismiss the newspaper?

Zaid has also made unkind insinuations that certain leaders including Tian Chua and Gobalakrishnan had been prevented from contesting for divisional posts when they were in fact free to contest and campaign as they like. As a matter of fact, Tian Chua won the divisional chief post of Batu while Gobalakrishnan is contesting for divisional chief post at Padang Serai.

Likewise, no one has prevented Zaid from contesting and campaigning for any post including the Presidency.

We find it astonishing that he has frequently compared KEADILAN to UMNO when there is just no comparison as KEADILAN stands for everything UMNO does not. He should stop playing the victim to gain sympathy at the expense of the party.

Instead of complaining publicly on the election and undermining the party,

he should observe the proper organisational procedure by forwarding the details to the Jawatankuasa Pemilihan Pusat (JPP), rather than making sweeping statements of underhand tactics and conspiracy.

We are also perplexed by Zaid’s assertions that the party is blocking his “reform agenda” when party decisions are always collectively made to enhance the party’s progressive and reform-based policies. Zaid should also reveal the so called “reform agenda” and proceed to advocate them through the usual decision making process rather than providing sound bites to the press.

As the KEADILAN Chief for the Federal Territory and also a member of both the Central Leadership Council and Political Bureau, Zaid is at the apex of the party decision making process. He certainly has more than the usual opportunity to express his views. Zaid should also acknowledge that he is part of the party leadership and he cannot avoid the inherent collective responsibility and must respect the party’s decision making process.

KEADILAN wishes to advise him to relook at what KEADILAN has achieved as an agent for reform in this country including the landmark direct party election which has empowered individual party members with equal voting right, irrespective of their positions in the party – a testimony of our commitment towards reform.

In the midst of intense party election, let us not forget who are our real adversary – UMNO/BN, and we are confident that KEADILAN can only emerge stronger after the landmark party election.

Lee Boon Chye
Vice President Keadilan

Keynote address by Anwar Ibrahim, Parliamentary Opposition Leader of Malaysia at Brussels, 28th September, 2010

First and foremost, there is essentially no problem in terms of compatibility, not a foundational problem at least that would make it impossible for a country with a majority of Muslims to be governed according to the requirements of a constitutional democracy. In other words, the notion of Islam being diametrically opposed to democracy and its principles is a fallacy.

Islam enjoins the faithful to uphold equality, justice, and human dignity. If violence and terror are being spread by Muslims in the name of Islam then it is an aberration reflective of such people and the focus should rightly be on the underlying causes of such actions, not Islam. Blaming Islam won’t solve the problem as long as the underlying causes are not addressed and resolved.

But detractors say that Islam not only condones but urges the faithful to commit acts of violence in the name of jihad. This is nonsense. But they cite chapter and verse to support this view. Yes, but it is only by extreme distorting of the textual interpretation. On the contrary, the truth is that Islam prohibits violence and terror by virtue of the principles of moderation and the protection of life, limb and property.

This is subsumed under the doctrine of the maqasid al-Shari’ah, a most crucial and significant tool for the progress of Muslim societies, a tool which unfortunately has been much ignored. By virtue of this doctrine for example, jihad is a call to the faithful to fulfill the tenets of the religion by doing good and averting evil, establishing justice, promoting charity and helping the weak and the marginalized. It is not a battle cry for war, let alone one to justify mayhem and murder. Above all, jihad enjoins Muslims to maintain peace and harmony and safeguard the sanctity of life and property. These are ideals completely in consonance with the dictates of democracy.

But what about this incarceration/liberation dichotomy? The answer lies in debunking the school of ideological rigidity which is largely responsible for making the religion very rigid and exclusive. The fact is that Islam is amenable to adapting to modern times with its defining feature being its inclusive nature. Empirically, we know that Islam in Southeast Asia is a case in point. So is Turkey though the same may not be said about the Islam of the Middle East but that ought to be seen in the context of the geopolitical situation there.

The modernity of Islam in Southeast Asia is reflected for instance in the adoption of the principles of freedom and democracy for the establishment of an independent state. In this regard, the region’s transition to democracy debunks the notion of incompatibility between Islam and democracy.

As for equating Islam with intolerance and violence, that again finds no basis in reality. Muslim rule for centuries in Spain remains in the history books as clear testimony to the tolerance and spirit of convivencia among Muslims, Christians and Jews. In Southeast Asia, traders and Sufis spread the religion through their accommodative style of proselytizing which attracted adherents who have also kept some significant aspects of their pre-Islamic cultures. This explains why multi-cultural and multi-religious societies evolved in Muslim majority countries.

Today, those who call for violence and terror in the name of jihad can find little traction for their brand of Islam. A case in point is Indonesia two elections back when the people overwhelmingly rejected the radicals who rode on the jihad ticket. This is significant in debunking the notion that democracy in a Muslim majority nation can be easily hijacked by extremists and radicals.

Turkey is a fine example of what a Muslim nation can achieve if its leaders remain steadfast in observing the basic tenets of Islamic statecraft: modernist, moderate, progressive and tolerant with justice and the rule of law as a motto for governance. The recent referendum of the Turkish people in favor of fundamental constitutional changes to further strengthen democracy speaks volumes. In this regard, Turkey’s leaders stand in sharp contrast to the autocrats and dictators in some other Muslim countries who continue to deny the people democracy by raising the hijacking by extremists’ spectre.

The question arises as to whether there has been any real progress in political reform in the Muslim world apart from Turkey and Indonesia? Isn’t it true that certain states continue to be under one-man or one-party rule despite the trappings of reform? And even though certain states appear to moving on the path to real democracy, the rhetoric often exceeds the reality. There must therefore be greater resolve for Muslim countries to embrace constitutional democracy and translate that into reality: hold free and fair elections, ensure the separation of powers and guarantee fundamental civil liberties including allowing the full participation of women in political life. Vindictive prosecutions, arbitrary arrests, and the use of the state apparatus to silence political dissent must be a thing of the past. Unless and until such reforms are in place, the convergence of Islam and democracy will only be a mirage.
As for the process of democratization itself, there is the troubling question of the real intention of certain Western powers. You cannot turn a blind eye to blatant human rights violations in some countries and condemn these practices in others. You cannot say to one country, give us your support in this current war we’re waging, and we won’t interfere in your administration. The “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” diplomacy may be good realpolitik but it is a betrayal of the cause of democracy and freedom.

Unfortunately, however, it is partly because of this hypocritical approach to democratization that we still see many Muslim societies languishing under sham democracies. These are governments with the trappings of democracy but are in fact masquerades perpetuating injustice, human rights abuses and corruption. These ‘democracies’ employ the entire state apparatus and exploit the people’s hard earned money to promote their personal and vested interests. They plunder the state coffers, parcel out vast tracts of prime commercial land to relatives and cronies, and expropriate millions of hectares of virgin forests transforming them into wasteland.

So, the truth is that the assault on freedom and democracy is not from Islam, though the bulk of the perpetrators are Muslims. Indonesia and Turkey have demonstrated that democracy is not only acceptable but essential to Islam and that the enemy of Islam is not democracy but injustice, corruption, tyranny and greed. Indeed, freedom and democracy is part and parcel of the self-evident truths that would set mankind apart from the rest of God’s creatures.

The real issue is not whether Islam and democracy are destined to coincide but whether those in power in Muslim majority countries will uphold freedom and democracy, respect the rule of law and fulfil their duties to the people. If that doesn’t happen then it is incumbent on us to make it happen. And that is a cause worth fighting for.

Thank you.

Media Statement:
28 September 2010

The Jawatankuasa Pemilihan Pusat (JPP) has been given the task of supervising the conduct of the internal Keadilan elections at the division and national level.

This task includes dealing not just with complaints and objections raised prior to elections at the division level but also post election complaints.

The JPP will not hesitate to invalidate results at the division level if we are convinced that the election process was compromised or if there were acts of intimidation or violence that distorted the conduct of the elections.

We will also not hesitate to recommend disciplinary action including sacking against party members if we are presented with strong evidence that they had been involved in acts of violence or disrupted the smooth conduct of elections on the ground or engaged in any irregular conduct (e.g. vote-buying).

In coming to our decision we will consider reports from members as well as reports from secretariat staff and party volunteers who have conducted the elections under our supervision.

We urge any member who has concerns about the conduct of the elections at the division level to raise his/her concerns with the JPP in a formal manner so that these concerns can be given the attention they deserve. Individuals dissatisfied with the conduct of the elections should use this channel rather than making allegations in the media against either the JPP or the Keadilan secretariat.

166 divisions have held their annual meeting and elections over the past two weekends and the JPP is pleased to note that in the vast majority of cases division elections have proceeded in a smooth and orderly fashion.

Jawatankuasa Pemilihan Pusat (JPP)

Media statement by Dr Chen Man Hin, DAP life advisor on 28th sept 2010

suddenly there appears to be a deluge of international personalities criticising the malaysian government for persecuting anwar on trumped up charge of sodomy 2

it started with ex US vice president Gore, and IMF chief Stiglitz, followed by Barry Wain former awsj correspondent as well as a former US ambassador to malaysia John Croft

all of them unanaimously condemned the conspiracy to paint Anwar as a sodomist and therefore not fit to be the Opposition Leader.

these are all distinguished members of the international community who are shocked in unison by this serious transgression of justice, democracy and the rule of law by the malaysian government. UMNO, the power behind the prime minister, intends to perpetuate their power by trying anwar on trumped up charges of sodomy, to convict and imprison him, thus denying him the opportunity to be the next prime minister.

today, there is another powerful international figure in the person of Richard Branson who has joined the international posse of activists out to demand justice for Anwar’ Branson warned Najib that the trial of anwar on sodomy charges has damaged the image of malaysia and undermined the confidence of investors to invest in malaysia.
He strongly advised Najib to dismiss the charges, if he wants foreign investors to put their money here, and help malaysia to become a high income country.

The DAP had always been in the forefront to criticise the conspriacy to charge Anwar for sodomy and to find him guilty. we have warned that the international community will not idly stand by and watch an innocent person tried .. on trumped up charges and be put to jail

PM Najib should think carefully and heed international opinion. if he does not then FDIs (foreign direct investments} which fell by 81% in 2009 will fall further and there will be zero investments, which would mean the beginning of the end for the New Economic Model as well as 1 Malaysia.

From Jakarta Post

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim blamed the Malaysian media and ruling party UMNO for adding to the political tension between Indonesia and Malaysia.

Anwar, speaking at a forum in Jakarta on Sunday, said the tendency of Malaysians to hold negative views of Indonesians was attributable, among others, to negative coverage by the Malaysian media of events occurring in Indonesia or involving Indonesians.

“When we look at Malaysian media, we see negative reports [about Indonesia]: riots, poor Indonesian migrant workers being dumped. [There is] no positive coverage at all,” he said.

“When [Malaysian media] report on [Indonesia’s] Constitutional Court and the Corruption Eradication Commission, it’s covered as if all Indonesians are corrupt, although I know Malaysia is very corrupt too.”

The former deputy prime minister of Malaysia said the negative coverage was part of the reason why “understanding and affection” between the neighbors were not as strong compared to during his youth.

Although Indonesia’s first president Sukarno had at the time declared the “Destroy Malaysia” campaign, Anwar said he observed that negative sentiment toward Malaysians was not widely shared as it was now among the Indonesian public. “This is really not healthy for the long term.”

Anwar was speaking at a lecture organized by the Soegeng Sarjadi School of Government titled “Political Reform and Democratization in Malaysia: Toward Equal Friendship Between Malaysia and Indonesia”.
In the following press conference, he said the Malaysian ruling party UMNO also played a part in raising tensions by warning of threats to Malaysians because of Indonesian anger.

“Are our domestic politics or UMNO playing up the situation? Yes, they are. [UMNO] act as if Malaysia is under threat of being attacked by the boiling rage in Indonesia, which is not true. The sentiment is not that terrible in Indonesia, although yes there is anger that has spread among the people,” Anwar said.

The bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia is on a thin, with many, if not almost every incident involving the two countries quickly sparking renewed tension.

The issue of poor treatment of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia, border disputes and cultural claims are among the key points of disagreement.

Last month’s arrest of three Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry officers by Malaysian authorities in disputed waters, however, raised tensions to new high, with leaders of the two countries forced to deliver speeches to specially address the issue.
