Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim will make his third appearance in five years at the US-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Qatar today. His talk, entitled, “A Fresh Start: Has Barack Obama Initiated a New Beginning with Muslim Communities” will take place on Sunday morning at 9:00 AM.

The Forum opened on February 13th with a plenary session featuring Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor al-Thani. Also speaking was US Senator and head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee John Kerry and Abdelaziz Belkhadem, special envoy of Algerian President Abdelziz Bouteflika. On Sunday US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will also address the conference and tomorrow Ambassador Richard Holbrooke will also speak.

During his visit Mr. Ibrahim will have one-on-one meetings with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani as well as Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani, Senator John Kerry as well as numerous political activists and leaders from Muslim countries. He will attend a special session with the eminent Egyptian scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi and also meet with over a hundred Malaysian expatriates living and working in Qatar.

US President Barack Hussein Obama addressed the conference via a recorded message in which he reiterated the principles of mutual engagement expressed in his historic Cairo speech. He also announced the appointment of Mr. Rashad Hussein as the US special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

The annual conference is co-sponsored by the Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Saban Center of the Brookings Institution.
