KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — There may have been little progress inside the courtroom on Tuesday, but there was no shortage of drama outside on what was to have been the first day of the new sodomy trial of the opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
As his supporters rallied at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, Mr. Anwar, who is accused of sodomizing a former campaign worker, said he planned to subpoena the prime minister, Najib Razak, and his wife.
Mr. Anwar, who faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, said he had evidence that his accuser, Saiful Bukhari Azlan, visited the prime minister and his wife shortly before he made the complaint in 2008.
“We have evidence that he was involved,” Mr. Anwar said, referring to the prime minister. “He met Saiful two days before the report was lodged to the police.”
Mr. Anwar, a former deputy prime minister, was convicted of sodomy and abuse of power in an earlier case, in 1998. Although the sodomy conviction was later overturned, he spent six years in prison. He argues that the new sodomy charge is another attempt to end his political career.
The trial had been scheduled to start Tuesday after months of delays.
However, the court was adjourned in the morning after the defense filed an application for a review of an earlier decision that the prosecution would not have to make evidence available to the defense in advance. Mr. Anwar’s lawyers said the case was again adjourned in the afternoon after the defense said it had arranged to meet with the president of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday.Sankara Nair, the senior counsel, said he expected the court president to fix a date to hear the defense’s application, but the High Court had meanwhile rescheduled the trial to begin Wednesday afternoon.
As many as 300 of Mr. Anwar’s supporters gathered before the morning court session, according to some reports, and many returned to greet Mr. Anwar with cries of “Reform!” after he emerged from the afternoon session.
Waving signs that read “Justice for Anwar” and “Anwar not guilty,” supporters stood on the steps of the High Court, waving their fists as Mr. Anwar left the court complex.
Mazli Saring, 40, a business consultant, said he had come to show his support for Mr. Anwar because he believed that the sodomy charges were an attempt to prevent Mr. Anwar from becoming prime minister. “It’s a never- ending conspiracy,” he said.
Amnesty International and other human rights groups have condemned the current case as a “show trial,” saying that the charges are “politically motivated.”
If convicted, Mr. Anwar would be barred from holding political office for five years from the date of his release from prison. But Mr. Anwar has said that his People’s Alliance, which comprises three parties, has a contingency plan to name a successor.

Jangan bimbang sedara ! Najib pasti menghilang diri ! Malunya ‘cukup besar’ !
