Mahathir squandered RM100 bil, says new book

From Malaysiakini

Malaysia has squandered an estimated RM100 billion on financial scandals under the 22-year rule of Dr Mahathir Mohamad, according to a new book about the former prime minister.

According to Barry Wain, author of the soon-to-be launched ‘Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times’, direct financial losses amounted to about RM50 billion.

This doubled once the invisible costs, such as unrecorded write-offs, were taken into account. The RM100 billion total loss was equivalent to US$40 billion at then prevailing exchange rates.

Barry, who is a former editor of the Asian Wall Street Journal, says most of the scams, which included a government attempt to manipulate the international tin price and gambling by Bank Negara on global currency markets, occurred in the 1980s.

‘Malaysian Maverick’ is the first independent, full-length study of Mahathir, who retired in 2003 after more than two decades as premier. The book will be published globally next week by Palgrave Macmillan.

Wain writes that the Mahathir administration, which took office in 1981 with the slogan, “clean, efficient, trustworthy”, was almost immediately embroiled in financial scandals that “exploded with startling regularity”.

By the early 1990s, he says, cynics remarked that it had been “a good decade for bad behaviour, or a bad decade for good behaviour”.

Secret military deal with US

The book also reveals that:

Mahathir, despite his nationalistic rants, signed a secret security agreement with the United States in 1984 that gave the Americans access to a jungle warfare training school in Johor and allowed them to set up a small-ship repair facility at Lumut and a plant in Kuala Lumpur to repair C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.
Mahathir used a secret fund of his ruling Umno to turn the party into a vast conglomerate with investments that spanned almost the entire economy.
Mahathir’s Umno financed its new Putra World Trade Centre headquarters in Kuala Lumpur partly with taxpayers money, by forcing state-owned banks to write off at least RM140 million in interest on Umno loans.
Wain, who is now a writer-in-residence at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, however credits Mahathir with engineering the country’s economic transformation, deepening industrialisation and expanding Malaysia’s middle class.

But Mahathir had undermined state institutions, permitted the spread of corruption and failed to provide for Malaysia’s future leadership, he says.

33. Alienation of tens of thousands of hectares of commercial lands and forestry concessions to children and relatives of BN leaders and Ministers worth tens of billions of ringgits

34. Travel around Malaysia and see for yourself how many white elephants like majestic arches, roads paved with fanciful bricks, designer lamp posts, clock towers, Municipal Council buildings that looks more like Istanas, extravagant places of worship, refurbishment of residences of VIPs, abandoned or under-utilised government sports complexes and buildings, etc! Combined they could easily amount to the hundreds of billions of ringgits!

35. Wastages and forward trading of Petronas oil in the 1990s based on the low price of oil then. Since the accounts of Petronas are for the eyes of Prime Minister only, we have absolutely no idea of the amount. Whatever amount, you bet it is COLLOSSAL!

In Time Asia magazine issue on March 15 2004, South East Asian economist at Morgan Stanley in Singapore Daniel Lian, figures “that the country may have lost as much as U$$100 billion (RM320 billion) since the early 1980s to corruption.” Mind you, this is only corruption and it does not include wastages!

All the rakyat’s hard earned money down the drain and they have the audacity to raise fuel prices and asking the people to change their lifestyles.

Mahathir squandered RM100 billion? What nonsense. All this while I was thinking of the figure of RM300billion or more. This is not to mention the intangible losses that he had incurred on the destruction of the judiciary, AG Chambers, Police and MACC. If these agencies/bodies had been effective and carry out their duties which they are entrusted to do, I am sure before mahathir squandered RM1 billion, he would have been sent to Sungei Buluh.

Mahathir’s squandering of public funds is clear testimony to the integrity and credibility of those malays or so-called malays heading these public institution.

The amount mentioned above did not include what his family
had taken ! And also pariah Mahathir’s yearly, without fail, would go to London on transit to somewhere in Europe to audit his ‘investment’! Have his passport checked and it would not be a surprise to see that country he also visited every time he ‘visited’ London. He is ‘retired’ and at his age with a heart condition that was operated on twice. Why is he still traveling so often to London when he should be playing with his grand children and looking after the garden ? He obviously does not believe in Allah because soon when he has to face the Almighty he would be able to take even a single cent with him !

At 10% commission from that amount the pariah is famous for, that is a lot of money ! I wonder how many millionaires it would make and how many years it would take the millions of Malay to make that ? So that is why he built so many projects during his tenure, the more projects the more commissions !

    Hello to all Malaysian.

Just for the sake of comparing our leader with our neighbouring country’s leader.

Lee Kuan Yew is a visionary leader, whereas Mahathir is a fishy leader.
Lee Kuan Yew developed Singapore for Singapore people, whereas Mahathir developed Malaysia for his own people (UMNO & his family).
Lee Kuan Yew employed ex-Israeli intelligence for Singapore’s defence strategic planning, whereas Mahathir employed a US-President’s lobbyist for an appointment with President Bush.
Singaporean respected Lee Kuan Yew for all the things he done for the people, whereas Malaysian respected Mahathir for being himself.

Well, that’s the difference between UMNO-BN leader in comparison to Singapore’s PAP leader. UMNO-BN leader work for their own pocket, whereas Singapore’s PAP leader work for their people’s interest. In the end, both gain respect from their own people except that UMNO-BN used the Police, MACC, judiciary and other government agencies to earn that respect.

    Dear Sir,

When Mahathir became Prime Minister I was happy becos of his VISION 2020 & CLEAN, TRUSTWORTHY & HONEST policy. I thought we have a SAVIOUR in our midst
BUT as time passed & events unfolded, I lost confidence in him.

Maha came in a time when Malaysia was ready to take of. That was the era of the Asian Tigers.
If Maha is SO SMART ask him to go to Somalia Afghanistan Yemen to develop.
Any FOOL as PM will be able to bring developments cos he got POWER & CONTROL the MONEY.
The ISSUE if you can bring out GOOD & WELL PLANNED developments that can benefit the people WITHOUT CORRUPTION.
The Palace that Maha built in Putrajaya to live & work. Maha said it is the PEOPLES’ PALACE.
    Can I stay for a month ???
I have been to Romania Ceucescu’s Palace. Look AT Britain which has a much bigger economy & population than us. Humble Office.
Look at the National Convention Hall in Putrajaya costing > RM600 million & Football Stadium at Shah Alam costing about RM400 million. THEY ARE UNDER-UTILISED.
    MAHATHIR suffers from EGO problem.

I became disappointed when there was widespread CORRUPTION, NEPOTISM and CRONYISM.
Covering public interest contracts like TOLLS & HIGHWAYS under Official Secret Act is treacherous. How will it undermine NATIONAL SECURITY ??? What so secretive about the tolls unless you want to conceal & steal. Maha does NOT believe in TRANSPARENCY & ACCOUNTABILITY.
Maha got a mind for EVIL

Apparently Ampang Race Course (site of Petronas Twin Towers) sold the big piece of LAND to AK instead of the cash rich PETRONAS. WHY ???
Maha & Marina talked so much about the ICONIC Petronas TWIN TOWERS.
Building icons is SIMPLE if there is MONEY. Nothing GREAT.
Even religion cannot survive WITHOUT money.
With such amount of money, even a moron can build an even MORE EXPENSIVE, MOREOPULENT & MORE MAJESTIC Towers.
The question is, “What are the returns ????” Maybe tourists.
How much rental is PETRONAS getting ??? The project is losing money. @#@#@

App Mahathir’s son Mokzani got LUCRATIVE CONTRACTS from PETRONAS thru his company.
NOW Mokzani is one of the RICHEST MEN in MALAYSIA.
    Is Mokzani smart OR……………………….?

Mahathir’s BIGGEST mistake was to DIVIDE THE PEOPLE by his policy of AGAMA BANGSA NEGARA = ISLAM RACE NATION.
Maha divided the Nation & People. Not like during my days when all the races mix SO FREELY and without INHIBITION.
People in Malaysia are just living in an UNEASY relation with each other. Just tolerate each other. NOT love one another. SEGREGATION; INTIMIDATION; DOMINATION.
    They don’t trust each other.

Mahathir implemenyted POLICIES that discriminated against other races & religions.
    Mahathir is basically a RACIST.
Bill Hayden Australian Foreign Minister & Governor General called Mahathir a racist.
Marie Huhtala said Mahathir policies DISCRIMINATE other religions & races.
George Bush called UMNO a KU KLUX KLAN organization meaning they are RACIST & will BURN HOUSES & KILL PEOPLE OF OTHER RACES.
Malaysia is under US Watch LIST.
Malaysia has home grown TERRORISTS like AZAHARI & NORDIN MD TOP and many others.

Mahathir should have helped the POOR & by needs irregardless of RACE & RELIGION.
If most of the MALAYS are POOR, they will be helped.
Instead his policies are to help UMNO leaders & members. So the RICH MALAYS are entitled to help themselves DIRECTLY & INDIRECTLY.
    That poor Malays remain poor.

Mahathir is OVER-RATED by the controlled media & his cronies & of course his families.
He can talk. BUT unfortunately we can analyse objectively.
Husin Ali called Mahathir a LIAR & GANGSTER. @#@#@#

Malays said Mahathir is ZALIM (CRUEL)
Maha had abused his power by jailing politicians & NGO under ISA which had been abused as said by RAIS YATIM in his article. Operation LALLANG. Treatment of ZAHID HAMIDI.
Malay salesmen said, “MAHATHIR IS THE KING OF CORRUPTION.”

NOW Mahathir wants PEACE; CRIMINALISE WARS.
Is Mahathir a Man of Peace when he used to threatened voters with MAY 13 Killings ???

Mahathir is NO ANGEL. He used INTIMIDATION against his people.
Which PM continually threaten his people ???
Many politicians worry when they reach the end of their lives like SUHARTO.

The WAY to a LESS CORRUPT MALAYSIA is to have a 2 PARTY SYSTEM so that one can keep check on the other.
Malays are telling me to VOTE FOR THE OPPOSITION. IF THE OPPOSITION CANNOT DO ITS WORK PROPERLY, then VOTE BN BACk and vice versa. Fair deal.

With our resources & talents, I believe we could do much better & reach greater heights.

    CRITICISMS & CORRECTIONS WELCOME

Anwar Ibrahim was the Finance Minister in 1991 – 1998. Many of the accusations were during his time too.

Mr Barry Wain….. any second book ‘Malaysian Maverick : Anwar Ibrahim in Turbulent Times”?

Berani you all say me like that… Please don’t jealous me because I’m rich and dictator once. Who never do wrong thing in their life? I do it because is my bad habit. I snatch Anwar in to jail because he leave me no choice. That time My son want to suicide need my help to save his company. I mean u all have family right? I love my Power, Money and Family. As a father, I have to do something when our son is trouble. Ask Anwar help me, but he refuse. Is not his money is rakyat money, why he so busy buddy. So I put him in jail and give him my artificial scandal that good reason to put him in jail. That’s the power I have that time. but now no more. If I have, I will shut down this blog, streamyx shut down. everything bad to me will be shut off. Please la, be understand me. If you got that kind of power and already get used to. U all will same like me.I miss those days…
