(more…)

After being the target of slander, the Umno-BN leadership has now shifted their attacks from me to Tok Guru Nik Abdul Aziz. All sorts of accusations have been scattered by the government-owned media against the Islamic theologian. Umno leadership and its members are willing to bend truths and twist facts, even of a respected religious scholar, just as long as their aim to win the state constituency by-election of Permatang Pasir is fulfilled.
What more when they find themselves cornered by their own negligence in choosing a candidate, all efforts and propaganda machinery are engaged to create a fictional political story to serve as diversion. The Umno leadership should realise by now, that they are the ones who are raising doubts amongst fellow Malaysians with their narrow-minded racial politics
In the mean time, Pakatan Rakyat remains determined to bring forth change and a new political wave, despite the repeated and baseless accusations thrown at us. I am confident the people will make the right choice, for they no longer want to be taken for fools.
The name of Kim Dae-Jung, the former President of the Republic of Korea who died in Seoul yesterday, will resonate wherever in Asia people struggle against the fetters imposed by authoritarian regimes.
He was a leader who was willing to risk his life so that his countrymen would be free of the chains imposed by military regimes that ruled Korea from the 1960s onwards.
His courage in the face of danger to life and liberty shone like a beacon throughout the period of his struggles and, without doubt, the memory of its example will continue to inspire those on the continent who battle to free their societies from oppressive controls.
Kim Dae-Jung will also be remembered for his firm rejection of the argument, espoused by sundry Asian autocrats, that societies imbued with Confucian values are apt to prioritize social order and prosperity above the disorderly freedom of contentious democracies.
It was an argument he rebutted as intellectually shoddy and scorned for its implication that Asians would acquiesce to curtailments to their rights as long as their stomachs were full and their streets free of strife.
His name will occupy an imperishable niche in the history of the struggles waged by national patriots who were prepared to pay the highest price so that their people could enjoy the full measure of their humanity under freed polities.
PERMATANG PASIR, Aug 20 — The controversy surrounding Barisan Nasional candidate Rohaizat Othman’s disbarment took a new twist today when his partner, the one Umno accused of taking their client’s money, appeared to deny the allegation.
Yusri Ishak alleged that the money was used by Rohaizat to open up a branch of the firm in Ipoh and said that the Umno politician cannot deny involvement in the case.
