Tonight, once again, unfortunate news has dawned upon me, invoking great sorrow within me. This sad news comes from the South of the Korean peninsular. Former president Kim Dae Jung passed away today. The respected deceased, as a fighter, had never known the meaning of fear in his fight against cruelty under the regime of Park Chung Hee and Chun Doo Hwan.
Volume 17 of the Journal of Democracy year 2006 carried my essay, titled “Universal Values and Muslim Democracy”. My essay, amongst others, touches on the contribution of Kim Dae Jung and well known scholars, such as Amartya Sen and Tu Wei Ming, who succeeded in exposing the weaknesses of the “Nilai Asia” slander. The deceased strived hard to ensure that the principles and the spirit of democracy is strongly rooted in the national institution and is alive amongst the united people of South Korea.
The world has lost a leader who has always been determined to create a country that is prosperous, peaceful and without failures so as to protect the rights of the people. I want to take this opportunity to send my condolences to his entire family and hope that his journey as a fighter be a great inspiration to all.
