LDV, the troubled Birmingham vanmaker, asked a local court yesterday to suspend administration proceedings as hopes grew that it could be rescued by Weststar, a little-known company with ties to the Malaysian government and military.

The judge requested further information on the takeover deal, which the UK government is supporting with a £5m four-week bridging loan. The move to put the company into administration is expected to be cancelled in a couple of days, giving Weststar time to complete due diligence on LDV.

The government loan is conditional on manufacturing staying in the West Midlands. But the rescue attempt was greeted circumspectly by LDV’s 850 workers, who are inured to false dawns. One told the Financial Times: “It looks like good news on the face of it but we need to see what the concrete details of this takeover will be.”

Malaysia’s latest political crisis is unfolding in the northern state of Perak, where more than 60 people, including five opposition members of the national Parliament and five state assembly representatives, were detained by police yesterday during peaceful protests. It’s a test for the country’s new Prime Minister, Najib Razak, who took office last month after campaigning on a pledge of more political openness.

The arrests in Perak are the most recent episode in the political struggle between the opposition coalition led by former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the National Front coalition, led by Mr. Najib. Perak became a political battleground last year when Mr. Anwar’s alliance won control of it and four other state legislatures. Since then several Perak legislators have switched allegiance, putting the legislature back in the control of Mr. Najib’s coalition.

BANGKOK — In an extraordinary day that was part wrestling match, part democratic process, Malaysia’s governing party appeared to retake control of a major state legislature on Thursday when a group of unidentified men dragged the assembly speaker out of the hall and escorted the governing party’s choice to the empty seat.

The bare-knuckle proceedings, in the state of Perak, underlined the continued deep and bitter divisions between the country’s embattled governing party and a resurgent opposition. But they also showed the limits imposed by technology on the mildly authoritarian ways of Malaysia’s government.

Reports from the assembly hall streamed out over cellphones, the Internet and Twitter.

Khalil Idham Lim, an opposition assembly member, blogged throughout the heated exchanges and posted pictures, including one of the speaker being hauled away.

IPOH, Malaysia –Hundreds of black-clad activists protested Thursday in northern Malaysia, defying a police ban and jumping road blocks to denounce the ruling coalition’s takeover of a state legislature.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s alliance took control of northern Perak and four other states in elections last year – a major upset to the National Front coalition government.

But in February, Najib Razak – who became prime minister last month –orchestrated the defection of three Perak legislators from Mr. Anwar’s alliance, and the National Front moved to form a government in the state.

The struggle for control of Perak has sparked a bitter feud between Mr. Anwar and Mr. Najib, who is struggling to revive his coalition’s popularity amid racial tensions and allegations of corruption and economic mismanagement.

Mr. Najib’s move has come under intense scrutiny, raising complaints he is silencing dissent in violation of a campaign pledge to allow more openness.

On Thursday, the National Front convened a meeting of Perak’s state assembly for the first time since the takeover and planned to vote on measures to oust opposition representatives from key posts.

Any hope that Malaysia’s political situation would stabilize with the April selection of Najib Tun Razak as prime minister appeared to be dimming this week with the arrest of at least four individuals, one a political reformer who was charged with sedition, and with restiveness growing in the northern state of Perak.

Wong Chin Haut, a spokesman for the reform group Bersih (Clean) was arrested at his home Tuesday night in Kuala Lumpur after calling a press conference earlier in the day to urge the public to wear black Wednesday to protest the takeover of what was then the opposition-held Perak state government in February after Najib persuaded three assembly members to quit the opposition coalition amid charges that their allegiance had been bought.

On Wednesday, Parti Islam se-Malaysia vice president Mohamad Sabu, Parti Keadilan Rakyat Youth Leader Badrul Hisham and another unnamed activist were arrested as well. It isn’t known what they were charged with. Local media reported that Mohamad Sabu had publicly announced he would seek to hold mass prayers of the PAS followers in Ipoh over the Perak state assembly sitting.

Dozens of people in Malaysia have been arrested for taking part in opposition-led protests over who controls the parliament in the state of Perak.

Police were deployed outside the state legislature, while inside ministers scuffled and shouted at each other.

The state has become the focus of a power struggle between Malaysia’s ruling party and the main opposition.

The opposition lost its majority when three legislators defected to become independents earlier this year.

The Sultan of Perak fired the alliance’s administration and asked the National Front to govern, but there is still no real agreement over who is in charge.

The high court will decide on the legitimacy of the new state government next week.
