Dari Malaysiakini
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has backed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim as Parliamentary opposition leader and to lead the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
In a contrasting view from his party chair Karpal Singh following Karpal’s outburst, Lim said the Pakatan Rakyat leadership has clearly endorsed a position that no individual party policy can be a Pakatan policy unless it is endorsed unanimously by all three parties.
“I would like to state that the DAP reaffirms its support for Pakatan Rakyat to establish an alternative government that is democratic, people-centric and with an ethical leadership based on the five principles of freedom, justice, truth, social welfare and universal moral values,” he said.
“In this regard, the DAP supports Anwar as the Parliamentary Opposition Leader, and will remain so, There is no single leader who has ever questioned this during internal meetings.”
Different views normal
Lim, who is also the Penang Chief Minister said this in a statement in responding to Karpal’s call on Anwar to step down as Pakatan Rakyat leader.
Karpal had blamed Anwar for the disarray in Pakatan which was caused by the PKR leader’s continuous rhetoric of forming government with the aid of defectors from Barisan Nasional.
“He has created enough trouble and it is time for him to bertaubat (repent). It’s time Pakatan got itself another leader,” the DAP chairperson said in his scathing attack on Anwar.
Lim acknowledges there are different view points within Pakatan but all these are taken in stride in the opposition coalition.
Referring to the hudud issue as an example, DAP’s view on hudud is crystal clear and regardless of whatever support for hudud and the establishment of an Islamic state, whether from PAS or PKR, this will not be the Pakatan Rakyat’s policy as long as DAP does not agree with it.
“Similarly, the DAP leadership has been consistently urging the government to enact an anti-hopping law even before the Perak crisis. We have also expressed support of our MPs to do so. As BN does not have a two-third parliamentary majority, the support of all 28 DAP MPs will be required to effect any constitutional amendment for such anti-hopping laws.”
Lim said as party secretary-general, he was duty-bound to execute these policies but should any member wishes to change them, they are required to use proper party channels to do so.
Emploring Karpal to use proper party channel Lim said “I appeal to Karpal as chair of the DAP to use internal party channels and not use the BN-controlled media, should he wish to change these policies or even criticise my leadership.”
The DAP secretary-general emphasised the party remains committed towards a multi-racial, multi religious and multi-cultural Malaysia, and its deep conviction in the Bangsa Malaysia concept.
“DAP is inclusive of all races and religions. We represent the interests and fights for the rights of every Malaysian,” said Lim.
DAP will have to grow
However, he pledged that the party was willing to undertake a transformational process which may be painful but necessary.
“We have no alternative but to grow without compromising our basic principles,” he said.
“As a democratic party, DAP policies can be changed in accordance with the wishes of its members. However until today there has been no requests to question or disturb the basic framework of co-operation between the three parties of DAP, PAS and PKR that makes up Pakatan Rakyat.”
Pakatan Rakyat controls 82 seats, compared to 137 BN-controlled legislators in the 222-seat lower House of Parliament.
Commenting on the issue, Penang Gerakan Youh chief Oh Tong Keong has called on Lim to state whether he supports “party-hopping” as a means of forming a government.
“They had different stands on the hudud law issue, yet DAP did not dare leave Pakatan. This is because DAP members want to remain in power and did not dare offend PAS or PKR,” the Star quoted Oh as saying.

I am a Christian but I have all the confidence in MB Nizar to lead the multi-racial, religious govt of Perak. But I am a Sarawakian.

This is not the time to have any conflict within the PR. We must stand together and fight till the end in the name of DEMOCRACY for the RAKYAT. Indifferences are common especially in big families. But it is only a matter of time that these differences will be settled in an amicable way. Even spouses have differences at times. BRAVO Guan Eng, your decision is right. The RAKYAT is behind you all the way.

I agree. Our leaders must stand together for the fight. The blame should not be on Anwar alone. It is collective. Even Saudara Karpal must stand together with Hadi Awang for our great nation of Malaysia

Karpal is the one who needs to go. It’s about time he ‘bertaubat’. He is the one who is creating the disarray among the united opposition. He is the one who is pulling everybody down. He is indeed a burden that needed to be removed.
Firstly, DO NOT question Anwar, who has given DAP the oppotunity to once again be in Malaysia’s political map. He has unite the otherwise broken opposition. He is bringing hope to Malaysia. Karpal needs Anwar to survive. Not the other way round.
Secondly, DO NOT openly challenge my king!!!! Never will I let an old idiot like Karpal to make such disrespectful remarks against my king. I repeat… NEVER!!!

DAP does not need Anwar to be where they are now. You must be very young to have such a concept and clearly do not know the politics of Malaysia well.
Though you are not totally wrong about Karpal being a burden, he is certainly NOT an idiot to question the Sultan’s decision. You are an absolute IDIOT of the real deal to make remarks about Karpal. Is the Sultan above the law? Can he just slap you just because he doesn’t like your stupid look?

Gerakan and MCA both have decided to leave the BN and the PPP too has done the same. So what is this small boy mumbling about. The issue here is of survival and be sustainable for the needs of modern day voters. Be strong in combating corruption and Karpal’s insistent is a signof his own weakness. He is quarelling about his “Chairmanship” rather than the nation. Remeber just befor the Perak issue Tengku Rithaudeen of UMNO proposed the dissolution of all UMNO “wings” because of corruption and 900 reports concerning “politik wang” in UMNO should be given prominence.Anwar has done his best on this corruption issue. But what has Karpal done..almost nothing except minting money. Guan End is the future leader most apt to lead the nation as a team player.

it is healthy in a democracy for dissenting views …
at least it is not like BN … if they have said something wrong against their leadership; first thing to go is their head …
the key thing is … we can agree to disagree …
i feel sorry for YB Karpal Singh … every since the nasty road accident few years ago and that he is on wheel chair most of the time.

mengapa sdr karpal tak faham, kita berdepan dgn sebuah parti yg sering menggunakan taktik menarik pemimpin2 atau wakil2 rakyat.dari dulu lagi sejak kemerdekaan.taktik2nya akan berterusan sehingga rakyat akan muak dan membenci.(sogokan yg lumayan, ugutan yg dahsyat, gerakan jentera2 kerajaan)apakah perbezaan perhimpunan gerakan rakyat dgn perhimpunan gerakan UMNO?(TEAR GAS,ISA,didakwa ,water canon, akta hasutan,…………,lain pula diberikan keutamaan, membantukan agar misinya tercapai, apapun kesilapan dpt diselesaikan.)kita berdepan dgn satu kuasa yg telah lama wujud.takan seketika dpt diselesaikan, apatah lagi dah mula bertindak, kita harus menangkisnya dgn segala daya.

Karpal was being emotional despite his long serve as a parliamentary member where he should be cautious when making statement .Karpal must have regretted deep down with what he said but he was too cocky to admit that .I believe he became so vulnerable and fragile due to not being heard by his party members (but little did he realise of the fact of why he was not heard all this while ) .Not to mention provocation by people around him who took opportunities to instigate hatred for their own reason .If this is really the case ,It is unfortunate and shameful to Karpal who now can easily be defeated by his own shadow .Sulky and at rage .Nonetheless ,statement made by Lim Guan Eng is crystal clear that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is still relevant and very much needed indeed to unite the Pakatan .Whatever it may come I still believe that none of the Pakatan supporters can easily be swayed with this issue .We know the truth will prevail and the truth is Pakatan Rakyat under the leadership of DSAI will eventually bring the glory of the people in near future .InsyaAlLAH .

Lim Guan Eng’s right in expressing his view that DSAI should remain the PR chief. Karpal’s a veteran politician. He should know very well the current political landscape of Malaysia and its dilemma. Can DAP really do it along without the cooperation of the other two PR partners despite their differences in some major issues? Or can PR coaltion make it to the finishing line at PRU13 without DSAI at the helm? DSAI can effectively bring the leaders of the three partners together but some differences remain. At least there are major merging points that the three partners agree to facing their common political rival, BN/UMNO. PR coalition with DSAI at the helm has the support of all the ethnic groups in Malaysia.

I have to disagree with this: Lim said the Pakatan Rakyat leadership has clearly endorsed a position that no individual party policy can be a Pakatan policy unless it is endorsed unanimously by all three parties.
Its best that decisions are endorsed based on 2/3 majority of the seats held by the mps for PKR, PAS AND DAP. Isnt it in line with our parliamentary voting? We practice democracy in this country. To me, be it BN or Pakatan Rakyat must follow the 2/3 majority rule in decision making. Before any policy is passed, of course lots of debates, forums, brainwashing and think tank exercise should be held in a close door session within pakatan rakyat mps. More brains involved in policy endorsement is much2 better! A ship cannot have THREE CAPTAINS! The 2/3 majority rule IS THE CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP IN PAKATAN RAKYAT! Somebody have to be leader and somebodies must be followers ONCE the 2/3 majority have been achieved!
To get the best result in this 2/3 majority vote, all votings from the mps in the pakatan rakyat MUST BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL meaning SECRET BALLOT! The truth and the best solution to endorse pakatan policy must be achieved through secret ballot!
If 2/3 make the mistakes in the policy making, its too bad but its democratic way to share responsibility for any policy to be endorsed.
As the great leader ANWAR IBRAHIM SAYS, every leaders of pakatan rakyat must be clean from corruption and abuse of power, in short really a clean guy and also as each leader treating anak melayu anak saya, anak cina anak saya, anak india anak saya, anak dayak anak saya, anak kadazan anak saya and all the anaks, so whatts the problems with the voting system by secret ballot is enforced?
How I wish, the rakyat of Malaysia have truly clean leaders that are free from corruption, abuse of power, nepotism and cronism and inteliigent to manage the economic well being of the people and the nation!
Sometimes, I wish all important posts are given high salaries and perks SO THAT THERES NO NEED to go for corruption as a means to earn more money! If u are good, u are good meaning u deserve the high salary and perks! Those who are qualified to earn these perks and heavy responsibilities, they deserve them but those who are not qualified, must work harder to be recognised and at all times be gentleman to accept there are better people than oneself.
