BEIJING – CHINA has ordered its officials to cut down on expensive cars and overseas travel this year as Beijing strives to cope with the impact of the global financial crisis, state media said on Thursday.
Officials should also be careful not to spend too much on meetings and receptions, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing unnamed sources at the finance ministry.
Meanwhile, the government will strengthen its controls on the way public money is spent and crack down on embezzlement, according to the agency.
Finance Minister Xie Xuren warned on Monday that the economy faced a ‘very severe’ 2009 and indicated government budgets would be strained as taxes were cut to stem the economic slowdown.
The finance ministry’s remarks are the latest sign of official worry over the nation’s financial and economic situation as the problems caused by the global crisis continue to strain China’s export-dependent economy.
