KUALA LUMPUR, 2 Dec 2008: Former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim was tonight sacked from Umno with immediate effect due to his actions, such as attending the opposition parties’ annual assemblies.
Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya Selatan Umno division chief Kapt (Rtd) Zahar Hashim’s party membership was suspended for three years for making statements criticising the party.
At a press conference after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting here, Prime Minister and party president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said stern action was taken against Zaid as Umno needed to be consistent and avoid double standards in taking disciplinary action against errant members.
According to the Umno constitution, a sacked member could not appeal against the decision, Abdullah said.
“There were actions by Zaid seen as going against the party rules,” he said.
Zaid was issued a show cause letter by Umno for writing an open letter to the prime minister and for meeting with Members of Parliament (MPs) to repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA).
He had also recently come under fire for attending the DAP victory dinner on 28 Nov, and the Parti Keadilan Rakyat congress the next day.
Earlier, his remarks on ketuanan Melayu also raised the ire of several Umno leaders, who demanded that he apologise. Zaid, however, refused.
The former Kota Baru Member of Parliament was appointed a senator by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on 18 March and made minister in the prime minister’s department, in charge of legal affairs and the judiciary.
During his tenure, he tried to spearhead judicial reform, but found little support among his colleagues in the cabinet.
He resigned as minister on 15 Sept over the use of the ISA to detain blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok and Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng on 12 Sept. Kok and Tan were later released

Now what do you have to say about UMNO. They sacked one of the few decent people in their party. Nothing but wrong move one after another. PR need to speed up and take over the FEderal government.
about time zaid….bravo….
Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.Fight for your right Mr.Zaid
Find something you love to do and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. You can do what you want to do. You can be what you want to be
UMNO must be a very special organization or instituion in this whole Big World. One could say it is a party or organization which is above God or Bigger than God. Why? Well according to the Umno’s constitution, a sacked member could not appeal against the decision as emphasized by UMNO’s chief Abdullah. This makes UMNO special and much bigger than God. In Islam a person who has transgressed against God could still beg for God’s forgiveness and mercy because Allah has more or less given an-open datede cheque to all human beings that He is Maha Pengampun dan Maha Penyayang (All Forgiving and All Loving). But look at UMNO! It calls itself a party that champions the cause and plight of Malays and so-called Muslims. Does UMNO forgive its members who make critial comments about the party? Does UMNO tolerate its members who shake hands with members of the Opposition Party? No under UMNO you can only and must listen only to the words of UMNO TAIKOs. You cannot be friends with people of different ideological parties in the country. You must show your loyalty only to the leaders of the party and only to the party. What does UMNO think it is? Does UMNO think that it is INFALLIBLE? Does UMNO think that it i comprised of people who committ NO SINS against ALlah? UMNO has shown to the whole nation that it is a sick party - a party with a one-track-mind. Definitely it is a party not for the 21st cetury Malaysia and least of all for the future generation of Malaysians.
mansuhkan ISA sepertimana OBAMA ingin mansuhkan NSA(guantanamo bay) dengan segera sebelum keadaan menjadi kecoh lagi…

Tak tahu jangan cakap la..kalau tak ada ISA, entah berapa banyak kumpulan militan yang akan muncul nanti..bila dah jadi macam tu, sana-sini jadi kacau baru mula nak terfikir balik faedahnya ISA tu..masa tu dah tak guna dah..Anwar tu pengkhianat bangsa..

Per Malaysiakini:
Last Saturday he made a shocking appearance at the PKR national congress opening. He however had denied that he had joined any of the opposition parties.
“Yes, yes, I am still in Umno. I have not been sacked yet,” he had told reporters on Saturday.
And on Friday night, he was seen at the DAP victory dinner in Penang.
Hey Sarah Palin was seen in the company of Mr. Obama. The republicans did not fire her. Umno is just scared!!
hahaha
inilah “demokrasi”
kalau puji2 umno boleh
kalau nak hadir kongress parti lain
konfem sumpah salah

Zaid’s probably quite thankful they put him out of his misery. The respect he has already garnered as a man of principle will grow and glow even more, now that they have sacked him. Well done.
Dear DSAI and DSWA,
Please have a grand welcome party for Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to PKR and please invite me also so I can show my full support and welcome to him.
Dear DSAI,
Nothing and absolutely nothing shocks the Rakyat anymore! In the events leading to the next GE, there will certainly be “heads rolling” in a similar fashion! One fine morning when UMNO wakes up before the next GE, there will not be anymore members left! The mother-of-all sackings will certainly be Najib’s!!!
Das
Syabas Dato’ Zaid.
Dato’ Zaid should have left UMNO long time ago based on his series of allegations that he was not “welcomed” by his UMNO comrades even when he was in the Cabinet.
Do join PKR, Dato’….together we can achieve more. TOWARDS BETTER MALAYSIA FOR DESERVING MALAYSIANS.

i’m with you, Silent Majority Group.
my salute to you Datuk Zaid Ibrahim!!!
you gain all our RESPECT and sure are a towering Malay to bring glory back to Malaysia!!
may GOD bless you & your family.
the best thing UMNO has done this year so far.
Zaid wasn’t sacked. Zaid sent his resignation to the PM who rejected it.
The government had to have the last word and sacked him….
Perhaps the government should get its story right… Zaid never wanted to stay in Barisan Nasional so I suggest it stop pandaring about who did what, and get on with its job and GOVERN… Grow up Barisan Nasional!
Dear DSAI,
I propose Zaid Ibrahim as the next MP candidate when there is a bye-election. This is to secure the services of an asset under the PKR, not to mention, letting UMNO be aware of the rakyat’s wishes.
Secondly, we need to “upgrade” the PKR MPs experiences, judgement call, and education to be able to administer Ministries brilliantly. We should send them for post-graduate educational courses and exchange programme to overseas Universities -to broaden their minds and attitudes. We want all-rounded thinking Ministers when PR / PKR wins the General Election in the near future. of course practical experience is important but without a further education, they will be always lagging behind the current world thinking in politics.
Best regards,
Mooner

The nearest “next by-election” is Kuala Terengganu Parliamentary seat. For the sake of unity of Pakatan Rakyat, the seat should be given to MAT SABU, instead of DATO’ ZAID.
I am confident DATO’ ZAID can wait. Let us hope that more BN MPs passed away, so that we can field more icons from Pakatan Rakyat………..
