PKR ready to back PAS candidate for Kuala Terengganu, says Anwar

From The Edge Daily

By Chan Kok Leong

SHAH ALAM: On the last day of debates at Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s 5th Congress here yesterday, de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said PKR had no issues with a PAS candidate for the impending Kuala Terengganu by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the death of its parliamentarian and deputy minister of education Datuk Razali Ismail on Friday.

The Election Commission is expected to announced the date for a by-election within 60 days of officially receiving notice from parliament.

During the previous two elections, PAS candidates were fielded for the 90% Malay majority constituency of 65,000 voters.

At his closing speech yesterday at Malawati Stadium, Anwar, who is Opposition Leader, said there were many within PKR who called for a candidate from their party to contest the by-election.

Answering them, Anwar said: “Although the final decision on which party will contest in Kuala Terengganu lies with Pakatan Rakyat, the meaning of consultation is about the willingness to help one another.”

“In the last by-election (where he won the Permatang Pauh seat), PAS fully supported us and if PAS is to field a candidate for Kuala Terengganu, we will return the gestures,” said the opposition leader.

During his winding-up speech, Anwar reiterated the party is committed to restoring “immunity” to the rulers, as stipulated in the Federal Constitution.

On Saturday, president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said at a press conference that the party intends to return legislation veto powers to the monarchy. Article 181 of the Federal Constitution was amended in 1984, whereupon bills passed in Parliament can automatically become laws after 30 days, regardless of whether the King assents to them or not.

Meanwhile, vice-president Azmin Ali suggested that states governed by Pakatan Rakyat should start attracting young voters by having bigger budgets for youth programmes.

With more such activities, he said, the Pakatan parties can get closer to youths.

Earlier, director of strategy Saifuddin Nasution had said that an estimated two million new voters are expected to take part in the next general election, which must be held by 2013. He also reminded delegates that there were still many Malaysians who were not registered voters.

Other suggestions included calls for the formation of a shadow cabinet to monitor the administration of the government.

Penang delegate Tan Tee Beng said it was important for the party to have one so that a system of checks and balances can be created to monitor the government.

“Although a shadow cabinet opens our views to scrutiny or even manipulation, it is an important start to convince Malaysians of our seriousness in becoming the next federal government,” said Tan.

Recently, civil society groups urged PKR to set up a shadow cabinet to prove that they are ready to govern.

DSAI, please by all means work hard and win this grand mother of all by election.

We already have enough of incompetencies and inefficiencies from BN government.

Yesterday the Prime Minister spoke on national TV and said that the revenue from the oil exports will drop drastically due to the falling crude oil prices. Who doesn’t know this ? Even a primary school student would have known this but coming from the PM. I expect the PM to say the following : “the price of crude oil has dropped from a high of USD147/barrel in August to below USD50 / barrel currently and this will result in a corresponding drop in the revenue for the government. However, the government has already implement such and such a diversification project to cushion this shortfall as the government does not rely on this oil revenue to fund its expenditure. ”

However, we see no such action taken by the Prime Minister who expect money to rain from the sky. Sad to say, money don’t rain from the sky. Only water will come down .Thats why the East Coast states are always flooded time and again and for years.

When the price of crude oil shot through the roof, the Goverment hired a professor from the London School Of Economics to talk up the price of petrol and burden the rakyat . Now the price of petrol has fallen from the high of RM2.70 per litre , the price of the consumer goods still remained at the August 2008 level with no let up.

Such is the quality of the LSE professor and the government. If both of them are smart, they would have been able to see the direction of the price of crude oil and if they have the rakyat at heart, the government should not have increase have increase the price of petrol from RM1.92 to RM2.70. But then again, we cannot discount the fact that there are hidden agenda which only the government will know.

DSAI, you have been the Finance Minister before. Please work on this. We need a top notch forward looking Finance Minister for the country.

Yesterday I was watching the programme Cents and Sensibility on Channel News Asia which aired the achievement of George Soros. Among his high achievement was his shorting the British pound in 1992 which he profited USD1 billion on a single day which reminds me of this zero sums game in which our BNM was playing at the other end losing RM5.7 billion. If the BNM has RM5.7 billion to throw away, they should have thrown it to the rakyat. Each of the rakyat would have received more than RM200.00 which will come in handy for the new school term.

    Good luck.

Syabas PKR!!

    Sdr DSAI

Terlebih dahulu, syabas atas kejayaan PKR menganjurkan Kongres Nasional.

    Syabas.
