KARPAL SINGH (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) today managed to get the signatures of 57 MPs — a quarter of the total of 222 — to file a motion under Standing Order 36(8) and Article 127 of the Federal Constitution to debate the conduct of Chief Justice Tan Sri Zaki Azmi.
At a press conference at the parliament lobby, Karpal said the 57 were made up of Pakatan Rakyat MPs as well as an independent MP from Sepanggar, Datuk Eric Enchin Majimbun.
He said Article 127 of the Federal Constitution allows for the debate on the conduct of a judge with the support of one-fourth of the MPs.

PETALING JAYA: Former adviser to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Dr Munawar Anees, will submit an application to the Court of Appeal to overturn the Federal Court decision to dismiss his appeal against a 1998 sodomy conviction within the next few days.
He said his counsel advised him to do so after the Federal Court dismissed his appeal on Oct 30.
Chief Justice Tun Zaki Azmi, who presided over a three-judge panel, offered no clarification as to the grounds for the dismissal of the case.

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of parliament (MPs) from both sides of the bench stopped their usual bickering and crossed partisan lines yesterday to support a motion tendered by Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi (Batu Pahat-BN) to discuss Israel’s ongoing blockade of the Gaza.
In rejecting the motion, Deputy Speaker Datuk Ronald Kiandee said the Malaysian government has made its stand known to the world on the matter through a statement in October when it asked for strict action to be taken against the Israeli regime.
“I am satisfied that the issue is not urgent and need not be discussed here,” he said, drawing protests from both sides of the House.
