Parliament: Emergency motion over 3 mega projects

From The Star, By Loh Foon Fong

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim filed an emergency motion in Parliament on Wednesday to call for a Royal Commission to be established to investigate the doubts and controversies over the Federal Government’s decision to spend on three controversial mega projects.

The three mega projects are the RM11.31bil High Speed Broadband Project, the RM4.26bil purchase of the Bank Internasional Indonesia by Maybank and the RM1.7bil procurement of 12 units of the Eurocopter Cougar EC 725 helicopters.

Anwar said this in the motion addressed to the Dewan Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.

Anwar claimed that on Sept 16, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also the Finance Minister, had approved the High Speed Broadband hastily at a price deemed too high and without any open tender process.

On Sept 30, Najib had also approved the purchase of 56% of the shares in the Bank International Indonesia through Maybank and it was a waste of the nation’s funds because the shares were bought at a price five times higher than the book value, he said.

Two days before he moved from the Defence Ministry to the Finance Ministry, a letter of intent was issued for the purchase of 12 helicopters, a deal made in a dubious manner, said Anwar.

“Although the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi had on Oct 28 announced that the Government had decided to postpone the purchase, it had not removed people’s doubt over the earlier decision to purchase the Eurocopter helicopters,” he said in the motion.

The Dewan Rakyat will decide Thursday whether the emergency motion will be accepted.

terima kasih DSAI bagi depa kaw kaw.

why do we need the RM11.31 bil. high speed broad band now?
why do we need the RM1.7 bil. helicopters?
why do we need to spend RM4.26 bil. to buy a bank in Indonesia?

do we really need the submarine?
do we really need to send someone to space?

if all the above is shelved, there’s no need for Najis to “borrow” RM5 bil. from EPF.

please DSAI, change the Malaysian Management ASAP.
the Rakyat’s hard earned money is being mismanaged.

PKNS telah lama diperkudakan UMNO Selangor jadi ada kemungkinan pemimpin kanan bumiputera dalam PKNS cenderung untuk memberikan masalah kepada MB seperti yang berlaku pada SYABAS. sending astronout, the idea seems very promising, but i really think we can wait..we must focus to the education issue first, about how to produce astronout and experties in this field..
kita bleh ada kpal selam, bleh wat broad band , tp caranya kna betul..bukannya asyik suap kroni ja..kna fikir jgak kesesuaian masa.. tengah kemelut mcm ni, kepentingan rkyat prlu diutamakan..
but i bet, they will reject this motion, same as what they’ve done before concerning about other issues..if they are brave enough, just face this motion.come clean about everything if there’s no hidden agenda whatsoever..

    layman Reply:

    Salam.

Kita pun tidak membantah pesawat Nuri perlu ditukar. Tetapi mestilah telus.

    Persoalannya:

Obviously the government have no idea what they are doing…

They are splurging public funding for projects that do not help the low to middle income bracket ie: the majority.

Do you know what the majority of Singapore’s expenses are?
Expansion of public subway transportation… in fact there are subway stations that have been created that have not yet been utilised because the subway station construction is ahead of schedule.

And this government believes it needs to spend more on helicopters, broad band and bank acquisitions?

What about investing in the future? What about controlling inflation through less reliance on motor vehicles? What about education? What about welfare for the hardcore impoverished? What about maintenance of basic foot paths that are falling apart? There are so many things that can be listed that have a higher priority over the governments decisions…

Sure broadband may need to be upgraded, but is this a national priority?

The Priority now is to spend money on public infrastructure and maintenance!

Not to blow it on defence expenditure that will not assist the Rakyat in these trying times!

This is the government that is in Power! You would think Malaysian leaders were the cream of the crop in Malaysian society.. the movers.. the shakers.. the elite…. But no…

They are the builders of a motor that runs… an achievement in itself.. but the only problem is.. the motor is stuck in reverse..

    It’s Time for Change!

Proton - A Malaysian Government owned company Acquires MV Augusta 70 Million EUROS
Proton - A Malaysian Government owned company sells MV Augusta for 1 EURO

MayBank - A Malaysian Government owned company acquires Bank International Indonesia for 4.26 BILLION RINGGIT
Maybank - A Malaysian Government owned company sells Bank International Indonesia for ?????

What do you think? 1 Ringgit?

I have no idea how this government could have stayed in power for 51 years? It boggles the mind.

If Tan Sri Pendekar reject the motion, Pakatan must not stop and keep the pressure.
Any other options apart from Emergency motion?.
Will it not be better if the money spent for the benefit of the poor especially those in Sabah and Sarawak?
Some hidden hand must be behind the Couger helicopter deal or otherwise how could they issue the LOI.Despite knowing the state of the nation economy and the financial turmoil all over the world, and yet the gomen proceed with the decision to purchase the 12 helicopters. This is really ridiculous and a clear indication of irresponsible and arrogant gomen.
The possible economic crisis were all too evident, other nations are scrambling to respond to the crisis but in Malaysia we find the gomen is approving and making decision to spend money on mega projects. PM explanation on the Eurocopter deal was unsatisfactory, show the rakyat or at least to all MPs as to how they arrived to a decision and don’t simply say the present helis are ageing and the are too many crashes, so just because the chopper crash, we buy new helicopter.
Pakatan Rakyat over to you and tell Pak Lah no more cover up and no more excuses.

I have been following the recent development of the Eurocopter purchase and the removal of the minimum 30% bumiputra equity on public listed companies.

Please don’t fall into the BN trap.

MCA when making this proposal to remove the mimimun 30% bumiputra equity on public listed companies is under the instruction from AAB. Having been under the spot light for the failed scam on the Eurocopter deal and many other fiasco, he has to divert the heat to other issues . So he ask MCA to raise this 30% notion and hence diverting the attention. Of course, he has already informed MCA before hand not to worry , you scratch my back and I will lick yours.

DSAI , please don’t give up on this . Dig up all the skeletons over this purchase of the Eurocopter. AAB and Najis must be brought down. RM2.3b is not a small amount of money. Bring AAB and Najis to the book.

Given the fact that Brazil can buy 50 units of the same helicopter for the price of 12 units which Malaysia is paying, the 12 units that AAB has approved to purchase must be the best in the world : gold plated guns and gold main and auxilliary engines.

Please don’t squabble internally ( DAP and PAS ) over the 30% equity issue. I am a Malaysian Chinese and working overseas but I kept myself updated on the political developments in my own country. To me the 30% equity, the social contract , etc is not an issue. I know that all these are already in the Constitution and I have accepted what is laid down in the Constitution so do most Malaysians for that matter.

The reason all these subjects are brought up time and again by BN is because BN is trying to divert the common Malaysian attention to these racial issues in order to camoflage their misdeeds of putting their hands in the till for themselves.

AAB is not stupid but he is acting stupid in order to gain sympathy while he rob the nation further. Every move that he make has an ulterior motive. Watch him closely.

    Bumi Ownz U Reply:

I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you in relation to the 30% equity issue.
We can not ignore and forget the fact that the Indian community being the poorest have 0 equity in anything….BTW..I am chinese.

Sure, this government knows that when the next election is held, it will lose…

So what is it doing now? Its trying to get cashed up for their early retirement.

I do not understand how anybody could be sympathetic to the leader of the Malaysian people… does Malaysia feel no sympathy for the Poor indiansm chinese and Malays struggling to survive?

Or do we live in a society where we should look out for our own…

That has been Malaysia’s problem for far too long… the chinese just want to get rich, the malays just want a fair go and the indians just want their voices heard….

The key is not forgetting about the injustices inherent in the constitution… the key is how do we bring abouts change of this government, when the political machinery is geared to keep them in power?

Is outcome of Munawar’s appeal indicative of what we can expect from Zaki Azmi…new Boss of the Malaysian Judiciary
Chief Justice Zaki Azmi beginning to throw his true colours…

Will he be able to be INDEPENDENT of UMNO and his past friends, and be able to be concerned only with justice…

Will he be a progressive judge only concerned with JUSTICE - not fearful of developing the law so that justice be done…or will he just remain a tool of UMNO and his ‘old friends’.

Also noted that Zaki Azmi was a businessman with involvement in a string of companies - and if so, he must recuse himself from any case involving those companies and/or related companies or even companies whereby his once fellow member of the Board of Directors or management is involved.
