Anwar defends his track record

Malaysiakini | October 22, 2008

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim today hit out at his detractors, especially those who questioned his track record as finance minister, saying he was responsible for having passed one of the largest allocations ever recorded for Sabah, during his tenure.

During the debate which followed Johari Abdul’s (PKR-Sungai Petani) speech, in which Johari had slammed the government for failing to help bumiputeras, Abdul Rahman Dahlan (BN-Kota Belud) intervened to ask about Anwar’s role during his time in government.

“What did the opposition leader do (for bumiputeras) during his eight years as finance minister?” asked Abdul Rahman.

Unfazed by Johari’s assertions – that he (Johari) and Anwar, among others, had struggled against corruption and nepotism until the latter’s sacking from Umno in 1998 and were punished for it – Abdul Rahman repeated his challenge, saying “Can you just answer the question?”

At this point, Anwar stood up and took leave from Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia to answer Abdul Rahman himself.

“I just want to clarify as there are some among my Umno colleagues who have asked about my tasks and role while in Umno and in government, and suggestions have been raised that we had purportedly abandoned the problems of Sabah’s people,” said Anwar.

He did not mention Salleh Kalbi (BN-Silam) by name, but it was Salleh who yesterday compared Anwar to a ‘second-hand car’ trying to shed a mangled past and refurbish himself as the new champion of all Malaysians.

Recalling Anwar’s statements while in government more than 10 years ago, Salleh said the former deputy prime minister was in Parliament for the second time in his life and trying to ‘deceive’ the people in Sabah and Sarawak into seeing him as their saviour.

Anwar, however, said his track record spoke volumes of his contributions, especially to Sabah. Among these, he claimed, was the largest allocation up to then granted to the eastern state as part of the federal government’s budget.

“For as long as I was a minister in the government… until 1998, I as finance minister had passed the largest allocation to Sabah and Sarawak including, within a period of one year, an additional RM800 million … for Sabah and RM200 million for the supplementary budget, a record at that time.

“But because of prejudice (against me), all this is denied. Speaker, on the issue of bumiputeras, we placed a network for bumputeras who are capable of advancing to be uplifted,” he said.

‘Speak as noble warriors’

As Barisan backbenchers shouted hoots of derision at him, Anwar took the opportunity to deal them a stinging criticism of their behaviour, which effected an unusual silence among the ruling Barisan MPs.

He also played on Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia’s name to compare how real ‘warriors’ conducted themselves in contrast to the behaviour of Barisan parliamentarians.

“They can scream while hiding behind the microphones, but that is not the way of warriors.

“If they really are pandikar (fighters) and pahlawan (warriors), they would stand and speak and answer. They would not scream under the tables as what is happening now,” he said.

“If only they stood as warriors who are mulia (noble) and amin (trustworthy),” he added.

“If we differ in views, that does not matter. But it must be based on facts, not by heaping insults and slander. Stand, if you do not agree with Sungai Petani, and argue based on facts,” Anwar said.

Well done Datuk Seri. I have seen all these monkey business by the backbenchers way back in 1995. Pretty impressive the acts of some of them and a few got rewarded as ministers it seems. I trust the common subjects of this country wanting to see and hear civilised cultured representatives in debate and one who understands the phrase ‘agree to disagree’ and demonstrates such virtues accordingly and appropriately. The rakyat have had enough of senility stupidity nonsensical moronic characters equal to those of a non compos mentis.

Sungguh tak bermoral dan tak profession dalam menjalankan tanggungjawab pada diri sendiri! Muka tak Malu, terang-terang Ahli Parlimen BN tak ada sopan santun langsung.

    Anwar,

I noticed that since putting your takeover of the federal govt plans through defections on hold, you have been unusually quiet. And so have the PR leaders. At the same time, UMNO and MCA are making a lot of noise, UMNO with having kicked Pak Lah and Najib and Muhyiddin taking over with Mahathir as grand adviser, MCA with election of Ong Tee Keat and Chua Soi Lek as president and deputy president respectively. Though there are no visible indications, I think many people believe that Najib as incoming PM has somehow weakened your original takeover plans. You now see Anifah Aman (one of those touted to defect)openly attacking PR and endorsing BN and SAPP making it clear they are “pro-BN opposition”. Correct me if I am wrong, in fact I would be pleased to be corrected – but is PR losing steam and energy? This must not, and should not be so. Don’t let all the efforts PR has studiously built to enable you to craft a 2-party system in parliament capable of taking over in the next round. Already with Najib, Muhyiddin and Mahathir consolidating their hold in UMNO, everyone knows they will go all out to regain the support PR won on 8 Mar. Mainstream papers which are pro-UMNO had attempted to run PR down with the recent decision of the High Court in Alor Star to withdraw UMNO’s petition, mischievously twisting the line that Zulkifli would defect. Although this turned out to be false, nevertheless it makes PR feel so very vulnerable.

Anwar, you must take the opportunity now of leading PR into the offensive as all is not well in UMNO despite their moves at consolidation. Pak Lah continues to resist Najib/Muhyiddin’s move to bring f/w UMNO elections to Dec from Mar. Expect them to kill each other, but once they heal their rift, then they will go all out to destroy PR.

Now is the time, Anwar, for you and PR to continue your attack on Najib’s lack of credibility and the certainty that UMNO/BN would revert, indeed, even intensify Mahathir’s fascist policies of human rights abuses via ISA, corruption, nepotism, lack of transparency, culture of denial, which everyone – Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazans, etc – are fed up.

You must seize the initiative to attack them before they get the chance to unite again, and lobby the international arena for support in addition to doing it locally. So far PR has done the right thing by ignoring provocative attempts by the likes of UMNO extremists like Ahmad Ismail and Khir Toyo to start racial trouble to cause another May 13 or a repeat of Ops Lallang 1987. Continue to strengthen PR’s hold in the 5 states through good governance – show the people that PR is NOT all that is bad about the BN which everyone knows. Continue to get all the 3 PR components – PKR, DAP and PAS – to work together under a common PR umbrella. So far PAS and DAP seem to be doing the right thing in cooperating, with PAS commendably spoiling UMNO’s attempt to brand Theresa Kok as anti-Malay and anti-Islam to provoke racial tensions. But PKR seems to be having some problem regarding the temples issue in Selangor and alleged corruption in a housing deal which comes under ACA investigation.

Whatever you do, Anwar, please be reminded that UMNO/BN is always waiting in the wings to destroy you and PR. So don’t let go your guard while at the same time, continue to hit them when they are still preoccupied with their internal troubles.

The rakyat are convinced that UMNO/BN will never, like a leopard, change its spots, and their so-called reforms is nothing save to get rid of Pak Lah and make even more extreme their already divisive racial policies which the people of all races reject as in the 8 Mar general election and your landslide majority victory in the Permatang Pauh by-election on 26 Aug. Good luck and God bless.

IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT THEY STILL DISPLAY ARROGANT AND RACIST ATTITUDES WHEN WE KNOW THAT BN IS CRUMBLING BEFORE OUR EYES. BBC UK 23/10/2008
    “Malaysia blocks Iran Nobel winner”

A Malaysian university has cancelled a scheduled speech by the Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi.
Ms Ebadi, an outspoken human rights lawyer, had been due to speak at the University of Malaya early in November.
Foreign ministry officials admitted that they had advised the university to withdraw Ms Ebadi’s invitation.
Ms Ebadi, who won the peace prize in 2003, has often found herself at odds with the Iranian government over her human rights work.

    ‘Big implications’
Ms Ebadi had been due to deliver the speech entitled Islam and Cultural Diversity on 3 November.
But an official told the Associated Press news agency that the foreign ministry had sent a letter “strongly advising” the organisers not to go ahead with the speech.
“We were told there would be big implications for bilateral relations,” the unnamed official said, adding that Iranian diplomats were “pushing for Malaysia to call it off”.
The university’s vice-chancellor, Rafiah Salim, told the French news agency AFP that the decision was made “out of respect for our Iranian students, who were not very happy”.
The speech was supposed to begin a series of talks in Malaysia and Thailand over the next few months.
Other speakers include fellow Nobel laureate President Jose-Ramos Horta of East Timor and American activist Jesse Jackson.
In her capacity as a lawyer, Ms Ebadi has defended many people accused of political and security crimes in Iran, and campaigned for greater rights for women and children.
She has faced numerous death threats and hostility in the Iranian media, and the government banned her Centre for Protecting Human Rights in 2006.

This is another case of the Malaysian Government refusing to promote dialogue in handing human rights issues.

If this isn’t Ignorance and Oppression, I do not know what is….

Shame on you Malay Oppressors. What will it take for you to listen????

I guess that’s one of few things, if any, make myself and PR supporters the same as the govt supporters – fail to see what good or bad in our leaders or political parties. But as for me, I strongly believe what I believe and am won over by what I see in PR,. If that makes any sense then surely there’s no nonsense of me into believing that govt supporters have no sense at all after believing to the nonsense from the no-sense govt…

    Yb DSAI,
Selamat maju jaya!!!!!!!!!!!!

(maybe it was true that he really did not have the 30MPs) All of these were his empty talks.

When the PM defied him to prove the 30MPs, he cowed away by saying that the time was not appropriate. Full of craps nothing but craps. Why should he wait if he truly has the number, as I see no difference of taking over it now and later.
