Guan Eng: Anwar a threat only to BN

by Regina William

PENANG: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is a threat only to the Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s position, and not to all Malaysians, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Lim, who was asked to comment on Abdullah’s statement that Anwar was a threat to the nation’s security and economy, said Malaysians in general did not share Abdullah’s views.

“The people in Permatang Pauh did not think so, neither do other Malaysians. The only threat that Anwar poses is to Umno, BN and also Abdullah himself, and this should not be confused as a threat to the entire nation, including the democratic and political process in the country.

“Malaysia is not Umno/BN and Umno/BN is not Malaysia. It is wrong, incorrect and irresponsible of Abdullah to say so.

“I hope the ISA (Internal Security Act) threat is just a remark and not a prelude to a bigger operation which would affect the country,” he told reporters at the launch of the Penang Free WiFi project yesterday.

Lim also congratulated Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on his appointment as the finance minister. He said he would seek a meeting with Najib to foster a constructive and fruitful relationship between the state and federal government.

“I will seek to brief him on the situation in Penang and areas of cooperation where the federal government and state government can achieve a win-win situation.

“Even though we do not have a finance minister from Penang, we hope that Najib will prove that he will be fair to Penangites,” he added.

Lim said there were a few issues which would be brought up with Najib, given that Penangites paid taxes in excess of RM5 billion each year, and deserved a fair share of the nation’s wealth.

On SAPP’s withdrawal from BN, Lim said he hoped that more BN component parties including MCA and Gerakan would leave the coalition, especially after the latest ISA arrests.

“MCA and Gerakan keep opposing the ISA arrests outside, but within the cabinet they just shut up. They don’t practise what they preach and we can see who is sincere, like Datuk Zaid Ibrahim who quit as minister because of his steadfast principle against the ISA arrests. Let the people decide who has principles, when it matters,” he added.

to practise what they preach, you need to check if they need back supports.

Why does Guan Eng need to meet up with Najib to discuss Penang if he believes that the BN govt will shortly fall from power? I don’t see the rationale behind such a meeting. DSAI is already preparing the people for the take-over and Guan Eng still wants to meet up with Najib? Mmmmm!

    Pak Lah!

Even till today, I respect you, still. But if your hour has come, then it has come. Let this be your finest hour. Not your ugliest.

Pak Lah. Be the Mikhail Gorbachev of our beloved Malaysia!
    Not the Stalin of Malaysia.
Or worst of all, the Mahathir of Malaysia!

Go, in love and in peace, Mr Prime Minister.

Guan Eng, the other race-less politician, the one who went to jail for trying to defend the dignity of a Malay girl. These are the kind of politicians we need to run this country.

We need more leaders of one race to look after other races. This is real assimilation and a test of a true leader’s capabilities. What better way to reduce communal suspicions?

We don’t need tall buildings to tell the world we are developed. We can be the most developed multicultural country in the world.

Threat or not, depends which side of the fence one is sitting. For the moment,
as long as he is decent, able to do an excellent job dealing with the uncertainty
of the economic storm, has the talent to integrate all the races and promote
equality, deserves to be respected as a capable PM. All the rhetoric by the ruling
administration of accusing Anwar as a threat to the nation is just to gain political
mileage and hitting below the belt tactic. The rakyat is intelligent enough, let
them come with their own conclusion.

Everyone in Malaysia knows that DSAI is not a treat to National Security, and so is every bloggers, reporters, politicians and common citizens. We are all Malaysian and we love our country, if not then we should be thinking of migrating to another country. I truly agree with LGE about Malaysia is not UMNO/BN and UMNO/BN is not Malaysia. I think this statement applies to all political parties or organisation. I am 100% Malaysia is for Malaysians.Hopefully ISA will be abolish and should never be used against anyone… ever again.

It is very easy to generate Police Reports against DSAI by using Penang Mamak Umno’s 25 Members headed by Wan Abidin Zain, who claimed to be non-partisan, using their uneasiness that most Penangites will now be boycotting Nasi Kandar one more round???

It is very Sad that the legacy of Malaysian Independence is reduced by this Moronic Flip Flop Coward into great disrepute and a laughing stock of the whole world and knowing very well that the UMNO Government has technically collapsed and but he has decided to shamelessly still cling on to power via dubious means like hiding himself via using of the ISA and we cannot imagine that the Malaysia Moronic Flip Flop Coward has now stoop so low and using the Police Deputy IGP as his willing tools especially the Deputy IGP’s clearly taking side as the Police must be neutral and should be not politiking for him.

The Coward Moronic Flip Flop Chicken dare not meet DSAI face to face to settle matters but chose hiding under the use of ISA and that is what you have as a disgraceful cowardice leader for UMNO.

After 51 years MALAYSIA IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE but backwards because of the Oppression from the UMNO goons’ divide and rule fear tactics the Rakyats have matured & you must see all this coming because All The Rakyats of Malaysia are all fed-up & can no longer with-stand the hypocrisies, bullshits, lies and deceits of these UMNO Clowns now in Power ok???

We urge all BN Components MPs with a conscience to do the necessary to make possible a New Malaysia for all Rakyats of Malaysia so that all our children and their children & their children’s children’s future will be safe and secured in the Country we all love and not be intimidated by those UMNO Clowns now in power with their oppressive & fear tactics and in the verge of making Malaysia a Police State if left unchecked otherwise. Save RPK as he is the midst of a conspiracy of the real murderers of Altantuya to silence him for good, instead of being C4ed he could be poisoned and worse off if he is on hunger strike by himself. The Acting IGP is defending the Police position after being made the tools of UMNO’s fear tactics & so he is now making lame excuses for being the Stringed Puppet to be easily manipulated by the Puppeteer, power that be. The Deputy IGP must be held personally responsible for the safety of RPK who has been heard to be tortured otherwise he must be made to eat his own medicine come the New Dawn of Malaysia.

Moronic PeeM and Botak Home Minister last minutes’ attempts to cling on power by using the fear tactics of using the ISA at their whims and fancies selectively against dissent & tried to deny their own actions as they now have no balls to face the wrath of the all the Rakyats of Malaysia. ONE DAY THE MORONIC BOTAK AND FLIP FLOP AND C4 MUST BE MADE TO TASTE THEIR OWN MEDICINE OK?

All Rakyats of Malaysia will see to that these Clowns will be thrown out soon come the New Dawn of Malaysia & that all Rakyats of Malaysia will welcome the New Malaysia on Malaysia Day 916, 2008 for a Malaysia for All Malaysians.

Justice MUST BE DONE for Altantuya and for all those detained under ISA without the trial nor the rights of appeal. Light-up a Candle in the Lantern of the Mid-Autumn Festival for them all to usher in the NEW DAWN OF MALAYSIA COME 916, 2008 and then abolish ISA, OSA and whatever Acts that could be made prejudicial and oppressive to the voice of dissent from all the Rakyats.

US concerned over Malaysian use of internal security act
The government of US President George W. Bush views with “grave concern” Malaysia’s use of its tough Internal Security Act (ISA) as a possible way to stifle dissent, the State Department said Thursday.

Washington worries about “the possibility” that the act, which allows indefinite detention without trial, “might be used again to detain opposition political figures,” said spokesman Sean McCormack.

“The statement by a government figure that a leading member of the opposition had become ‘a threat to the economy and national security’ is extremely troubling,” said McCormack, referring to warnings by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who on Thursday called for a no-confidence vote against Abdullah.

Last Friday Malaysian police arrested Teresa Kok of the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP), Malaysia’s top blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, and a reporter with a Chinese-language newspaper under the security law, citing security concerns.

“The United States firmly believes that national security laws, such as the ISA, must not be used to curtail or inhibit the exercise of universal democratic liberties or the peaceful expression of political views,” McCormack said.

“The detention of opposition leaders under the ISA would be viewed by the United States and the international community as a fundamental infringement of democratic rights and values,” he added.

“Malaysia is not Umno/BN and Umno/BN is not Malaysia. It is wrong, incorrect and irresponsible of Abdullah to say so.”

Abdullah did not say that. If you put those two sentences together, you are putting words into Abdullah’s mouth.

Yes, UMNO/BN is not Malaysia and Malaysia is not UMNO/BN. I am sure Abdullah himself is aware of that.

He is carrying out his duties within the parameters of his head-of-state position. He is consulting his cabinet and advisors, and giving the consensual national view. As he should.

Anwar’s being a “national security threat” is the cabinet view. Abdullah was not speaking as UMNO’s leader but as Malaysia’s leader.

Until he steps down or resigns, he is still the PM. He should be allowed to make decisions and take action in his capacity as leader of the country. Whether we think his decisions are right or wrong. The fact is he was elected to office.

It is unfair of people to heckle him endlessly and hurl all sorts of verbal abuses at him. He is just doing his job.

I am beginning to feel sorry for him. Despite trying to plod on, he is constantly being attacked from all sides.

He has to deal with ministers drunk with power and addicted to corruption, his own political party putting his head on the block for its own ills and failings, the embarrassment of recalcitrant MPs stepping out of line, his former boss publicly and persistently blaming and shaming him, and an opposition leader wanting to unceremoniously finish him off.

‘The enemy’ is not Abdullah. Neither is it BN or even UMNO.

‘The enemy’ is certain executive members of UMNO. They are using Abdullah now to ensure they remain in control. They once used Mahathir and have now cast him aside to be totally ignored. They will do the same to Abdullah.

And then, you may have a leader worse than Abdullah and Mahathir combined.

    Shobhan Reply:

I don’t disagree in certain areas. Everything in life can be a gamble. But we the rakyat have no choice. We have to take risks. Like you said it may not entirely be the leader’s fault, yet at the end of the day the leader will have bear the cross. I’m sure DSAI knows it too. But we hope and pray for the best.

    hello singapura,

i am going to reply to you and after this, do not write here again as singapuras are not allowed into malaysian polital domain.

foremost, we must have good judgement and reasoning skills when making comments.
    why ?? because, firstly :

    i. Pak Lah was elected a Member of Parliament by the kepala batas residents and UMNO elected him the PM. Pak Lah was not elected to the Prime Minister post by the rakyat of malaysia. There is a big difference here. Did Pak Lah say he was going to be the PM if he wins the Kepala Batas post ? No, he didn’t. Therefore, we the rakyat have a right to want a replacement. However, DSAI did say he will go for the PM post if the Permatang Pauh residents voted him in. Therefore, we already knew from the start and that is a fair deal.

ii. Pak Lah believed that BN is Malaysia and vice versa, because he said DSAI is a threat to Malaysia, and BN is now in power. Thus, Guan Eng have to put Pak lah in place by reminding him that nobody owns malaysia except the rakyat.

iii. as a singapura, you can afford to feel sorry for pak lah because you have no stake in malaysia. we the rakyat have given him sufficient time to take action but alas, pak lah is not an action man and thus, if umno does not remove him, by the rakyat votes, we will do it.

iv. personally, i have never seen Pak lah as an enemy as you described him to be. He is a pleasant person but he is incapable of being the PM of malaysia. That’s just about it.

    v. neither do we see BN or UMNO as the enemy. BN and umno also wants peace and the betterment of malaysia. However, we prefer PK to run the country.

vi. as per item v above, it shows a person can really stir things up and brand pak lah and company as enemy. we the rakyat have no hatred for fellow malaysians, we are all one family. only different is we want PK to run the country. WA MERN IK CHIA REN …GET IT ?

If you look at the long term monetary and fiscal policies “planned” by Barisan Nasional, there are very few long term policies at all. Its very difficult to take this government, or alot of the parties in Malaysia seriously as they are too busy trying to cover up there mess!

There is a shared view, to reduce the poverty line, but this “line” could have been removed along time ago.. if it hadnt been for the subversion of funds to Malaysian ministers to keep their vote. The poverty line could have been removed if funds were diverted from mega projects such as Putra Jaya had not been created. Alot of mega projects, like the communists mentality have been created for Natioanl Pride and Propoganda, rather than one for “really” assisting the nations people….Its a question of priorities and logic.

This Governments priorities are for itself only. And logic? One look at KL’s road map and you will see how “planned” this place is…

In terms of economic strategy, Malaysia is heading down the wrong path. Its political strategy is race based, divided and disjointed. The internal power sharing has lead to disjointed and disabled approach at social and economic progression. There are internal struggles amongst the races that have hampered progression… there is infighting about how a particular race has more etcetera… This internal fighting and suspicion is destroying Malaysia’s competativeness with whom we should be competing with… that is Other Countries! Not people within the same nation… this focus Must Be Removed.

There are many ways to fight UMNO.

The most effective and deadly one is your enlightened vote!

    Is Malaysia Ready for Democracy?

Having been abroad for the all my life, talking with the French, Germans and even American academics and business people… one persistent point arises with regard to Malaysia and its so called democracy….

Malaysia being a “typical” muslim nation will never be as socially sophisticated as many industrialised nations unless there is a cultural shift in paridigm… which would be an Everest climb…

The main problems are religous insecurities. Should we say something bad about a particular race or religion, this is grounds for sedition in Malaysia.

If we were in Spain or Switzerland and codemned Jesus and worship the devil. If we were to critisize the government openly… these protests would be ignored and laughed at.

Why? Its because of social progress… social maturity.

Malaysia still is not at that level of sophistication.

A blurb about the most simplest things ie” the call to prayer” can incite such a wave of protest and violence… vey similar to Iranian and Pakistani reactions….

The Malaysian nation can not show maturity by walking away and ignoring silly comments….furthermore, the police force incompetent as they are would not be able to manage such violent reactions…

For a nation to be truly democratic, its people need sound minds, sound judgement and social maturuty, to be able to make fair decisions as to whether a particular comment is true or false.

Will Malaysia be as sophisticated as Mahatir’s dream nation Japan? I don’t think so….

You are very right, Guan Eng. Anwar is always a threat to BN only. Malaysia is not BN and BN is not malaysia. A very good statement. Eventhough MCA and Gerakan keep saying that ISA detention on MP Teresa Kok and RPK and chinese Journalist are not rite but no action and keep quite. No point asking them out because they wont do it. Say no action. they will still continue to be partner with BN. Zaid ibrahim has more guts to do it. he is real gentleman. Hope political issue can be solve asap.

The statement Pak Lah made to say that Anwar is a threat to the nation has no basis and we fear it is just to ‘justify’ his next action, which is to shut Anwar up by putting him under ISA.

Anwar is NOT a threat, instead he is the new hope. As this article has brilliantly point out, Anwar only posses danger to BN/UMNO and those who are against justice and democracy. All that has been happening in the country, with the horrible economy, the corruptions, the ISA, the slowdown on investment… these are all due to Pak Lah incompetance as PM.

Pak Lah is still in a state of denial. He refuses to accept the responsibility for the worst ever showing for BN in the recent general election. He refuses to accept that all that have been happening is his own fault as PM. Deep down, he knows he’s guilty. His own comrates are asking him to step down. His predecessor, Mahathir, have asked him to step down. Even the world leaders have asked him to step down……….. You had your chance, Pak Lah and you blew it!!

Move aside and let the wind of change takes it’s course.

According to the Westminster model of Parliamentary Democracy, UMNO is not Malaysia and Malaysia is not UMNO either. UMNO the dominant partner in BN, is no more than a political party which is now the ruling political party of the day, while PR coalition is the opposition. A new mandate must be sought from the voters through a fair election in a fixed time period, i.e., five years in the case of Malaysia.
