Malaysia: Abdullah Survives, But For How Long?

From STRATFOR.com

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Sept. 17 yielded his position as finance minister to his deputy, Najib Razak (in exchange for the latter’s post as defense minister), and said for the first time that he might leave office before his previously set date of June 2010. The same day, the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) became the first to defect from Abdullah’s 14-party Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition government.

Both developments came shortly after news emerged that former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is planning to rejoin the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) in order to continue his bid to oust Abdullah from it.

External and internal pressures on Abdullah to step down have finally come to a head, and his days as UMNO leader and prime minister are numbered.

Although the SAPP’s defection was expected and the party held only two of BN’s 140 seats in parliament, fears that its official defection could trigger others are valid , as most of the challenges Abdullah faces come from one source: his rival and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar made it his mission to topple Abdullah  from power by Sept. 16 — the 45th anniversary of Malaysia’s founding — first by exploiting and widening rifts inside the UMNO, and second by luring at least 30 BN parliament members to join the opposition alliance (led by his Parti Keadilan Rakyat) that already commands 82 of the Malaysian parliament’s 222 seats.

Although the deadline has passed and the 31 defections that Anwar claims to have secured remain unconfirmed, these details are peripheral to the core strategy Anwar has used against the ruling party for months. Anwar said the delay occurred because Abdullah refused to meet with him in person to secure a guarantee for the personal safety of would-be defectors after their names are announced.

By using a clever mix of public relations tactics, promises of better governance (such as the scrapping of the pro-ethnic Malay discrimination policies) and political persuasion, Anwar has sown increasing distrust and disorientation inside the ruling coalition leadership — effectively freezing any attempts at efficient governance. This strategy was further boosted Aug. 26, when elections in Permatang Pauh in Anwar’s home state of Penang gave him his parliamentary seat again. As Stratfor predicted then , based within parliament, Anwar would gain greater leverage and opportunities to step up the intensity and frequency of his courtship of would-be defectors from BN.

Abdullah may have survived Sept. 16, but the uncertainty felt by his closest political allies, his continued failure to consolidate and motivate his own party, his firefighting rather than pre-emptive responses to the opposition’s provocations and his inability to take his eye off political survival long enough to lead the country from its worsening economic outlook have led even key members of the UMNO leadership in recent days to openly start questioning his reluctance to step down.

Among those questioning Abdullah are Zaid Ibrahim, former minister responsible for judicial and legal reform (who resigned Sept. 15 in protest against the use of the internal security act against members of the opposition), Abdullah’s second-in-command, Najib, and the UMNO Vice President and International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin — all of whom had, in July, backed Abdullah’s plans to leave in mid-2010.

The surrender of Abdullah’s finance portfolio (a key portfolio in Malaysian policymaking) is likely a compromise struck with his UMNO colleagues, designed to eventually give the him a graceful exit, and to give Najib a chance to prove to the UMNO his ability to lead competently (in spite of his less-than-stellar reputation, including alleged misuse of Defense Ministry funds and the alleged murder of a 28-year-old Mongolian).

By accelerating the leadership transition process, the UMNO is likely hoping to shield its leadership from Mahathir’s inevitable attacks against Abdullah and thus prevent further defections from the BN coalition. Whether this defensive strategy works remains to be seen. But regardless of the outcome, rising political heat and uncertainty in Kuala Lumpur is nearly guaranteed for the next month ahead.

    Slm…

    My Dear Malaysians…

Deep down inside, i can sense something big is looming…

Sadly, i still don’t know what it is…

Is DSAI going to be arrested today?

For Pak Lah has clearly lost his mind in this game…he already made it abundantly clear, HE AIN’T GONNA STEP DOWN! And he’s going to fight it all the way…

Rumours about the military being put in high alert worries me A LOT…

I don’t want to witness another repeat of 20 Sept 1998…

I fear for the future of our beloved Malaysia…

I implore all of you to offer a prayer for our country…

    By God’s Grace, we’ll make it….

    InsyaAllah…

Dear DSAI…the journey ahead of you will surely be a tumultuous one…

For that I wish you God Speed…

During Islam’s holiest month of Ramadan when Muslims are fasting, patience is more than just a virtue. The majority Malaysian Muslim population can still wait and see what will be the final outcome of this continuing ‘Real-politik’ saga and ‘batttle royale’ between (outgoing?) Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and former Deputy (next?) Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim in the weeks ahead.

Will the Pakatan Rakyat (People Solidarity) leaders celebrate the Muslim festivity of Eid-ul-Fitr or locally known in Malay as Hari Raya Aidil Fitri with a BIG BANG i.e. by ousting the current UMNO-led Barisan National (National Front) government? Only God the Almighty, the Most Knowing knows! The Most Powerful Lord of the Universe can always make it happen overnight (even this second!) because Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim can only plan and strategize but at the end of the day God decides!

Regards to the power transition between Paklah n Najis,I nampak ada 4 incident,
1.As Defence Minister, Senang paklah nak declare state of emergency, when he feels un safe.
2.Nak halang Najis dari declare State of emergency in a hurry.
3.Compromise dengan Najis nak cari duit as Finance minister so tak presure Paklah as PM.
4.The best of all is “Senang Paklah nak join you n Najis tak boleh kacau”.
Saya doakan jadi yang No4 diatas.Jadi tak payah ada kacau bilau.

Walau apa pun, jentera parti yang second n third liner harus bersedia galas tugas kalau operasi lalang kedua terjadi. Kita harus set sekarang nak buat macam mana, takut nanti line talipon semua kena sekat susah buat kerja. SELAMAT BERJAYA, WASSALAM.

Awas DSAI, mungkin Pak Lah nak kerah askar/polis untuk menangkap DSAI..kononnya DSAI membuat huru-hara..

Uncomfortable with abstract philosophical concepts, he would often say to me that an issue “was not a question of principle; it was a question of tactics.” He is a master tactician.”

What is the big deal in Swapping the Portfolio from a corrupted incompetent Flip Flop to another corrupted incompetent C4 cheats as tyro Finance Minister, do you think there could be any improvement to the lives of Malaysians, could there be any relief to the hardships suffered by the people of Malaysia with this swap??? Bukan sekadar omong-omong kosong. =)

The PM’s cunning move to exchange portfolio with his Deputy will at least enable him to survive for another few months…enough to enable his son-in-law to win in the coming UMNO Youth election.
Many of us were not only disappointed but a bit depressed that the new dawn did not arise as widely expected. However, we are all looking forward for the opposition to continue to strengthen in the months to come.Eventually the change will come about!

Does DSAI really have enough numbers of MPS to form a new government? Is this a psychological warfare used by DSAI to topple BN? DSAI should show the proof to convince the rakyat who want him to form a new government. Mere say and no action will cause the rakyat to get fed up with DSAI’s empty talk without proof and lose confidence in DSAI. If DSAI is scared that PM will use ISA to detain the would be crossover MPs to sabotage his plan, he is advised to submit the proof(the list of the names of MPs) to the king to let His Majesty know these names before PM can use ISA to detain these MPs. We the rakyat want a new government (clean, competent, trustworthy, good governance as promised by DSAI) as soon as possible.

ABdullah is facing a lot more problems. The economy of the nation is not in his favour. The high cost of living now is making people angry. Inflation is high. People are jobless. Investment is dwindling. Najib has his own skeletons in the cupboard. Within UMNO, Abdullah has enemies. Mahathir is pushing him to go. Other BN component parties are not in favour of UMNO and his leadership. Corruption and judiciary reformation are still haunting Abdullah. People have lost trust in the police, the judiciary and the ACA. Zaid’s resignation is a big blow to him. SAPP’s leaving BN is like adding salt to injury. The ISA detention of a journalist and two others just recently is a clear sign of desperation on UMNO’s part. The people – from both camps – are not happy with this move. It backfired. Last and not least, is the Anwar factor. By aaying that Anwar is a threat to the nation also does not go well with most Malaysians. Anwar is a maverick leader who can bring progress to this country but UMNO prefers to put him down. Only Anwar can save the country now, not Abdullah or Najib. if the interest of all people is our concern give Anwar a chance and that is what the people want. Why fear Anwar? If Anwar is the factor that undermines the economy now, then call for a general election and let the people decide once and for all. The people on the ground now wants a two-party system as they feel that this would give them a better deal. After 51 years of BN rule, the people feel that they want a change. BN should respect the people’s wish. UMNO should stop putting the blame on Anwar. Blame themselves for all the blunders they have created thus far that have made them unpopular.

Aku rasa Pak Lah akan terus kekal memerintah. Omongan kosong PR selepas 1609 tak kan laku lagi dah basi dah.

    Dear DSAI and PAKATAN LEADERS,

The way things are going now, those disgusting UMNO BN may invoke the ISA on you and the rest of pakatan MP’s.
Frankly we are waiting anxiously for you to pull the trigger. Please takecare of yourself and i am sure you can anticipate the move that will be made by BE END/UMNO.
I am also concern about a rift in PAS between Mustafa Ali and Tok Guru Nik Aziz.
Please DSAI, malay, chineese, indian, iban, kadazan and etc are banking our hopes on you.
Go for the final push and pull the trigger.
The KING will be our final hope and we hope he will not disappoint us.

    LONG LIVE DSAI & FAMILY,

    I was wrong.

Mr Abdullah Badawi is not the person of strong character I had given him credit for. The unwarranted and unjustififed application of the ISA on patriotic Malaysians is probably the straw that broke the camel’s back of skepticism about Mr Abdullah Badawi being a strong decent man. Do you realise what it is like to be abused under ISA detention? May God have mercy on your soul.

Mr Badawi, I know essentially you are a good man but you should not have listened or give in to those crooks and bast**ds in UMNO. Men like Ahmad Ismail and Khr Toyo and those who support them. You should have thrown the spanner and kitchen sink at them. As Prime Minister and President of UMN, you set the tone in terms of values and principles. Not them. What can they do if they are out of UMNO? Nothing! So if you lead, you lead. They are not the leaders. They can be let go. It does not matter. Now instead, you may have to pay the price.

Whatever, I now ask you to do the decent thing. Please uphold democracy and let the transition of power take place smoothly if Mr Anwar Ibrahim has the majority. For the sake of Malaysia.

UMNO is just a political party. It can be rebuilt again to win the next elections. It is not the end of the world. Your decision and action will decide which direction Malaysia will go. As a civilised matured democracy or an uncivilsed third world power hungry totalitarian country.

WHat you decide now, will be your legacy.

If you are still capable of it, be strong, be good. And your greatness will be assured.

    Assmkum Sdr Anwar,

Pak lah will not quit from his post. He has too many things to clean up before he quit. He sign too many approve projects. IF he quits, all project in malaysia will stop, and many contractors will look for him for full payment debt if he resign and not fullfilling the signed, approved projects. So now you know his situation. All the projects he approve all got “kang tau”.

Actually Pak Lah is not totally to blame for the current climax. I’ve said this before and I still say it now. He should have kept up with the times. How could he when most of the time he is not aware of what’s going on inside his cabinet. He has crafty deputies and ministers all eyeing for material gains at the expense of the public at large. When faced with the present political climate he and his ‘faithful’ UMNO members like SHA, Najib etc.. are making it more messy and complicated for Pak Lah who has woven an intricate web around himself! What to do, poor Pak Lah! Hope he does not mess further by imposing the ISA or any other outmoded forms of captivity on DSAI. If this happens Pak Lah’s exit from head of govt will be the most humiliating!

Whoever is holding PM position is held responsible, even he or she doesn’t know what is happening. Being a PM, he knows all current situation. He’s just playing politics. He is aware of all things in his cabinet. When PM is in power, you need power to control. Money is the only instrument. Well try and guess who is making all the decision of the country? Try and think who prepare all the decisions. Making decision needs great exposure in international politics but current PM lack of english ability and exposure. Who do all the decisions now? U know the answer yourself. Pak Lah is only suitable to be the Minister of “religious”- of there is such a job position.

    salam sume.
party nasional dah terlalu lame memerintah.
,ereka selalu mengatakan rakyat marah, rakyat nak DSAI berhenti, rakyat sokong paklah,
sedangkan perkataan rakyat harus diganti ngn barisan.
to me, DSAI tidak menimbulkan huru hara kepada rakyat. juz kepada barisan.
ini yg barisan perlukan. agar mereka berase unsecure, so dat they will do better for rakyat, to gain rakyat trust back.
rakyat malaysia skrg sudah tuka pandangn. usah barisan teruskan lg ngn laungan mereka membawa kemajuan. rakyat mahukan pemerintahan yg ADIL dan TELUS lebih dr kemajuan.
    salam~
