Anwar to take oath as Malaysian MP

Al Jazeera.net

Malaysia’s opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, is set to be sworn in as a member of parliament two days after a landslide by-election win marked his return to mainstream politics.

Anwar, a member of the Keadilan (Justice) party, won a decisive victory on Tuesday in a contest for Permatang Pauh, a constituency in his northern home state of Penang.

Pandikar Amin Mulia, the speaker of Malaysia’s lower house of parliament, said Anwar will be formally sworn in as legislator on Thursday.

This will allow Anwar, a former deputy prime minister and finance minister, to attend the tabling of the annual budget in parliament on Friday by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysia’s prime minister.

His return to mainstream politics after a decade is expected to boost the opposition voice in parliament led by a loose coalition known as Pakatan Rakyat, or People’s Alliance.

Morale booster

“We will all be there to welcome Anwar as the leader of the opposition and the parliament will be very different with his voice,” Tian Chua, Keadilan’s information chief, told AFP on Wednesday.

“It is a real morale boost for the Pakatan Rakyat in parliament.”

Anwar’s landslide victory on Tuesday will not tip the balance of national power but he has vowed to topple the government and become the next prime minister with a promise for change.

He claims there are enough MPs from the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition who are wiling to join him to form a new government by mid-September.

He needs the support of 30 defectors to make this happen.

Last month Anwar’s wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also Keadilan president, resigned from the Permatang Pauh seat to make way for him to contest.

Sodomy charge

Anwar’s convincing win comes despite a new charge of sexual misconduct for allegedly sodomising a male aide early this year.

He says the charges are part of a politically-motivated smear campaign by the government.

Under Malaysian law, sodomy is illegal even if consensual, and a conviction could see Anwar jailed for up to 20 years.

Anwar is scheduled to appear in court on September 10 to deny charges of sexual misconduct, which he says is a government conspiracy similar to that mounted against him 10 years ago.

In 1998 Anwar was charged with sodomy and corruption which led to his sacking from government and political office.

He was later convicted on both charges and served six years in jail before the sodomy conviction was overturned in 2004. The conviction for corruption remains.

Anwar has maintained that Mahathir Mohamad, the former Malaysian prime minister who was his long-time mentor, had framed him in 1998 to prevent a power struggle.

As an ordinary Malaysian, I would say this to the fence sitting UMNO/BN lawmakers. The time is now to JUMP to Pakatan Rakyat. It’s time to change as Malaysia do not have the luxury of another 4 long years. 4 years is a long time for raping and plundering the country’s resources by those racist UMNO guys in power. As far as I am concerned, UMNO have shown their true colors in the PP by-election. “WANKING themselves in public for the whole world to see”

It’s time to serve the RAKYAT, afterall, this is what you are asking for when you seek election to hold public office. No 2 ways about that and as a citizen, I DEMAND this from all elected reps, irrespective of colors, race, religion or creed. Period.

Congrat!!! Permatang Pauh by-election is the victory of Anwar, PR and all the people. However, it definitely became BN’s BYE-election after 51-year rule of our country. Wondering how well are thier mood our BN fellows in celebrating this National Day on Sunday. What words will he says when Badawi delivers his National Day speech? Anyway, I wish to dedicate a song to him and our BN fellows - Mariah Carey’s “BYE BYE”. Wish all the best to you lah…BN

Now the second stage is to take over Putrajaya and bring the Nation back to it’s former glory without the cronies and bigots who stole the public’s money and buy ranches and property overseas so that they can run away and stay there when Malaysia is in ruins.

Dear DSAI,,,,we believed in you 10 years ago and we believe in you ‘more’ now. You have shown true guts mirroring individuals that fought for truth and justice years before you, such as the great Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi etc.
We have prayed to Allah daily asking his protection for you and your victory in PmtgPauh. We will pray intensely more..asking that your path to Putrajaya is a ‘guarded path’ and a new Malaysia will be re-born…takbir!!!

    Assalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb.

    Brother Anwar

    Salam dari Singapura

    Orang-orang Munafik berkata “Kami dipihak yg benar dan Allah memberkati kami” apabila mereka beroleh kejayaan;

Pejuang Mujahiddin tetap meneruskan perjuangan apabila usaha mereka sentiasa mendapat tentangan dan seringkali tewas, walaupun berada di pihak yang benar- ‘lIHAT LAH MEREKA TIDAK AKAN MENANG KERANA BUKAN DARI GOLONGAN YG BENAR

Di permatang pauh, kebenaran dan kepalsuan bukan perkara penting yg pasti “lawan tetap lawan” .

Albert Einstein pun mengakui jatuh cinta dgn kebenaran Islam tetapi tiada “jodoh”…

Even with all the BN/UMNO crap and stupid accusations thrown at Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, he still managed to win the Permatang Pauh by-election convincingly with larger majority polled during the General Election in March 2008. That’s what I call “People’s Power”. Well done and congratulations!!!

If the by-election had been fair, we would have seen a much bigger majority that would be even more shocking to the BN/UMNO. But for now, the shock is already good enough.

May God continue to bless you and guide you everyday.

    Br. Datuk Seri Anuar Ibrahim,

    Assalamu-alaikum!

Everyday I prayed for you and some days I cried in my prayers realizing the fact that, what an agony you and your family had to put up with and go through! Today we share this prayer with all those Malaysians who believed in you and took-up the struggle…Allah (swt) is there and He was watching all of us, putting us all through that struggle and finally giving all of us the victory that was inevitable, for all those believers! Allah Amin!

Great tasks are ahead and I like to call my brother Anuar Ibrahim to get rid of the DATUK SERI in front of your name, we simply like to call you our Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. That will make us all equal in the eyes of God. We shall be more comfortable with that. Then you are more one of us than ever before, simply Br. Anuar. I pray to God for your long life and happiness. I pray for your wife and children for the joy that they deserve leaving behind all those ugly black days; but it made you stronger tham ever and more durable! God is great!

I am from Bangladesh. I was working with Malaysia Airlines as an Engineer. I wrote you letters while you were in jail. I preserved the reply I received from you from the jail. Itis a valuable treasure to you.

I wrote to you about my slave brothers in Malaysia, who are working as cheap foreign labours; I humbly pray to you my dearest brother and inshallah the PM of Malaysia that, please make it easy for my countrymen, so that they are not exploited. Bring revolutionery changes with in your immigration department, so that my countrymen do not suffer anymore and those corrupted agents on both sides are punished.

I took Bangladesh High Commissioner (Masood Aziz)in Malaysia to your High Court. I did not get the justice from the court. I do not regret the sufferings. What I regret is that how WISMA PUTRA played it’s part, which ultimately cost my job with Malaysia Airlines.

Dato Seri Abu Hosain Sulaiman’s drug addict son KHALIL was married to my cousin; I saw suffering of my sister in the hand of those powerful people and the jutice system including your SARIAH COURT…these are places where you need massive reform. Allah Amin.

Malaysian Police picked me from the office, remanded me for three hours, questioned, our house was raided, my family members were theomatized, rooms were searched, computers were consficated & never returned. This is how they treated me as a foreigner, I fought back and ultimately lost my job.

I loved Malaysia Airlines, I use to work just like as if it is my own country. I loved everyone that I worked with. I am greatful to all of them. Malaysian are great people, its a great country, it has all the resources in the world. Today morality is gone! yes, Malaysia is developed today then ever. But we want to see those Malaysian morally rich, ready to lead the Ummah.

Time has come. I see my leader today whom I shall follow tomorrow. Shaiykh Imran Hosein wrote a book ONE UMMAH1 ONE IMAM. Br. Anuar…you are my IMAM. ALLAH Amin!

While I sympathise your harsh experience here, I think we Malaysian morality is not up to a Bangladeshi to judge. I think morality here is much better than that in Bangladesh though. Besides, its subjective when we talk about morality.

    Shobhan Reply:

We are living in a globalised world where our actions are not just judged by those within the country, but by outsiders as well, be it Bengaladeshi or Arab or American etc… This is where human dignity and hospitality is actually assessed. We have countries that have fought on the basis of humanitarian grounds where injustices and atrocities have been committed even on foreigners. So I feel Mr Sheikh Monirul Islam is only voicing his grivances on the treatment he got when he was in Malaysia working for MAS. He has a right to express his side of the story.

    Shobhan Reply:

Sorry to hear of your plight and I can understand your trauma. Anyway, we hope for a new dawn and that Malaysia will wake up from her slumber to realise our dreams of a fair and just system of governance without fear or favour. We Malaysians are looking forth to a new era where race and religion are not used against us, to partition us and divide us. We hope for a clean judiciary clear of political manipulation and a civil service free of corruption and favouritism.

    hanafi bin jamil Reply:

Please come back again to Malaysia when Brother Anwar is the Prime Minister.
You shown us the quality of a Muslim brother which I knew all people from your region and Arab, among muslim they are really close. Here in Malaysia the quality of a good brotherhood of muslim is really low, the feel like brotherhood only when you are in PEKIDA.

Dato’ Seri, congratulations to your victory, the RAKYAT’S VICTORY. The people demanded change and now is the time for you to walk the talk. This country needs tremendous changes due to the idiotic ways the bn coalition has been running our country for the last 50 years. They rule this country at their whims and fancies. They are dragging the country nearer to be like the Philipines and Indonesia. PR must help to stop it. If I can speak on behalf of all the Rakyat, I wish that these two points are taken into consideration, transparency and “equality”. We are all Malaysians. Long Live MALAYSIA!

    Brother Anwar,

Many congratulations! Despite all the political propaganda and gimmicks from the ruling party, your party came out as a clear winner. On Friday, you will be able to face those who form part of the team who have fabricated evidences against you. It will be interesting to see if they will dare to even look at you when you speak. Imagine, 10 years later, you are back to give them hell.

The nation cannot wait what is it for them come mid-September. Everyone, without doubt looks forward for the petrol and diesel price to go down.

  65. 65 Irwan Loh Aug 27th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

    Dear Dato Seri,
I am Irwan from Singapore, I have been following your plight with great concerns and now am really relieved that you won.
I know we across the border should not take sides in Malaysian Politics, but I write in my own capacity as a human, a Chinese Muslim convert, and also, with genuine concerns and well wishes that you indeed will go and and mark a new era in the politics of Malaysia.
Please note I write entirely in my own capacity, I am currently in Mindanao, Philippines, but I do have lengthy discussions with my daughter who is in the NUS about your new political direction.
I do have some fear, knowing what had happened to you before, and that you will be subjected to more than that you had been subjected to in the past.
I pray, that truth will prevail and the righteous will triumph, I know it is cliche, guess by now you have heard them in the numbers that probably will numb you.
That aside, judging from the attempts to derail your political direction, I would really hope you take good care of yourself, and that Malaysians will really benefit from your political directions.
Singaporeans and Malaysians are people connected, even inter states have its rivalry let alone our distinctions, but, that said, we are concerned about Malaysia, more so about the political climate you are in.
I am glad you are back in the political arena again, lead the people, and show that Malaysians’ potential like that never had before.
    Insya Allah, you will succeed!

  66. 66 James Aug 27th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

DSAI is the only person in our Beloved Country who have the qualities to stop this country from going down the road to destruction. His voice is the only one pleading for Unity among all our Malay, Chinese, Indian, Kadasan & Iban brothers and sisters.
All the trials and tribulations DSAI went thru’ made him see the evils of the system. Only a man who have been personally impacted by an evil system will have the will to change it. His spirit is strong and his will unweavering and he will surely need them in the days ahead.
For the first time in 51 years, I see HOPE for this country, especially when in the USA, a black man may finally become her President.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” qoute Martin Luther King,Jr.
“I have a dream today that my children will live in a nation where they will not be called ‘bangsa asing’ or ‘babi’ but will be PROUDLY called MALAYSIAN.” quote James.
On 28th August 1963 (coincidentally exactly 45 years ago from tomorrow i.e. 28th August 2008 when DSAI will be sworned into Parliment) , Martin Luther King made his famous ” I have a dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.

Lakhnat yg dia minta lakhnat yg dia terima.Bersedialah wahai orang2 yg zalim dan penabur fitnah.Sesungguhnya seksaan Allah amatlah perit.Didunia lagi kamu akan dibayar”Cash”.Tungguuuu…

    Struggle to Topple BN!!!

  73. 73 Abdullah Aug 27th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

    Assmkum Sdr. Anwar,

    Wassalam.

  74. 74 Shobhan Aug 27th, 2008 at 11:09 pm

When we walk and talk among great men, we learn from them and their experience, thus we become a part of them. Likewise, when we move among small men, we think and act like them. It is for us to decide with whom we wish to walk and talk. From what I have seen so far, BN only walked and talked with small men, thus depriving themselves the chance to learn and grow wiser. Grow up BN!!! Learn to accept facts. You have a great ego which you need to shed for your benefit and the fate of the rest.

  75. 75 Dr Chantheney Aug 27th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

    Dear Dato Seri

As your step into Parliament tomorrow, remember that you walk the path of hope, peace, love and victory for all Malaysians. We cried when you did and today we laugh as you shed tears of utmost joy. The true Malaysian spirit burns as bright as ever and it is this spirit that unites us irrespective of race, religion or creed. We are but one race; the unique Malaysian race and in you we place our innermost trust and faith, for you are the CHOSEN ONE who is set to rule our beloved country and once again put us in the world map, as you propel Malaysia to its highest glory. Well done Dato Seri! Our heartfelt wishes and prayers will see you through. To the next Prime Minister of Malaysia. God bless you!!!

  80. 80 Sarawak Aug 28th, 2008 at 12:26 am

    Dear Dato Seri,

We over here in Sarawak is waiting for this moment to come. The people of Sarawak welcome you as our country’s new leader. A true leader that had learnt the meaning of colour blind. Sarawak’s CM is not doing his job in helping the people of Sarawak. The news about how the Federal and State government is helping the people in Sarawak are all fake. These type of leaders don’t simply help people for nothing. All the projects were monopolized by CM’s related people and relatives. When two monkeys are stealing rambutan in the jungle, the BPR immediately take action without questioning for the truth, but when the CM’sss related peoplesss are involved in corruption, BPR keep quiet only. Why? I think they got (i) no balls (ii) scared of CM sepirited away bodyguard (iii) stop by PM. And also I wonder where is this so called Chinese representative Georgy Chang, the rubbish bin and also the previous PM’s favurite chinese contractor, Tin Peki Kyng, the owner of the Globil Online Sdn Bhd. We must bring these people to justice. Here, I want to call for all Sarawakian to wake up(Especially the Bidayuh and Iban)because the time had come for a New Malaysia in general and a New Sarawak. God Bless You.

WE,THESE PEOPLE,NOW LOOK UPON YOU FOR YOUR GOOD LEADERSHIP.IF NOT ALL,3/4 OF THE MALAYSIAN PEOPLE AWAITS TO WELCOME YOU INTO PUTRA JAYA,WE WANT YOU TO TAKE THE SEAT YOU TRULY DESERVED THAT WAS ROBBED FROM YOU 10YRS. AGO.

    Well done and congratulation!

  83. 83 PJboy Aug 28th, 2008 at 3:35 am

Let’s hope BN will now focus on running the country as they should & not drive it down the drain. What is worrying is that the government will now sabotage everything in order to leave an empty nest for new government. That is, make life more difficult. It is unimaginable what sort of dirty tactics BN-UMNO-Baru will resort to.

    Hi DSAI,

Dr. M kata Dato Seri “could convince even the devil to follow him”; jadi nanti masuk Parlimen Dato Seri gunakan keistimewaan ni untuk memujuk dan meyakinkan orang-orang BN tu tentang perjuangan reformasi kita.

All the best!

  88. 88 orangkuale Aug 28th, 2008 at 11:30 am

    Dear DSAI,
MP of Sabah still believe that KULI can help resolve their leadership issues. They still think that KULI is still relevant. They might hold until December for KULI’s turn to head UMNO.I don’t understand why an educated and experienced man like KULI still talking about “Ketuanan Melayu”.Hope that KULI will head UMNO(an opposition party by end 2008).
    Cheers

    Dear Mr. msiajoe,

    You missed the point, Sir.
No where in my write-up I tried to judge morality of either side…it will be wrong to do so. In Bangladesh things are even worse and our sufferings are beyond comprehensible magnitude. I want you to pray for us and help us in every possible way. We are a very poor country and corruption..we are number one in the world. That is our shame.
I look forward to more close bilateral relation between the two countries when Br. Anwar becomes PM…please try to understand our agony, we need help from Malaysia in every possible way.
I beg your pardon if in any possible way I hurt your feeling, my apology.

    Write to me please………..
