Anwar fights to preserve image as agent of all races

By Carolyn Hong, Malaysia Bureau Chief

From Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR – OPPOSITION leader Anwar Ibrahim chose a significant theme to speak about at a rally which he used to launch his campaign to return to Parliament.

‘Yes, I am a Malay agent, I am a Chinese agent, I am an Indian agent, and I am an agent of the people,’ he told the cheering thousands who gathered at the rally in Penang on Sunday.

It was a clever message, and to Datuk Seri Anwar’s credit, also a consistent one. Over the last few years, he has been honing his image as a multiracial leader of Malaysia.

Observers were stunned to see how he won over the normally-reticent rural Chinese voters during a by-election last year in a predominantly Chinese constituency in Malacca.

At his rallies, the Chinese voters chanted his name ‘Anwar, Anwar’ as if he was a superstar. He won their hearts with his pledge to scrap the controversial policy that favours the Malays in economic and education opportunities.

The opposition candidate lost in that by-election, but Mr Anwar won.

He cemented this image when his Parti Keadilan Rakyat fielded a mixed slate of candidates for the March 8 polls, and championed Ketuanan Rakyat (People’s Supremacy) to counter the Malay Supremacy slogan favoured by Umno.

He will be fighting hard to preserve his newly crafted vision of multiracialism as he heads into a by-election in his old Permatang Pauh seat in Penang.

The seat became vacant after his wife Wan Azizah Ismail stepped down last week, forcing the government to hold a by-election.

Most analysts predict an easy win for Mr Anwar, but a top editor in the influential New Straits Times daily, Datuk Syed Nadzri Harun, wrote that there will be some challenges, among them on the race front.

He noted that the Democratic Action Party (DAP)-led Penang government had made policy changes that may not have gone down well with voters.

He did not elaborate, but it is no secret that there have been attempts to paint the Chinese-based DAP as dismantling pro-Malay policies.

‘Barisan Nasional is expected to capitalise on this to the core, putting Anwar on the defensive,’ Mr Syed Nadzri wrote.

Further, Umno could field a respected religious figure, he noted. This would bring the latent Islamic issues to the fore, making it harder for Mr Anwar to stay on the safe middle ground.

Mr Liew Chin Tong, a DAP MP from Penang, said a recent survey showed growing non-Malay support for the opposition Pakatan Rakyat alliance, but did not disclose who commissioned the poll.

‘It’s even stronger than before March 8,’ he said.

A news portal, Malaysian Insider, yesterday also carried results of a recent survey that covered more than 3,000 respondents, but did not disclose who commissioned it.

According to its data, over 31 per cent of those polled said their view of the opposition had remained the same since March 8 while 36.7 per cent said it had improved. Only 22 per cent of respondents had a negative view.

Most of the positive responses came from the Chinese and Indians, while the Malays were a little more ambivalent.

In the light of the racially demarcated support for him, Mr Anwar will have to work hard to maintain his multiracial platform – a legacy that he is trying to carve out for himself.

It would go a long way towards dispelling his longstanding image as an Islamic radical, a reputation earned in his student days and early years in government.

Whats your action against your MP Zulkifli? He has hurt the feelings of certain sections of society. If you are truly a Malaysian agent you should reprimand him

We all must embrace this change for our future generations despite come what may in the interest of the betterment of all mankind.

DSAI, I have openly supported you. My group of friends have openly declaring support for PR.

In recent times I’ve been following your speeches on your blog. I truly believe you are innocent including 1998 case. I have seen you changed according to times. At the height of your political career before 1998, you came to Berapit badminton hall and there were many Chinese folks so endeared to you. You spoke a couple words in Mandarin to please them, they were all in awe. That was the first time I came so close to you.

I thought perhaps it was just a political gimmick to win the voters’ hearts or support. I saw no difference in you with the rest of your then party members or colleagues. OK, you didn’t see it coming, the truth was out there all that time. Your very mentor (alphabet M) “stabbed” you almost to death. I held the belief that you were innocent still, while respecting our then PM that much.

Today, you speak like a true leader to all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion. You have hard-earned a lot of Chinese support. In the coming by-election you will get my vote and 2 others from my family, equal 3 votes – in the bag!

I just have one wish – STICK TO YOUR PROMISES, BE THE AGENT TO ALL MALAYSIANS. I hope you will be a Malaysian Prime Minister!

So what does it mean when one becomes the agent for all races? Doesnt it sounds like Malaysia-Malaysian? Of course it doesnt sound like America for Americans! Or does it? But the most important thing is : does this ‘change’ could really replace the present values that Malaysia have had? And of course, how will the Malays reacted with this ‘announcement’? We must not rejoice ourselve for having the support of another race, while degrading the support from the very race that we belong to. Because this will only means that we are being used by others. Thus, multiracial platform, through democratic means, will only brings unsettle feelings rather than hope or harmony. Multiracial platform ia a platform for all races to be in, not embodied in one individual or organisation. That means, BN is the multiracial platform.

    From Racism to Satanism
    1. If anyone thinks as a Malaysian at heart you will never support any of the current political parties who speaks only about championing or protecting their own race and religious interests. Whether it comes from UMNO, PAS, MCA, MIC, PKR, Gerakan, Hindraf, PBS, DAP, PPP or whatever new name it’s called racism and whoever supports that party is called a racist. It is no different from apartheid. It dirties and poison your soul.
    2. Those who are racists but speak with a fork tongue (Jeyklls), hiding it behind other causes like religion, meritocracy, education, poverty etc are even worse than clear cut racists and can only fit into the category of satans.
    3. Malaysian racists and the MSN have corrupted the following words which meant differently in other countries ex. nationalism, patriotism, royalists, freedom, liberty, corruption, democracy etc.
    4. Power, Greed and Selfishness rule in Malaysia and now we include Racism and Satanism.

In a country which has lost its direction, Anwar’s multiracial image is a breadth of fesh air. In pursuit of NEP, which was very relevant during its inception, the ruling party just forgot about the rest of the populace i.e. 45% of non-malays. A poicy implemented for the right reasons, had been hijacked by a handful of greedy politicians. The net result of select few filthy rich politicians and their family among the Malays, Chinese & Indians and a nation severely divided as Malays and Non-Malays. Such a situation forms the right incredient to cary this nation forward to the levels of any African Nation. We pray and hope that Anwar will be the right leader to tread the middle path to pull this nation from the certain path of disaster. God help us.

You have grossly disappointed me with your prevarication on the events at the bar council forum on 9 August 2008. Do not tell me that members of pkr acted without your knowledge and consent when they stood outside the bar council yelling racial insults and threatening abuse. And if they did, why have you not come out to denounce it and take action against those involved? Here’s a little flashback – 1998 : the lawyers marched against the injustice of the government’s prosecution of you. From 1998 till presently – the lawyers have held meetings and made press statements in any issue where the cause of justice has been sacrificed on the alter of politics (and many a time, it has concerned you, or your party or people associated with you). Most recently, in the Bersih March (just as with the Hindraf March) the lawyers stood waiting, ready to jump to the defence of any demonstrators arrested. You even had the gall to recently quote the President of the Malaysian Bar in one of your press statements in a bid for public sympathy. Where is your promise of a new dawn? Where is your consideration of what it is the Bar Council was trying to achieve at the forum? Let me put it in terms that will appeal to the politician in you, if not the man – the fight is far from over, and you will still need the non-malay public at your side. And they are watching what was allowed to happen on Saturday at the Bar Council.

But make sure you continue to make yourself humble and simple. Do the best you can to unite the various races in this country. Continue with the NEP but ensure that the poor of all races benefit. Make sure that meritocracy works and only the very best will get scholarships or enter local universities. When this is put in place, I believe the Malays will study hard in order for them to compete with the other races. In the long run, the country will truly benefits

    Dear DSAI

Because God addresses all human beings as “Children of Adam” in 7:26,
therefore, when you publicly declare to be an agent of the people, you are the truly
    worthy Muslim!

When you propound People’s Supremacy to counter the Malay Supremacy
advanced by UMNO, it reminds me about Nabi Musa. In 20:24 of the Qurán, it says
Pharaoh “has transgressed all bounds”. His people oppressed their slaves cruelly
(2:49). This is further elaborated as “Pharaoh and his warriors conducted themselves
in the land with pride and injustice, and thought they would never be recalled to Us
(28:39)”. It is done through Pharaoh “exalted himself in the land. He divided his
people into castes………… Truly, he was an evil doer (28:4)”. The Divine judgment
on their foul deeds is “He (Pharaoh) shall stand at the head of his people on the Day
of Resurrection and lead them into the Fire (11:98)”. This much is referring to everyday
activity right here and now, “today” within Malaysia because Allah is a living eternal
God. “This day (45:34 & 7:51)”, God merely needs to turn their face backward to have
a good look at “today (45:34 & 7:51)”, it would be enough to wipe off the triumph joy in
their face (4:47) for advancing the agenda of Malay Supremacy “today”. It is seeking
to relate “today” activity with the divine order of “peace”, which is the final destination
of “to love God” and “to love fellowmen”. It is in this “peace” that His creatures must
live out their life while God addresses all human beings as “Children of Adam” in 7:26 .
Since Pharaoh and his people have taken the law unto their own hands, God
Himself will act as the avenger. Thus said Allah your Lord, “But it was Our will to favour
those who were oppressed, and to make them leaders and inheritors, and to give
them power in the land; and to show Pharaoh, Haman, and their army, at their hands,
the very thing they dreaded (28:4-6)”.

In short and to the point, Muslim voters in Permatang Pauh must vote for DSAI,
our “Nabi Musa”, to urge in the the dawning future we seek in vain, which is very
close to us. It is in our mouth, in our heart, so that we can do it. The new future we
search for is at the outer fringe, on the cutting edge of the circle in which we now
stand. The breakthrough we seek at all fronts is located along the outer limit of our
perceived religious respectability in having Malay Supremacy. There, God is
pioneering His re-creating all things anew for all Malaysians. What we welcome in our
unseen silent heart, God will let it comes toward us.

As Muslims, therefore, we must constantly on the watch out befitting our station
as His chosen servants. This Islamic duty incumbent requires His servants to avoid
becoming so influenced and engrossed by self-desires to have Malay Supremacy,
which is synonymous with Pharaoh “exalted himself in the land. He divided his
people into castes………… Truly, he was an evil doer (28:4)”.

    Shalom
    A Malaysian.

    Dear DSAI,
When you take over the reins of this nation I beg you to change this often over used or rather misused slogan “RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE”
Sir, when used, the above infers that “you object but tolerate”. Politicians from all the three races have misused Race & Religion to the levels where a whole lot of generation had grown up knowing not what is being “MALAYSIAN” is all about.
The slogan could be changed to “RELIGIOUS ACCEPTANCE”. This, when repeated by any leader with honest convictions will in due time find its way into the heartss & minds of the general populace. Right now you are the only leader who can pull this off. Once this gets done, dealing with the Racial bigots from all quarters may prove to be much less troublesome, so we wish to believe. What if its the other way around. The Muslims having a forum on their rights, have more rights, have all the rights, damn the chinese & indians to hell, etc.., etc…

    Eh… So! What’s our non-muslim rights?
You see, Malaysians ARE still racist………!

Datuk Anwar, please bring us all for one! Our current PM & DPM has not voice their disgust over these matter. They are not bringing us Malaysians together. They are not practicing what they preached after the March 2008 election.

They have the ‘Tidak apa’ agenda written all over their faces…!

To comment no. 8 Abdul Syarif Ali:

BN is not a multiracial platform. It’s a assembly of platforms with different racial agenda. Each component party fight his or her own races. I can’t imagine who is going to take care of Malaysia if this trend continues.

What Malaysia needs now is true unity between races and not more division. BN model only makes the matter worse. 50 years of failure is enough for all of us to make a change to this very country that we love.

Malaysiakini like the Malaysian Bar Council hates Islam and Muslims.

By Davy de Verteuil, Trinidad & Tobago

Malaysian(kini)blogs forcing consensus by highlighting one side of the story which throws an unfair blame towards its Muslim majority. It behaves like wise the MSMs which hates Islam and Muslims. Although attempts to de-constructing dialogs as mere discussions for better understanding is a camouflage in de-constructing Islam and Malay status itself.

    1. Why the Bar Council idea should not be considered malicious and provocative?

    2. What dialogue is the Bar Council “you” seeking from a people with a 1400 year custom?

    3. Why is the Bandar Kulim MP label a hard liner now?

While your claim of India like China having more Muslims than Malaysia that does not denote the influence and founding institutions by way of numbers, Malaysia is a sovereign country and no nation sovereignty is determined by its size.

For your information Islam and Muslims are violently kept in check both in China Kashmir and India proper by forceful assimilations and persecution of all sorts.
I have never seen or heard you beautiful Malaysians utter a word in protest except Malays and direct expatriates coming from the affected regions. So have a good look before you attempt to trivialise the Malays inalienable right to guard their customs and way of life.

However I implore the Malay people; it is not proper that you refer to your fellow humankind as pigs- this is an insult also to God and His messengers. We are all part of the human family created by GOD and this goes against the essence of Islamic enlightenment.

Have the ‘Bar Council’ not realized the hatred from respondents in the many blogs in Malaysia and will this be its barometer to further procrastination?

What are you telling us that this reactionary behaviour is entirely the Muslims fault also?

I disagree with the name calling yet I refuse to pander to the Bar Council’s condescension of innocence as they claim that the call was merely to discuss a particular problem.
The Bar Council’s determination and willful defiance, its sarcasms betray the rational here. This is not a professional institution representing issues of Law and Justice but a group rearing to displace a people and their indigenous right. The Bar’s actions are fraught with ulterior motives and could erode the little trust form the nation’s majority.

In my honest opinion this group of legal individuals have attack the constitution of Malaysia as they use their offices to challenge and turn over the constitution through an assembly outside of parliament.

How can an earnest broker of peaceful dialogue fail to research what was not long ago where a senior member of the said BC coupled a dog’s bark to that of the Muslim sacred call to prayer?
Take a look at the cowardly acts now invading Malaysian blog site; the constant curse and insults directed toward the Muslim and Islam yet the scrunch of their so call complaint is about the 300 and an MP emotional outburst against the BAR’s defiance against a backdrop of endless warnings not to proceed.

This isn’t freedom of any kind rather it’s a recipe for anarchy neither is this the defense of any community but an affront to disenfranchise the other. The Bar Council acted like a legal and intellectual entity geared toward bulling the Malays.

Riling any group of people invigorates extremism and the Bar Council should blame itself for the near fracas it brought about. Transformations are taking place in South & Latin America and in Africa where the indigenous have been marginalized brutalized that left various cultures extinct as the Élite are on the offensive yet here in Malaysia the Early people are told that their ways and customs are unacceptable which form a historical point of view goes against the very grain of freedom liberty and justice.

To All quarters, until you all come to appreciate that none can move the sun and the moon from where they stand there will always be antagonism.
The Bar Council attempt to diminish indigenous Muslim rights and customs in an all too pretentious dialogs is a betrayal of civility and boarders on a malicious coup, they know all too well that attacking Islam tantamount to declaring war on its forbearer.

Perhaps they were testing the soil but they were overwhelmed by a small band determined not to spare as much as a spark.

The March 8 election results and the current political uncertainty was not due to Muslim or Islamic traditions in Malaysia but that failures for accountability unbridled corruption and ineptitude across the board were dragging the nation down.

There are elements (Bar Council)who believe that this is an opportune moment to belt the Muslims and ransom the country of its norms and founding traditions- well sorry….That demo sound a warning otherwise.

And for those of you sighting the US as an example on any issues of democracy freedom and justice – by GOD you don’t have to go there – just read….I lived and was educated in the US and Canada; you have no idea of the US except for its Hollywood and media fallacies impressed on the rest of the world.

Judging from your disgusted ill or uninformed or both; points of views I can only ask: are you all happy with the slaughter of over 1million Iraqis and the pretext by which this mass killings were executed? For your information they weren’t all Muslims though majority are and the thousands of brown Christians who were considered collateral damage that perished.

I have not read or experience similar out pouring of hatred towards Britain and the US as I am witnessing here both by the host blogger and its contributors.

How dare you site America as an example where it contains the biggest prison population in the world/history and the black brown and chinky eye peoples are often targets of abuse due to inherent unrepentant racist that forms America’s reactionary safety valve?

Why is it that in Malaysia the indigenous have to surrender their traditions and customs because it is deemed unfair when at the same time you “Bar Council” wished to invoke your customs and perceived rights as equitable and just? Aren’t the Malay Muslims losing their rights then? I am not afraid to say this; The Malays like everyone else are this nation, but they Malays are the earlier ones; like it or not, that carries a lot of weight as much as Right.

I will always know my rights in the house of my in-laws no other method in adoption will have me fooled.

From the desk of an Arawak African & Indian in ‘ONE’ on the beautiful Islands in the Caribbean.

Arawak is a people or tribe who is refer to as American Indian or Red Indian.

Indigenous rights are my struggle- No apology.

Mankind must refrain from classifying or slotting people into groups. After all, all the human races are from the same origin. That is the reason we can get blood transfusions from any person whose blood is compatible with our type during emergencies. Are the doctors going to analyse whether the blood transfused to save a life came from a Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or Christian during an emergency? So what was the commotion about when there was the interfaith discussion organised by the Bar Council? Why are we so bigotted in our outlook on life as a whole? Why are some religions looked upon as more superior to others? Aren’t all these religions following a set of moral values almost identical and similar? Where have we failed in teaching our people respect, honour and courtesy? I am refraining myself from using direct attack at anyone in particular for I wish not to degrade myself as a human being and bring disgrace or demoralise my religious code of ethics.

The recent involvement of Pakatan Rakyat people in the protest which had cross the line in depriving the basic democracy values in freedom of speech through threatening and storming into the forum will certainly bring an unfathomable expectation of the coming by election.

The demonstrations and protests against the forum are acceptable as they are all basic democracy values as well but unfortunately they have breached the line through violence and disrespectful insults.

The PM ,DPM’s comments are an example of having problems swept under the carpet in the past and current which eventually produce immature and narrow mindsets in the Malaysian society.

I salute the Bar Council on giving a brave try on holding the forum as it truly reflect “Where we Malaysian are today” and “is working together hand in hand as one an illusion afterall”. The people will now be confused on the stand of the probably new form govt.

Congratulations BN as you know that you have unleashed the long rooted hidden poisoned mindsets within the various parties afterall you are the one who breed and grown us all these 50 years.

Selamat ulang tahun kelahiran yg ke 61. tarikh yg sama utk anak kedua sy yg ke 11 thn.
kenyataan DSAI agen utk semua kaum tak ramai yg dpt fahami dgn baik. sedangkan minda tasawwur (gambaran) visi dan misi Islam adalah utk membawa keamanan dan memperjuangkan hak utk semua. bila nabi kata sama saja org arab dgn bukan arab…maka berdentum guruh arab quraisy bahkan arab semenanjung yg pekat dgn asobiah mencerca dan menghina nabi. bahkan faktor kenapa nabi dimusuhi. bila dinyatakan hak tuan hamba (org arab) terhadap hamba (org negro) adalah menjaga kebajikan hambanya…hamba layak makan apa yg dimakan oleh tuannya…pakai apa yg dipakai tuannya….ia mencabar minda asobiah. sama bila dikatakan kita mesti jaga hak bukan melayu sama seperti kita jaga hak melayu….ramai melatah. kita patut jadi umat yg penuh kemuliaan menjadi penegak kebenaran dan menjaga hak asasi manusia. macam mana kita nak tegakkan kebenaran kehakiman jika dtg ujian sbgmn penghakiman thdp khalifah Ali yg tidak mampu mendtgkan saksi baju besinya dicuri oleh yahudi dan hampir didakwa kerana tuduhan palsu. bgmn iman kita akan memuhasabah kita jika rakan sebangsa kita menggelar org bukan bangsa kita dgn `hai bangsa hitam’ spt yg digelar kepada bilal. kita tak layak jadi peneraju umat selagi kita belum mampu membezakan amanah sbg penjaga keadilan dgn semangat asobiah bangsa semata2. bangsa kita sedang rosak akhlak di uitm apa pejuang2 bangsa nak kata? sensitif kita pd islam. tapi apa kita lakukan pd agama kita sblm menyalahkan tipuhelah dan kekuatan musuh?

    Tahniah buat DSAI

Tapi saya agak musykil.
