This morning the Malaysian Election Commission announced nomination and polling day for the by-election that I will contest in Permatang Pauh. I look forward to the campaign period to meet with voters in my home constituency. I invite all Malaysians to join me in this historic campaign to bring forth a New Dawn for Malaysia as we work together to build a more peaceful and prosperous nation.

At the same time we would reiterate our longstanding concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. To this date, the evidence of phantom voters and ballot box stuffing has yet to be addressed by the Election Commission. The poor handling of the use of indelible ink in the General Elections gives all Malaysians, particularly those in Permatang Pauh, reason to be concerned about the conduct of polling this month. I urge the Election Commission to take this opportunity to restore some credibility to its reputation by fulfilling its constitutional mandate to ensure that voting is fair and unbiased.

On a darker note, I regret to say that I fear an enormous injustice is about to be perpetrated upon the Malaysian people, worse than those actions taken in 1988 and 1998 which rendered almost irreparable harm against the institutions of democracy and the rule of law. While some individuals suffered greatly by those actions, the Malaysian people have been the greatest losers.

Tomorrow I will be charged with a crime I did not commit. The real criminals will, in their efforts to humiliate me and to derail the people’s aspirations for transformational change in Malaysia, hide behind a smokescreen created by the government controlled mainstream media.

This travesty of justice will take place. It will happen with the active support and the criminal involvement of the highest echelons of the police and politicians—including the office of the Prime Minister.

Statement of Former Vice President Gore

(Nashville, TN). The real tragedy is that the government of Malaysia engages in character assassination to silence an effective leader of the political opposition. Twice, now, the government has used the same tactic in an effort to politically destroy Anwar Ibrahim. In the process, however, it is damaging its own credibility at home and abroad. The means exist for the government to allow this situation to be quickly resolved, simultaneously restoring dignity to Anwar Ibrahim and to itself. I hope greater wisdom
will prevail.

Satu notis telah diperoleh daripada pihak polis pada jam 12.10 tengahari tadi meminta supaya Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hadir ke Mahkamah Majistret, Jalan Duta esok, 7 Ogos 2008.

Berikutan itu satu sidang media tergempar akan diadakan pada hari ini, 6 Ogos 2008 pada jam 3 petang bertempat di Ibu Pejabat KeADILan di Merchant Square, Petaling Jaya.

Peguamnya, Sankara N. Nair ketika ditemui pemberita di hadapan rumah Anwar di Segambut Dalam, di sini pada pukul 10.40 pagi ini, bagaimanapun enggan mengulas lanjut tujuan anak guamnya dibawa ke mahkamah.

Beberapa pegawai polis berpakaian preman kelihatan berada di hadapan rumah Anwar di Segambut Dalam, di sini sejak pukul 10 pagi.
Perkembangan lanjut akan dimaklumkan dari semasa ke semasa.

Many people, especially some cantankerous bloggers and doctors are wondering why the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has so far not spoken. See Not sodomy-related? Let’s not be anal( Malaysiakini July 31).

Until now, I have remained silent on this issue, as my liberal and passionate views of social justice may not be acceptable to many who feel that we should be cautious in accommodating the powers that be.

Umum mengetahui mutakhir ini harga minyak petrol telah mulai turun dari $135 setong kepada sekitar $120 setong. Perubahan harga ini mendorong kita untuk terus komited menurunkan harga minyak sebaik sahaja Pakatan Rakyat memerintah Malaysia.Rentetan daripada perkembangan baru ini, saya menjelaskan bahawa jika hari ini Pakatan Rakyat memerintah, esok harga minyak petrol turun sebanyak 70 sen. Mesej ini saya sampaikan di sepanjang siri ceramah saya dan yang terbaru di Bentong, malam semalam.Berikutan pengumuman ini maka adanya tuduhan dilemparkan kononnya mekanisme penurunan harga minyak yang saya anjurkan bersifat populis. Pemilihan perkataan tersebut sememangnya melucukan. Ianya bertujuan menyembunyikan fakta jelas iaitu hasrat kita ialah untuk meringankan beban rakyat. Kita tidak populis, kita pro-rakyat! Kelemahan Barisan Nasional yang diketuai Umno di dalam mengurus ekonomi serta menyalahguna khazanah negara tidak lagi boleh dibiarkan.Matlamat kita ke Putrajaya bagi memastikan perubahan berlaku dan institusi-institusi kenegaraan dipulihkan. Ekonomi berada dalam keadaan gelita manakala mutu pendidikan merudum!

Dan saya percaya semua rakyat Malaysia juga berkongsi keresahan ini. Pujangga besar Muhammad Iqbal dalam karyanya Zabur-e-Ajam tepat sekali dalam mengungkapkan hasrat Pakatan Rakyat untuk membuat perubahan:

Membakar semangat baru
untuk bangsa dan zaman ini;
Memberi nyawa baru
pada jasad yang telah tua.

KUALA LUMPUR (The Sun, Aug 5, 2008) : The Bar Council has raised several questions over issues arising from what it terms as “troubling” reports over the medical examination by a doctor of Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan who accuses Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of committing sodomy.

“Reports that the examination, done a few hours before Saiful lodged a police report against Anwar, showed no evidence that Saiful had been sodomised by anyone has raised serious quesions,” said Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who has died aged 89, was a prolific novelist and memoirist, whose life’s work, in the best traditions of Russian literature, transcended the realm of pure letters. He was a moral and spiritual leader, whose books were noted as much for their ethical dimension as for their aesthetic qualities. Between 1968 and 1976, he was a towering figure in the twin worlds of literature and politics, expressing the pain of his long-suffering people and single-handedly challenging the autocratic government of one of the world’s two superpowers.

ANALYSIS

AUG 5 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will win the Permatang Pauh by-election by a mile. And Pakatan Rakyat could end up snaring more seats if snap elections were held soon.

This scenario is not far-fetched judging by findings of a recent survey which debunks the notion that there is widespread remorse bias among Malaysians for supporting the Opposition in Election 2008.

Indeed, the poll shows that the sentiment towards Pakatan Rakyat has strengthened since March 8, especially among Chinese and Indians voters. The comprehensive survey on political developments in the country saw more than 3,000 people being interviewed last month.

Just over 31 per cent of those polled said that their view of the Opposition has remained the same since March 8 while 36.7 per cent said that their view of the Opposition has improved.
