An economic lesson on oil prices in Klang

Malaysiakini
Terence Netto

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim mixed skillful staccato attack with lessons in the economics of oil pricing and prudent financial management when welcoming former MCA Wanita deputy leader Dr Tan Yee Kew and 1,700 others to the PKR fold in Klang today.

Speaking to a staunchly middle-class audience that packed the convention hall of the Klang Executive Club in Jalan Bukit Raja, the PKR chief wove a theory of oil price fixing gleaned from petroleum pricing expert Daniel Yergin into his standard set of rhetorical darts aimed at Barisan Nasional.

“Daniel Yergin, a renowned expert in the economics of petroleum price fixing, said that US$135 per barrel is the break point in the international market,” explained Anwar to an overflow crowd that at that point could be forgiven for thinking that the PKR supremo was referring to a game of tennis.

But Anwar, deftly switching gears from orator to teacher, summarised Yergin’s theory of when oil prices would flatten and fall to convey the point that if the price on the international market fell to US$135 a barrel, a Pakatan Rakyat government would lower the local price per litre by 50 sen and if it fell to US$125, it would reduce the price by 70 sen.

The punch lines in the Yergin-based explanation were in the reduced prices a Pakatan government would impose.

The audience cheered those lines with gusto, showing appreciation for the suggestion that the leader they had come to hear was not merely a tub-thumper with a set of applause lines but a serious dabbler in the dismal science of economics.

Anwar said a Pakatan government would save some RM3 billion by reducing power producer Tenaga Nasional’s reserve capacity and from stamping out corrupt practices, all of which he said would enable the coalition, if given the chance to helm the government, to effect economies that would be passed on to the people in reduced prices.

‘We rule not for cronies’

“We will rule for the people, not for cronies, families and in-laws,” he thundered.

“I will set the example by telling Azizah that she is not to be involved in business and my children that they will have to be professionals on their own. Unless I set the example, it will be very difficult to get a Pakatan government adhering down the line to these stringent requirements.”

Anwar described Tan’s switch to PKR as being in line with the principles of her political struggle.

“She has the education, the performance and the integrity to go up the ladder but she has recognised that she can no longer do so within a corrupt system.”

“Her decision to join PKR is a good sign of things to come. It has given us spirit and heart for the start of the final push which will begin tonight in Permatang Pauh.”

Anwar was to kick off his campaign to be elected to the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat vacated last Friday by his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail - the three-term incumbent who resigned the seat to make way for her husband.

Firstly, Dr Tan’s entry into PKR would indeed receive a very warm reception from the rakyat, especially the Chines community. But she would work for all in her constituency in expectation of the underlying principles for which the coalition represents. Secondly, Anwar’s specific references to his children not deserving the special favours must be practised in letter, spirit and essence. Unlike the likes of the former PM and the curent PM, their MCA and MIC henchmen. And lastly, the Malaysian rakyat needs to afford Anwar this opportunity to prove his worth and mettle. What have we got to lose now when we have been losing so much for the past 30 years?

    Dear DSAI!

I wished I had the taped version of your speech t dwell deeper into what you have said! You, or rather your style, remind me of the off-the-cuff talks given by the late US President John Kennedy to the United Nations more than 40 years ago!

Keep up the good work, Mr Prime Minister in-waiting!!!

PM, BE LEADER for all !!!

    18Northie Aug 1st, 2008 at 2:53 am
Hmmm… really sad … Malaysia as a beautiful and honourable country could have such leaders … be it DSBadawi, DSNajib … Lawyers and Doctors as well .. professional in their respective field .. adourn by many … could be so unscrupulous and damnned their highly regarded profession to assist and be part of a scandal just to get rid of DSAI a highly regarded Malaysian worldwide, when we should all be proud and show ultimate respect.
What goes around comes around. Be kind and loving to all. To DSBadawi, why, why tell me why you have to listen to your son-in-law and to honour DSNajib with your position when he is currently in negative territory. Why do you want to tarnish the good name of Malaysia! Accept DSAI for who he is, he did bring Malaysia fame, beautiful comment even from the Iron Lady back in 1992 that DSAI is one of the best Finance Minister if not the best!!!
Forgive and forget! You, Mr. PM do it and I do sembayang that all Malaysian will as well. With great powers comes great responsibilitiessssssssssss!!!
    …to be cont!
    4 August 2008
。 Mr. PM, your position is not any position. This position calls for greatness and humility to serve the nation. Bring peace and prosperity to all. As the leader, though in Malaysia, you are not elected but selected by the then DSMahathir (now TunMahathir), yet, helming the nation you need to display fairness to all. You need to thank your lucky star being placed in such important position. Yes, you did started voicing you will go all out to clear corruption and instill justice. To be THE CHAMPION but sad to say since you helm, the nation is now in a bad situation if not worsening.

You still have a chance, in your time of power, do realize that lots of skeletons are coming out the closets, nail them as they appear, it seems to be helping you to correct the wrongs, bring all those culprits DOWN now as only now you are the LEADER of all. DON’T WAIT LAH!!!

By the way, remember, your position is the greatest position in any NATION! Do want only the best to take your position and not just anyone or because you are being push by anyone.

Your position can and should only be taken by the BEST and only the BEST you should wish to be the next PM. Do understand, let THE ONE whom deserve to lead after you be allowed the CHANCE!!!

Mr. PM, DSBadawi, as for now, do not allow your subject down. Do not allow anyone to dictate your action. Do not allow those you need to throw to the gallows escape before you leave since its your call. Your DELIVERANCE is NOW, NOW, NOW!!! ACTION CALL FOR! Be remembered as a great PM! I wish that for you for I am also a Malaysian.

Alas, be a BELOVED LEADER and remembered.

Hmmm, for now, how about inviting DSAI to be your special advisor as you do need the best to help our once adourn nation by many developed nation to resurface and be reactive again.

IF DSAI is THE ONE then he is PM in Waiting of course!!! Is there another better?

RM2 per litre will have implications: Najib
    By LOH FOON FONG

KUALA LUMPUR: Lowering the price of petrol to RM2 per litre is possible but there are implications, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Abdul Razak.

“Anything is possible. It depends on how much you want to set aside for subsidy,” he said.

However, he said, at the current rate, the subsidy was already huge.

On Sunday, PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim promised that he would fix the petrol price at RM2 per litre if Pakatan Rakyat succeeded in forming the government. The RM2 per litre is a 50 sen decrease from his earlier promised price.

EVERBODY READ THIS!!! STUPID IN THE MAKIN PM!!! CAKAP MCM SIAL

Money is better spent in the hands of the rakyat than current BN-corruptors. Simple economics: Money to over 10million rakyat to spend is better than money to 100 BN-cronies to spend. Which scenario will drive the economy of the country?

  19. 19 Dr Death Aug 5th, 2008 at 11:09 am

Thanx, Dato’ Seri…i really hope the oil price will drop very soon…..the rakyat need leaders who really care for us…we trust you, totally…Dato’ Seri…!

Orang lain tak tau la, tapi… macam nak nangis bila isi minyak.

Klu RM1.50 lagi baik.
