Press Statement by Karpal Singh in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, 30th July 2008:

The statement by Home Minister, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar,

‘He (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has not been charged yet. What are we supposed to drop?’

Syed Hamid Albar cannot be tat naïve not to comprehend what Anwar Ibrahim is saying,

‘Stop the investigation, forward the report to the attorney-General’s Chambers and reclassify the case as NFA (No Further Action).’

Clearly, what has to be addressed is whether the police should pursue the investigations on the sodomy allegation against Anwar Ibrahim.

International Herald Tribune, 1st August 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Public confidence in Malaysia’s political and economic future has dwindled dramatically in recent months, with the prime minister’s popularity hitting an all-time low, a survey showed Friday.

The independent Merdeka Center research firm found that only 28 percent of registered voters polled in July felt encouraged by the country’s direction, a severe fall from 68 percent in late February.

The arrest of Anwar Ibrahim, former Prime Minister and respected opposition leader, in Kuala Lumpur on 16 July 2008 on charges that are obviously politically motivated is a cause of grave concern to all of Malaysia’s friends in the international community.

These charges come only three months after the Keadilan party made the strongest electoral showing by an opposition party in Malaysian history and less than a day after Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of his intention to stand for election to Parliament.

In a replay of almost a decade ago in which Anwar Ibrahim’s imprisonment for six years on transparently political grounds discredited the Malaysian government, police and judiciary in the eyes of the world community, yet another smear campaign of similar allegations threaten the reputation of the Prime Minister and undermines Malaysia’s electoral politics, rule of law and democracy.

Financial Times – The FT’s Assif Shameen spoke to Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia’s opposition leader, about the sodomy charges that he faces and his intent to return to politics. The following is an edited transcript of the interview.

Financial Times: There are reports that you will be arrested and charged imminently. Clearly, you don’t think they have a case?

Anwar Ibrahim: First of all, with all the evidence that is now before them, I don’t see any reason why the authorities should continue with these investigations of alleged sodomy. There is this medical report, which is authentic, very clear. A doctor who examined the accuser clearly ruled out any alleged sodomy.
