Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
“I was dumped into this high-security police lockup for, you see, these high-level criminals. . . . On the cement floor, without any mattresses. That explains why I have to be back on this.” Anwar Ibrahim gingerly peels up his shirt to reveal a corset-like back brace. And then he bursts into laughter.
For a man released from a night in jail only a few days earlier, Mr. Anwar is an awfully jolly man. Malaysia’s opposition leader has been accused of sodomy by a former aide — a criminal offense in this Muslim-majority country that could send him to jail for up to two decades. It’s a bizarre déjà vu for the bespectacled politician, who spent 1998-2004 behind bars on a trumped-up sodomy charge the last time he challenged for political power.
But he’s pushing ahead: On Wednesday, Mr. Anwar vowed to run for parliament “imminently” in a by-election, with the aim of toppling the government by September. If he’s successful, he could be the next prime minister of Malaysia.
None of this would matter much outside Southeast Asia were it not for the fact that Mr. Anwar’s political coalition espouses something unusual in the Muslim world: the virtues of a secular, free-market democracy. More Muslims live in Asia — Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh — than in the Middle East.
Mr. Anwar is unusually suited to bridge East-West divides. A Muslim, “though never typically very religious,” he chuckles, he is a good friend of Saudi Arabia and the U.S. alike — a man who memorized “hundreds of Elvis Presley, Paul Anka and Ricky Nelson tunes” in his youth, but also attended weekend religious classes and, in his 20s, founded the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia. He has never been afraid to argue that democracy and Islam are compatible forces — or to make that case to undemocratic Arab regimes.
In many ways, Malaysia — though it sports big urban centers and modern wonders like the Petronas Towers — seems stuck in a time warp. The media is largely state-controlled, and the executive branch still locks up political dissidents without trial under the British colonial-era Internal Security Act.
Mahathir Mohamad’s 22-year rule, which ended in 2003, did bring economic development to Malaysia. But Mr. Anwar says only a “fringe few” would ignore the widespread corruption that also occurred. Mr. Anwar, who was Dr. Mahathir’s deputy at the time, found himself accused of sodomy in 1998 when he started pushing for reform. His arrest and imprisonment brought thousands of people onto Kuala Lumpur’s streets.
And the recent accusation against him? It is “unfortunate,” Mr. Anwar said as we settled into conference room chairs at his People’s Justice Party’s new headquarters in a strip mall in a Kuala Lumpur suburb last week. But it’s a sign that “the system is crumbling.”
“Malaysia was resilient — at least in the late ’80s and ’90s — primarily because it was able to attract foreign investment,” Mr. Anwar says. “It has lost that. So we have to see why? Well,” he answers his own question, “economic policies considered obsolete — particularly the New Economic Policy.” He’s referring to the pervasive pro-Malay affirmative-action program that reaches deeply into almost every corner of the economy and the university system. “There’s no rule of law, endemic corruption and general incompetence” in Malaysia, he adds.
Malaysia’s current government is trying harder than any other Asian regime — save the little kingdom of Brunei — to push closer to the Middle East, luring investment and Arab tourists to its shores. Women shrouded from head to toe are common sights in Kuala Lumpur’s upscale shopping district. The country is an emerging center for Islamic finance, and Saudi-backed mosques are popping up everywhere.
Mr. Anwar thinks there’s another way forward: by incorporating conservative Muslims into the democratic fold, and enforcing a secular rule of law without exception. He also made this point in a chat we had at his home in Kuala Lumpur last month. “You need a free media and free and fair elections. Moderate democracies and parties don’t accept radicalism. You must give them space. Muslims can’t be made to feel that democracy can only be applied to certain groups. That’s not healthy.”
Mr. Anwar’s party is largely Malay, and secular. But his three-party coalition also includes a Chinese party and a conservative Muslim party that advocates Islamic law. The latter, the Parti Islam se-Malaysia, has supported measures such as segregated grocery store lines for men and women, bans on lipstick and antifornication laws. Why does Mr. Anwar’s multiethnic coalition include a party that embraces such a platform?
“We took some years to cement this relationship because I don’t want it to be seen purely as a politically expedient exercise,” he says. “We base it on a clear reform agenda. So what we did instead of using labels — Islam, secularism, liberal — we spell out what we want. So in the agenda, for example, we believe in ‘democracy and freedom.’ By this we mean freedom of religion, or worship, freedom of expression, freedom of conscience. Which means all laws to the contrary will have to be rejected.”
Mr. Anwar returned to Malaysia in 2006 — after teaching stints at Georgetown University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies — to launch a political comeback. He utilized every tool at his disposal outside the state-run media — “SMSes, blogs, Web sites” — to get out his message of anticorruption, freedom and religious tolerance. His coalition romped home in March with more than one-third of the seats in the national Parliament, and the leadership of five of Malaysia’s 13 states. The result stunned the ruling United Malays National Organization, which has dominated Malaysian politics since independence in 1957.
Mr. Anwar gets almost giddy when I query him about the result: “People on the ground, they couldn’t care two hoots about this scurrilous attack on my character,” he exclaims, referring to the latest sodomy accusation. “They want to hear me talk about change . . . I think the old system — the center cannot hold. Remember that brilliant piece by Yeats?” Mr. Anwar is referring, aptly, to the poem, “The Second Coming.”
He thinks political change in Malaysia could reverberate outside the country’s borders, setting a “crucial” example for the rest of the Muslim world. But is the rest of the Muslim world ready to hear his message? What about Iran?
“I respect Iran as a nation, with such a great civilization, with great potential,” Mr. Anwar says, evading the question with a grin. But “they know my views on democracy. They know my engagement with the West and with the Americans.”
Being pro-American isn’t popular in Malaysia, and Mr. Anwar is careful to stress his distance from Washington. “For example, the occupation of American forces in Iraq. I disagree, I totally disagree. But I don’t treat America as my enemy. And I believe that we would gain immensely by maintaining very good diplomatic and economic relations, trade relations, with America. But it doesn’t mean we must agree with them on many issues, or most issues.”
It also doesn’t mean that Mr. Anwar agrees with other Islamic powers, either. On a recent trip to Saudi Arabia, he met government officials and heard them talk of their modern education system. “I said I was impressed,” but “quality education” needs “a liberal democratic space” and “creativity.”
Could Malaysia serve as an example for the rest of the Islamic world, as a tolerant, Muslim-majority and multiethnic democracy? “Right now, it’s certainly a very poor example,” he says, laughing out loud. “But it has this enormous potential in terms of gender equality. Although you know, my wife wouldn’t agree with that term. She says it’s not that equal for now. . . . You should say, moving toward gender equality.” Mr. Anwar’s wife and one of his daughters are members of Parliament.
The sodomy accusation is meant not just to discredit Mr. Anwar, but to rip apart his nascent coalition. It was levied a few days before Mr. Anwar was scheduled to announce his candidacy for parliament. Fearing the worst, he fled to the Turkish embassy — another moderate Muslim democracy — for refuge. Since then, photos purportedly showing his accuser meeting with high-level government officials began to circulate. The government denies any involvement.
“To allow for some segment or sector, groups, within the system to resort to these dirty machinations is pathetic,” he says, then pauses. “To them, it may be necessary to pre-empt our next move, my contesting the by-election.”
Malaysia’s most prominent mufti, or religious scholar, Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Harussani Zakaria, has backed Mr. Anwar’s cause. Around 2,000 supporters flocked to the police station last week when word got out that Mr. Anwar was spending the night there. “I’ve advised my supporters to remain calm,” he says. “Don’t overreact, don’t be provoked. Because that’s exactly what they want. In any authoritarian system, what they want to present is a near chaos so they can declare a state of emergency.”
Why not pack it all in and retire with his wife and six children? “You come in with a clear conviction, that you believe in freedom, you believe in democracy,” Mr. Anwar replies. “And you have so much affection for the people. You love your country. You want the country to succeed. And this is one, unique, multiracial, multireligious country with a Muslim majority that should prove to the world that we can co-exist and succeed with a vibrant economy. Now, there’s a lot of intimidation, a lot of efforts to derail this. If I choose to surrender, keep quiet, then it would adversely affect the process.”
He asks a rhetorical question: “If I, in my position, with my experience, have no courage, just because I was beaten up before, humiliated, then what do you expect from the people? What sort of leadership do you provide?”
Mr. Anwar’s aides are gesticulating to him at the window outside his office — he’s late for his next appointment. “It’s going to be tough,” he says. “But this time, I am certain — as we say, inshallah, God willing, we are going to make it.” He laughs, and walks away, still smiling.

LET SET THE STORY STRAIGHT, JUST TO REMIND THE SO CALL “DATUK SERI MODS ALI RUSTAM†HE CANNOT COMPARE ANWAR TO THE PRISONER/DETAINEES IN GUANTANAMO.
FIRST OF ALL, THOSE SO CALLED DETAINEES WHICH THEY ARE COMATANTS AND ARE CAUGHT IN THE BATTLEFIELD AND ARE PRISONER OF WAR. THE UNITED STATES ARE AT WAR WITH.
ANWAR, WHICH I STILL REMEMBER HE IS A FORMER MINISTER OF FINANCE AND ALSO A DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, A MALAYSIAN CITIZEN AND A MEMBERS OF THE PARLIAMENT/UMNO.
ANWAR’S WAS LOCKED-UP WITH HARDCORE CRIMINALS OVERNIGHT AND FORCED TO SLEEP ON THE CEMENT FLOOR: ANY FORMER DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER DON’T DESERVE THIS. NO MALAYSIAN DESERVES THIS. WHY HE IS TREATED LIKE A MAJOR CRIMINAL AND PUBLIC ENEMY? SHORT OF TORTURE!
ALL STARTED TOWARDS THE END OF THE 1990’S WITH ANWAR FRONTAL ATTACK AGAINST WHAT HE DESCRIBED AS THE WIDESPREAD CULTURE OF NEPOTISM AND CRONYISM WITHIN UMNO ANGERED MAHATHIR, AS DID HIS ATTEMPTS TO DISMANTLE THE PROTECTIONIST POLICIES THAT MAHATHIR HAD SET UP. “CRONYISM” WAS IDENTIFIED BY ANWAR AS A MAJOR CAUSE OF CORRUPTION AND MISAPPROPRIATION OF FUNDS IN THE COUNTRY. MAHATHIR RETALIATED BY ISOLATING ANWAR WITHIN UMNO.
ANWAR CONTINUED HIS ASSAULT ON WHAT HE CALLED THE RAMPANT CORRUPTION WITHIN MAHATHIR’S ADMINISTRATION, BY ATTEMPTING TO IMPOSE TRANSPARENT AUDITS ON MAJOR CONGLOMERATES AND BUSINESS EMPIRES, WHICH, HE ALLEGED, HAD BEEN OVERCHARGING FOR GOVERNMENT PROJECTS AND EVADING TAXES. ONE OF THE POTENTIAL VICTIMS WOULD HAVE BEEN MAHATHIR’S SON, MIRZAN MAHATHIR, WHO WAS A DIRECTOR IN ALMOST 100 PRIVATE AND GOVERNMENT-LINKED COMPANIES. CONGLOMERATES THAT WERE CLOSELY LINKED TO THE GOVERNMENT, SUCH AS RENONG, WOULD HAVE BEEN ADVERSELY AFFECTED AS WELL.
IN APRIL 2008, ANWAR CELEBRATED HIS OFFICIAL RETURN TO THE POLITICAL STAGE, AS HIS BAN FROM PUBLIC OFFICE EXPIRED A DECADE AFTER HE WAS FIRED AS DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER. ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS THE OPPOSITION SEIZED A THIRD OF PARLIAMENTARY SEATS AND FIVE STATES IN THE WORST EVER SHOWING FOR THE BARISAN NASIONAL COALITION THAT HAS RULED FOR HALF A CENTURY, WAS DUE TO HIM LEADING AT THE HELM. A GATHERING OF MORE THAN 1,000 SUPPORTERS GREETED ANWAR IN A RALLY WELCOMING HIS RETURN TO POLITICS. POLICE INTERRUPTED ANWAR AFTER HE HAD ADDRESSED THE RALLY FOR NEARLY TWO HOURS AND CALLED FOR HIM TO STOP THE GATHERING SINCE THERE WAS NO LEGAL PERMISSION FOR THE RALLY. THE MAHATHIR’S CRONIES FELT THREATEN AND TAKE HOSTILE ACTION AGAINST ANWAR IN RETRIBUTION FOR SOMETHING CALL “THE TURTH†WHERE IS THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN MALAYSIA.
THE BOTTOM LINE, WE AS A MALAYSIAN, SHOULD ASKED THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER MAHATHIR AND THE CURRENT PRIME MINISTER ABDULLAH AHMAD BADAWI TO COME CLEAN AND TELL THE TURTH – FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY.
WISE UP MALAYSIAN IF YOU STILL LOVE YOUR COUNRTY.

Salam DSAI
Why both the Kiasu PeeM and Kiasu DPeeM must go now because these liars who blocked and spinned lies & deceits in the MSM of the non-existent Oil Subsidies and hike the fuels prices to revenge against the Rakyats for their Poll Defeats in losing the 5 States & 2/3 majority in Parliament, cannot rule for long as they have destroyed the BN and lost the trust of all the Rakyats??? This is why Tun Dr. Mahathir is always correct, they must be removed with a surgical knife immediately internally or externally.
Why the Malaysian Police is more interested in the allegation of DSAI than those against of DPeeM Najeeb??? Also, the Malaysian Police has now been tarnished by not serving the Rakyat’s interests but instead becomes the tools for the Kiasu BN to cling on to Power by bullying the ordinary citizens fighting for their basic rights!!!
Also, why hasn’t the police found the source from where did the C4 came from and the culprit C4 expert who placed the charges and detonated the C4 on the Mongolian Woman, there could not be many real sources of the C4 and nor are there many C4 experts in Malaysia unless there is a conspiracy to cover up. Also, the Immigration Entry record of Altantuya’s coming into Malaysia was deleted but the Police did not get the Immigration Personnel Culprit who has had the access into the Immigration Computerized System for the Entry Records to have done this in his conspiracy with the Murderers, there could not be many who have authorized access to these Entry Records. The Malaysian Police has now become the tools of those in power to suppress the truths even Murder.
The Malaysian Police are all not only bullying thugs but also all are cowards who are cowed by the mighty high ranking BN politician and are cowed into covering up for him. The DPeeM has been denying that he ever met, nor never met Altantuya.
The Malaysian Police are nothing but all bullying thugs who know how to bully the ordinary citizens fighting for their basic rights like fighting for the access road in Cheras and also bullying the ordinary citizens who recently protested the fuels price hikes, which did have a domino effect resulting in price hikes in foods and essentials, which should not have been hiked in the first place as well because Malaysia is the nett producer and exporter of Crude Oil and we should be enjoying the windfall profits from Crude Oil like all Oil Producers and Exporters if the Country’s resources are not badly mis-managed by the greedy, corrupted, incompetent & moronic high ranking Kiasu BN politician who helm the BN Government to hike the fuels prices not out of necessity but out of greed in order to plunder, cheat & rob the Malaysian Citizens of their Purchasing Power & reasonable cost of livelihood in revenge for their GE12’s losses to the opposition. Throw out that despotic moronic rotten tyranny soonest possible to stop the rot now otherwise Malaysia’s wealth could be decimated in no time with such chronic rotten tyranny. So therefore in order to desperately cling to Power they now attempt to use the Police to do their bidding by whatever dirty tricks and cook up false evidences & to hide PI Balasubramaniam, & to put RPK & DSAI away to save themselves harmless by their under-handed tactics shamelessly as can be seen by planting Saiful to work for DSAI in-order to trap and remove him at the slightest chance. Where has natural justice in Malaysia gone, perhaps most probably gone to the dogs, if Kiasu BN remains in power???
Also PAS was not born yesterday to be taken in by the Kiasu Umno’s ploy to make use of the full support PAS is getting from the Rakyats of all races because of their present status in the fold of their membership in Pakatan Rakyat. If they leave Pakatan Rakyat to join the Kiasu power crazy Umno in an evil alliance it is obvious their popularity will be decimated in no time.
See for yourself whether the DPeeM of Malaysia is lying that he never met Altantuya:-

No matter they (Umno and BN) they say about Mr Anwar including as an agent to United States, for me Mr Anwar has befriended with all levels of international leaders over the past (even before he assumed duty as a minister in early 80s). His international relation has surpassed the political boundaries and ideological differences. He was once a close friend to Dr Rajii Al Faruque, a prominent and respectable islamic thinker who lived in US and be a lecturer in a university in Pittsburg when he was assassinated in early 80s. Dr Yusof Qardawi who is once banned by US government to embark the States due to high suspicious from them that he supported Al Qaeda, still becomes his close friend, Nelson Mandella knows him well. This is just a few examples.
This trait of leadership necessitate the need for a country like Malaysia, a member of Non Aligned Movement (NAM) since Tunku’s administration. The objective for Malaysia to be in NAM is to demonstrate that it befriends with all the countries. And what Mr Anwar has been doing is in tandem to this and I do not see any wrong to do that. During Clinton’s time, he was blamed that he is very close to Al Gore and when Al Gore lost hid bid to be POTUS (The president of the United States) to Bush, the most happiest man in Malaysia is Mr Mahathir. But turned out to be in unhappy again when Bush Administration still conveyed its sympathy him during 1998 trial.
So stop blaming him as an agent to US. It just a mere bullshit from a desperado (Umno and BN).

Excellent piece by Mary Kissel. Looks like you thoroughly charmed the lady, brother Anwar! But, then, who but a self-serving potato-head wouldn’t be charmed by your intelligence, eloquence and – most importantly – your robust ethical core? Bless you for taking on this role, Anwar. I for one am grateful that because you love Malaysia as much as I do – and because you are so well positioned to be the PM who leads us out of the benighted and corrupt dead-end created by Mahathir’s megalomania – I don’t have to jump into the political arena myself. Instead, I’m helping by visualizing a smooth takeover by Pakatan Rakyat, resulting in truly a new dawn of enlightenment and political maturity in this fair land.

A’kum DSAI,
Alhamdulillah syukur. Majoriti rakyat bersama Pakatan Rakyat. Teruskan wadah perjuangan.

Mr. Anwar Ibrahim is the quintessential man for all seasons in a complex but mercifully non-violent society like Malaysia – the only politician who has the charm, the courage and the stamina to see through the changes necessary for a Malaysian Malaysia that even the redoubtable Lee Kuan Yew in Malaya in 1964 failed to do.
I wish him all success.

Good evening Dato Seri.
Just not too long ago, our present gov say they will not get involve in the case & leave it to the PDRM. Today & since, we keep hearing from the gov about the global-joke so-do-me case. It’s like they have no more important matters to look into. Are the conspirators sweating in the underpants that they do not have credible evidence? Otherwise, what is the PDRM waiting for, other than intimidate? Think it is 2-3 weeks past, everyone on the street is getting fed-up with this so-do-me case. Gov is just dragging & dragging. They have become a headless chicken in the management of the country’s economy. Where are the FDIs???
We are more interested to know how the gov is going to help us put rice on the table & how the PDRM is going to reduce the ever rising crime rate on the street. We don’t need BN to tell us to vote them for a safe & secure future. That’s the job of the PDRM & job of the gov of the day! Otherwise, return all the tax-payers wages.
Don’t tell us to change lifestyle…unless the gov expect everyone to “balik kampung tanam jagung” as we use to sing in the good ole school days. KL & PJ will be ghost cities. We will all go back to Malaya of the 1950s. Gov & cronies can still be rich from Petronas & Palm Oil money. No need development, etc etc. Guess this is what the present gov prefer. Only to enrich themselves, not to sustain the growth & economy of the country. Send us back to the kampung.
I am please to know, as i was very curious, the reason why so-do-me father do not appear in the press or news & always a lawyer & uncle pet (or aunty pet…rpk also said so!!!). RPK wrote another interesting article in malaysiatoday regarding this. The identity of so-do-me daddy. Very interesting revelation. No wonder his name & photo was never revealed by the mainstream media/press – only always referred to by lwayer as “saiful father”. The father with no name. It is sad indeed. If true, first the father deserted this kid. Then returns to use him in this conspiracy. How cruel & totally un-Islamic. Using one’s own flesh & blood for political masters to fill up the bank account. Not human at all.
The problem with our country now is not the grass that needs trimming. It’s the roots of corruption that need uprooting & the tree of corruption, completely chopped off. This tree was seeded over 30 years (or more) ago. It is truly an uphill (mountainous) task. Pray the good lord give you the strength & wisdom in your battle, for a better Malaysia. We truly need a new high quality seed & tree that grows to set a new platform to launch Malaysia to a new vision. 2020 is blinded at the moment. We need to look at 2050! We need to be shortsighted & longsighted at times.
Stay cool :)

GOD AND GOOD PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS BE WITH DSAI IN HIS STRUGGLE AGAINST THE ARRAY OF EVIL FORCES THAT HAVE CONSPIRED TO DENY THE PEOPLE OF MALAYSIA THE KIND OF LEADERSHIP THAT THEY WANT AND NEED..FIGHT ON DSAI UNTIL ALL THE PEOPLE’S ENEMIES ARE VANQUISHED. I stand on the middle ground, I will very much like to see those critics of Anwar, can convince
me that they have a better choice. I will most certainly give him/her the due consideration. Singing old tunes, finding faults against him is not a strong argument, in fact, it is stale and self-defeating. As for the present two offer to us, it is a mockery to the country and an insult to our intelligence. As for now, my choice is Anwar as PM, I am prepared to take this chance.

There’s no wisdom anymore from PM AAB simply because he has announce 2010 to surrender the power to his deputy – call it as semi-retired by now and who’s going to listen to a PM whos such a manner. He can’t change the system in fact he refuse to accept the changes that call upon him. Sooner or later things has to change and he knows it very well because he himself change – everydody change and in life we have to change to improve for the better.
Look what happen to the Police, no control over them espescially their conduct. Changes is necessary to IMPROVE but not in AAB government, not in Najib or BN candidate. It should be the Opposition Party to rule and make swift changes, insyaallah Malaysia boleh. PKR boleh!!! Amin.
