Arab News - Madinah: Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim yesterday called on Muslim countries to remove obstacles in the way of investments in the development of a knowledge-driven economy. Anwar was speaking on the second day of the three-day Knowledge Economy Forum here.“We urge the development of science because that is what our religion encourages us to do. No society can develop unless it marches forward while keeping pace with global economic and technological advances,†Anwar said, while presenting his paper.
Anwar said he hoped Madinah would once more become a world center for knowledge and culture where students could flock.
The former deputy prime minister added that impartial application of law and bureaucratic transparency are the factors that attract huge international investments.
The Malaysian leader warned against technology becoming the monopoly of a particular group or people.
“Technological know-how should be distributed evenly among the poor and the rich, and should not be the property of any particular group,†he said.
He said he believes that Saudi Arabia, with its financial resources and unswerving determination, could attract the world’s best brains to become a center of knowledge economy.
He also warned against a cultural catastrophe, which may befall several Asian countries because of their negligence in developing their vast human potential in education.
“We should not be content with the knowledge of the West or the East. We must acquire knowledge from all sources as long as it doesn’t contradict our religion and traditions,†he said.
In his work paper, Stein Sture, head of postgraduate studies at Colorado University, stressed the importance of promoting research studies in realizing national progress.
Prince Faisal ibn Abdullah, chairman of the Al-Aghar Strategic Think Tank Group, also reiterated the importance of the Kingdom’s decision to heavily invest in a knowledge economy
“In the new world order, competitiveness depends on a country’s ability to employ its human capital as a major source of originality and inventiveness. It is high time we invested in this vast resource,†Prince Faisal said. He said that in order to develop the human potential required by a knowledge economy, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has allocated SR13 billion for training, SR9 billion for education, SR4.5 billion for telecommunication, and SR8 billion for research and development at the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology.
Al-Aghar is the organization that was instructed by King Abdullah to undertake a comprehensive study with the help of the Islamic Development Bank on ways to develop the Kingdom into a knowledge-based society. Other speakers yesterday included Dr. Musa M. Nordin from Malaysia; Dr. Khadijah Shamsuddin, a researcher on maternal health, child health, reproductive health and women’s cancers in Malaysia; and Dr. Najeeb Al-Haq from Pakistan.
Major topics, which are to be discussed at the forum, include high-tech innovation and creativity in the Muslim world, strategies to decrease genetic disorders, knowledge infrastructure development through information and communications technology (ICT) and engineering, and bioinformatics-based investment in the Kingdom.
Addressing the opening session on Sunday, Amr Al-Dabbagh, governor of the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA), outlined his organization’s strategy to attract international investment to knowledge-based industries at Madinah’s Knowledge Economic City (KEC).

education, an important element in building human capital
I support what you say about education. I just hope if ever you come to power, Science and Maths remain taught in English.
There is no short cut to progress. Do not pamper our people in the wrong way. The wise choice, the rational choice, the intelligent choice for Maths and Science is English. You cannot go against the trend in the world.
Observe this as a favour to our children and our children’s children.
Saudara Anwar,
Proud of you, DSAI!! Keep fighting and educating people of tru and honest politics…
Way to go! My salaam to DSAzizah…….
You truly do us proud, Sir. The day you are at the helm of this beloved country of ours is the day we Malaysians will be able to hold our heads up high internationally.
Cetusan hati saudara Muhammad ada asasnya.Perkara serupa berlaku dimana-mana,apabila perjuangan hakiki disaluti keegoan diri, kepentingan peribadi mengatasi kehendak perjuangan.
Jangan buat kami meluat… tolong perbetulakan.
it is quite fitting that you have stressed the importance of scientific education towards our colleagues in the middle east.
as you know, the rising price of oil has brought a great boon to the nations in that region. the world’s dependence on oil has made rich sheikhs, super rich. which leads me to my next point of trying convince oil-rich Muslim nations to invest in scientific research that will alleviate our dependence on oil.
the planet needs us to find more efficient, renewable energy. the world’s oil supply will dry up one day and if we don’t do something about reducing our dependence on petroleum, then we’ll be in deep trouble.
but how can you convince people who are becoming wealthy due to the need for oil to invest in education and research that will reduce our dependence on it? that’s the challenge.
we need to invest our efforts in scientific education and research towards renewable energy sources. while Muslim coutries are in a position of wealth, we must prepare for what lies ahead when the oil that provides us with that wealth runs out and find ways on how we can use our knowledge as the strength of our economies.
Jazakallah Khair
Kami org luar hanya mahukan DS membela nasib kami yang tertindas, sebarang isu dalaman PKR/PAS mahupun DAP haruslah ditangani dgn bijak, jgn sampai org2 ameno/bee end mengambil kesempatan, sbb mereka memang pakar dlm memutarkan-belitkan fakta.
wassalam..
For a country to be great, their leaders MUST at all costs incur a large portion of their Budget
on education for their citizens.
As an example, look at the statistics on education published, the Jews spend a great portion of their National Income on Education. That is the reason the bloody jews are the smartest people in the world. The jews are the ones known to all are the ones controlling America in return America tries to control the world, though the Jews are small in numbers
All the past and even present Noble pize winners are Jews. The Jews despise the Arabs and the Muslims deem them to be lazy, uneducated and to be bullied.
EDUCATION THE BEST YOU CAN BE
I am just an ordinary malaysian born in the year of our country’s independence until the last 10 years or so , i was extremely proud of this fact being a post independent baby however these days i kept wandering what happen to MY country? Even after an election the country is still stuck in a pre election crisis mode with both sides treating the country as a plane that’s on auto pilot flying into HEAVY storms will the pilot and co pilot are arguing who should hold hold the plane’s joy stick not realising the the CRASH just ahead. Now i read from the article that i have copied below that we are producing idiots that disguise themselves as graduate students issuing these statements, I hope all of you are proud of yourself especilly Mahathir , i would even call him tun as it would probably cause me to be send to hell together with him for even having the slightest spark of respect for him as these idiots that call themselves students are his creation ( in MHO )
please read the said article and wake up to fly the plane before it crashes and perish everyone on board !
This is a letter from University Malaya’s head of graduates to all the students (maybe of a certain race only).
Here it is below! For those not bothered in stressing your brains too much in understanding the written malay, I’ll do the translation:
Therefore, I as the Head of Graduates of University of Malaya would like to advice all our fellow graduates of University of Malaya to combine forces and prepare ourselves together with all the necessary knowledge and preparation before we continue our fight in the actual battle field. This advice implies mainly to our Malay Graduates. We must treasure the sacrifices made by our ancestors which tried so hard to ensure that Tanah Melayu ( Malay Land ) is free from the intrusion of alien races. We must not fall into the category of those who forgets their roots until they will be taken over by other races. Graduates must prove themselves that we are capable and the best choice to take over the throne of governing the country in the future. This implies with the theme of MPMUM Progressive, Dynamic, Professional. There is nothing more important that can compared to our always-sensitive and improving Graduates. I also would like to advice all Malay Graduates to prepare ourselves in facing all sorts of unpredicted challenges that may occur in near future, relating to the rise of our fellow citizens, in particular to the non-Malay races. Don’t let ourselves slack and allow our “enemies under the blankets to attack us” (direct translation from the Malay idiom). Don’t allow our Malaysia to fall into the hands of those who are irrelevant.
