Peluncuran Buku Dr Syed Husin Ali

Semalam saya diberi penghormatan meluncur dan membedah buku The Malays: Their Problems and Future karya sarjana, tokoh politik dan pejuang rakyat Dr. Syed Husin Ali (SHA).

Sambutan hebat sekali dari pelbagai kalangan - MB Selangor Tan Sri Khalid, Azmin Ali, Manickavasagam, Sasterawan Negara A Samad Said dan pelukis Syed Ahmad Jamal, puluhan bekas tahanan politik termasuk Said Zahari dan C C Yong.

Penerbit The Other Press, Koyakutty memulakan acara dan diikuti tokoh politik veteram Rajakumar mengupas singkat buku tersebut.

sha

———

In his preface to the first edition (1978), Syed Husin Ali (SHA) said “The Malay people are now at an important crossroad(s)”. And may I venture to add that the Malays are now at a defining moment of their history!

SHA represents “the other”, and not the dominant political mode in Malaysia. His ideas were marginalized and remain subaltern to use Edward Said’s description. But he was adamant and persisted.

The book is not an academic treatise but written with a conscience and a passion.

The neofeudal syndrome has become a means of patronage and control. The Malays need a renewed surge of confidence to explode the myth of dependency, the insecurity and paralysis, dispensing inferiority complex perpetrated by the colonial masters and their surrogates.

We must disenthrall ourselves from this myth and fetters. The Malays and Bumiputras require opportunities and space so that genuine Malay talent and creativity can flourish. And finally it is about justice for all Malaysians.

    Maaf, terkeluar tajuk.

    http://www.tipshartanah.com/blog/2008/02/17/balai-polis-rumah-kedai/

Tengok air muka pun hiii…. Bukan nak menghina. Tapi itu la balasan Allah Taala.

Klu kat atas dunia pun dah nampak jelik, entah la….

Musa Hassan, lu ada lagi setahun. Pulihkan la polis, bukan untuk imejnya, tapi keredaan Ilahi.

Ni saja peluang dakwah lu. Tapi kepala gangster tu lu buang dulu!

People say Anwar supported NEP before and now he has changed and therefore a chameleon. You see, this is how fools operate. It is like a foolish man seeing his house on fire and standing there without acting. He throws his hands into the winds. “What can I do…it is God’s will.” Today, Malaysia needs a new direction but the fools resist change and say “this is how it has been…this is…this is thatt…”

First of all, I challenge anyone to show whether Anwar Ibrahim benefited from NEP as an individual. Just state one share, a single permit, a single plot of land, a single contract etc, etc that Anwar got or his children got as a result of NEP. Therefore, Anwar’s support for NEP was moral because it was destined to benefit the Malays in general despite its shortcomings even back then. However, after DSAI’s assassination, the regime’s only way of surviving was through desperate attempts to buy the entire nation and silence its people and rape all the institutions. In this case, NEP became a tool of political expediency and absolute control. It created Lingams, Tans and Fairuzs and a bunch of imbecile Malays who don’t see beyond their nose. Sitting there crying, susceptible to manipulation, conspiracies which are cooked by all dictators across the globe when faced with an uprising and a people whose lives are begged to handouts and cheating.

Therefore, there is absolute moral, Islamic and humane duty to correct the situation. There is need for a new wisdom. If yesterday Anwar supported a certain policy, if we realise that it is wrong or was wrong, what do we do? Stand there and insist on the wrong in the name of consistency? That’s how buffoon operate and perceive life. But for intelligent people, they act and change the idea and come up with a new one and create a new widsom. Note that this is how great minds operate. Note that is how Islam wants its people to overcome challenges by devising ways and means of meeting the answers to their challenges. Renewal including religion is what defines progress and purpose of life. That’s why the Prophet (pbuh) said: “Wisdom is the lost property of the believer, so wherever he finds it he has a better right to it.” In other words, if yesterday you were wrong, to show that you have wisdom, you have to oppose what you have supported yesterday. This is how moral beings do things. This is consistency of the truth and the morality of life and the higher purpose of exsistence. AMENO and Be End (BN) marauding hordes say Anwar is a chameleon. Indeed they are because they have no wisdom and they don’t appreciate the higher purpose of life. Faggots!

Congrats to Syed Husin. Unfortunately, you live in a land where wisdom and intellectualism are looked down upon. This is NEP’s product and AMENO’s desperate tactics to sustain its power, but everything has its appointed term and the end is near. Glory to God.

DSAI, a lot of people is counting on you. I hope Islam will again be stronger in malaysia.

i just hope Islam in malaysia would not be like in spain, turkey or bosnia. do not repeat the same mistakes as they did.

    faizal,

  14. 14 themalaypress@yahoo.com Jun 16th, 2008 at 1:06 am

  15. 15 Halik Zaman Jun 16th, 2008 at 1:43 am

Tadi ade terbaca bila penulisan Pak Lah nak keluarkan. Erm.. saya rasalah takkan keluar kot sbb dia mana tahu menuliss. Kalaupun dapat menulis mungkin pasal nak menipu duit minyak, bini baru, percutian, islam hadhari, modal insan, tidur, KJ, Scomi, & DUIT & DUIT & DUIT & DUIT…………………..

Dato Seri, I agree - the Malays are at a crucial crossroad that is at a defining moment of their history. Which way the Malays take will be critical over the next few days, months and years.

Sadly, the NEP is a tool of those in power seeking to enrich themselves. It can be very positve for the Malays had it been implemented judiciously, religiously and most of all sincerely.

It is also sad that those in power constantly stirs up sentiments of the “non-Malays versus Malays” and other racially charged comments. Even our ex-PM is equally guilty of such acts. As a non-Malay, we accept the fact that there must not be great economic disparity between the Malays and non-Malays. Afterall, we are born and bred here and history has taught us that great disparity between people creates chaos if one group is deprived beyond a certain threshold.

No doubt the Malays’s economic and social status must be raised but not at the expense of the non-Malays. Why can’t the Malays’ status be raised without depriving the other races? Besides, the world is so globalized these days that it is now a case of Malaysia assimilating and competing in the world effciently and effectively and no longer a case of Malays versus the non-Malays and Malays rights.

Also, most Malays these days are no longer incapable, deprived and poor as widely made to us to believe by the govt in justifying the continuance of the NEP. The Malays that I know are very capable, intelligent and very capable of holding their own in their own career fields.

Dato Seri, we look forward to Pakatan and your goodself to remedy the situation. Hopefully you will not disappoint us.

Syabas Dr.

Syabas dan ucapan tahniah kepada sdra Dr.Syed Husin Ali dari PKR Sepanggar KK.

    Tahniah Dr SHA,

Melayu memang banyak masalahnya. Apatah lagi Melayu UMNO yang dah ditolak
oleh orang Melayu yang berjiwa Islam.

Melayu memang mempunyai masa depan jika menghayati ajaran Islam sepenuhnya.

I read the review in STAR of Professor {Emeritus ?] Dr Syed Hussin Ali PhD [SOAS], formerly holding Chair of Anthropology & Sociology UM.

And I ask a few very close friends who may have bought the book, for their comments.

I happen to have met Prof Syed Hussin Ali a couple of times and struck some conversation with him in the train and along corridor of a Hotel. I would greet good professors whenever I to come across them. We must give them their due respect .. [well not all of them, like the USM Economics Instructor, Amir for one ]

Personally, I have reservations about scholars like Prof Dr Syed Hussin, Kassim Ahmad and a few others who are somewhat influenced by “Socialism” that was and probably still is, the hall-mark of SOAS, LSE and a few other British Universities where they read their disciplines.

If right from the beginning, Malay Scholars who are NOT brought up in the shadows of their family traditions of Islamic Scholarship and surrounded by Kitabs; most likely, Malay Scholars tend to be overwhelmed and awed by the great European philosophers and their theories.

Mind you the whole lot of American philosophy was very much influenced by the crossing of European philosophers to the Ivy League universities.

Malay Scholars , for their lack in early education of Islamic Philosophy and reading of the Great Muslim Scholars and their Kitabs, would fall for the multitudes of European intellectual ideas which never seem to have a unifying elements and totally devoid of God-centricity or Revealed Knowledge.

Whatever theories such Malay Scholars propound will certainly lack that spiritual dimension that can bring the reader back to his/her fitrah; more importantly, the Malay readers.

Professor Dr Syed Hussin Ali’s book will fall into the level slightly higher than Mahathir’s Malay Dilemma or even of the Malay Surgeon but certainly fall very very short of the category of a truly Malay-Islamic Scholarship.

Until and when Malay Scholars admit of their Worldviews, the Malay readers are better re-directed to the simple book written by Professor Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas of his Inaugural Speech in UKM …. an excellent treatise of the Malay Identity !

“luncur” sounds weird when used in this context because its not used often enough! I agree that the Kamus Dewan is ambiguous on this matter, but I feel these expressions should be used more often. Another question though: “rucing” and “runcing”. Am I missing something here?

  26. 26 abgtua Jun 16th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Dulu pun DSAI pernah meluncurkan Bahasa Baku tapi tak berapa berjalan lancar. Siapa boleh lupa ucapan DSAI semasa beliau menjadi Menteri kewangan dulu. Yg paling saya ingat ialah istilah yg digunakan ‘petrol tanpa plumbum” (disebut plumbum).Rasa janggal sbb biasa kita sebut ‘pelambam’

  27. 27 Sicksense Jun 16th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

haha… kalau macam tu ejaan silambam (disebut slam bunk) haha… bahasa menunjukkan bangsa,… bukan bangsa itu bahasa ..bahasa baku la paling layak untuk org malaysia … baru menunjukkan semangat kekitaan.. bukan aku…

  28. 28 >;;;pOOran;;= Jun 16th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

I think the DBP is not doing enough to introduce these expressions and words into common usage. Its not just the beauty of the language, but expanding ones vocabulary. It helps the brain form new connection, a neurologist would say :)

Once DSAI is in power, DBP should be disconnected from political interference and get some serious programs to ensure people actually speak this beautiful language as an everyday language.

Kepada ANTI-ANWAR dan lain2 yang benci sangat ANWAR,

Korang jangan guna minyak yg DSAI akan turunkan nanti.. aku mewakili semua penyokong DSAI tak akan halal pasal kau kutuk orang yang nak tolong kau..

    Ikan Lepu dan penyokong DSAI
    Teruskan perjuangan

  30. 30 abgtua Jun 17th, 2008 at 9:48 am

Jgnlah terlalu emosional saudara MACH3955.

  31. 31 Sicksense Jun 17th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

haha.. rakyat ambik “rebate” RM625, goverment “rembat” RM berjuta-juta nak support Corridor…
aku tak nak amik rebate ada unsur “riba” haha… aku guna kayu api nak idupkan kereta… nak adjust kasi laju cuma cucuk-cucuk je ..

  32. 32 ikanlepu Jun 17th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Haa… ikanlepu nak bawa kayu gak, tolak-tolak roda skuter tu kasi golek.

Nak laju, hahh… tolak-tolak ngan kaki!

    Penat, balik umah makan ubi.

Sebab pemimpin suruh rakyat ubah cara hidup!

    Biar depa je muntahkan darah.

  33. 33 Suhaimi Said Jun 17th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Bukan kerana apa, ana rasa I am too small to give any comment. I just want to say that I was there when the book was launched. It is beyond my intellectual capability and ability to comment on SHA’s book, nor his speech during the launch, and I must say that Anwar’s launching speech was completely beyond my ability to comment.

That night when I was surrounded by seas of intellectuals, I was comletely drowned, but I was happy to say that I met with all my long lost friends like Kassim Ahmad, Mohideen Kader, Gurdial Singh, Dr Sanusi Osman and to my utmost happiness, I met Said Zahari, whom I adored as my hero in the struggle for justice.

To Anwar, this is the man who not only qualifies as a leader and intellectual, but an asset to be lost by this Nation, if he were not appointed and accepted as the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

This man, Dr Syed Husin Ali, why don’t Selangor appoint him as a Senator, what kind of quality you need? He is a teacher to many scholars, and politically, he has been fighting and struggling for the people since his young age, and he is now the Deputy Presiden of PKR, what else do you need, come on Selangor.
