Malaysia’s Anwar vows to oust govt, cut fuel price

DUBAI (Reuters) – Malaysian opposition figurehead Anwar Ibrahim said on Friday he would press ahead with a campaign to topple the government and would cut fuel prices if he took power.

Anwar, who says he has parliamentary backing to bring down the government, said his supporters included senior defectors from the ruling coalition. He said he also had growing support from the oil-producing areas of Sabah and Sarawak.

“We do have the numbers but the issue is when to move on the no confidence vote… It can be weeks to months,” he said.

“We have adequate numbers to secure a simple majority in the house. What we need, of course, is a comfortable majority … There is a general sentiment among the general population wanting this change.”

The minor parties of Sabah and Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, ensured Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s Barisan Nasional coalition clung to power in a March 8 election.

But Barisan suffered the heaviest setback in its near-unbroken 50-year reign since independence. It lost its two-thirds majority in the federal parliament and lost five states to the opposition, including its industrial heartlands.

Barisan now holds a 29-seat majority in the 222-member parliament. Sabah and Sarawak parties delivered 42 seats to Barisan but Anwar said the opposition was wooing lawmakers with promises of regional oil royalties and more representation at the political centre.

Anwar said inflation, economic mismanagement and fuel price hikes had turned the public against Abdullah, encouraging lawmakers to defect, but he declined to give names and numbers. “Very soon they will appear and be known in public,” he said.

Analysts say Anwar has repeatedly made claims to have enough votes to topple the government without showing any evidence.

Protests against an increase in fuel prices have been small and scattered so far, but pressure is building within Abdullah’s ranks for him to quit to restore confidence in the ruling party.

Anwar, a former deputy premier, said he would continue a campaign of protests against the government even if Abdullah quit to make way for his designated successor Najib Razak.

“It is not individual. It is not about Abdullah Badawi or Najib Razak. It is about the system,” he said.

Even before the fuel hikes, Abdullah’s popularity had been falling with voters unhappy over racial and religious tensions, rising crime and failure to honor a pledge to fight corruption.

Opposition parties won 82 seats in the March election, with Anwar’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat holding the biggest block of opposition seats at 31.

“I cannot accept an oil-producing nation like Malaysia increasing petroleum prices by 46 percent in one go,” Anwar said. “It … reflects an utter disregard for the welfare of people. I am committed therefore to reducing the price of petroleum.”

    YAB DSAI,

The full effects of Friday the 13th must have really hit them hard with you make such a vow and that too, on a foreign platform.

Although they try hoodwinking the Rakyat that you are bluffing, they know for a fact that you are NOT. They tried messing with your life but with Allah as your protector, it has been proven to be a futile effort.

Today, only mere rhetorics full of hot air is what they can afford to offer, though they are shivering deep down counting their days.

Pak Lah may have been INADEQUATELY advised by Analytical Economists and perhaps by some Applied Economists but I don’t beleieve they have developed a thoroughly robust and comprehensive Econometric Model of the Energy-Model of Malaysia.

At least it is an INFORMED decision … not some hotch-potch KELINTUNG by our Economics professors or MIER … show us .

    Akum DSAI,

    Jadi apa nak dibuat sekarang?

    **

Jadi, mustahak kami kurangkan jurang kekayaan rakyat kita.

Tapi saya janji… subsidi minyak TIDAK MEMBAWA KITA LEBIH DEKAT KEPADA MATLAMAT INI! Setiap liter minyak dibakarnya, lebih banyak duit kerajaan dibakar… jadi kalau kita terus pakai subsidi, duit kerajaan dibakar membela ORANG KAYA!!!!

Saudara2 sekalian, percayalah saya, bila kitaorang benci sangat subsidi, bukan kerana kita kaya dan kita tak kisah pasal orang miskin… sebenarnya, kita inginkan sangat jurang kekayaan dikecilkan.

The Malaysia Bonus shall be channelled directly into the worker’s EPF account and shall be available for immediate withdrawal.

    1. Those earning less than RM3,000 per month but at least RM2,400 will receive RM300
    2. Those earning less than RM2,400 per month but at least RM1,800 will receive RM600
    3. Those earning less than RM1,800 per month but at least RM1,200 will receive RM900
    4. Those earning less than RM1,200 per month will receive RM1,200

Yg baru bersara nak pergi melancung, pergilah. Yg syok tengok DVD, belilah TV besar sikit (tak payah pergi pawagam, mau cari parking pun bakar minyak). Yg benar2 perlu guna banyak minyak, gunalah; tapi yg tak perlu guna banyak minyak untuk sara diri, janganlah, kan minyak mahal? Buat apa nak pergi merayau-rayau? Kalau minyak mahal mungkin masalah mat rempit pun hilang!

    **

Begitulah pandangan saya.

    Hi Mr Int,
In response to your log on June 14th, 2008 at 1:17 am:
According to your plans you want subsidies to be abolished and introduce this ‘yearly bonus’ scheme.
But lets do more in-depth calculation:
    RM 1200 / 12 = RM100 per mth
    RM 900 / 12 = RM75 per mth
    RM 600 / 12 = RM50 per mth
    RM 300 / 12 = RM25 per mth

RM25 or even RM100 doesnt get you many items from the groceries at our current market when subsidy is still going on.
If the subsidies are abolished, RM100 can be deem worthless…!!!
I wonder what is the difference between your scheme and RM650 scheme from BN.

There is no attraction to those skilled or professionals whose income is above RM3000 to stay in Malaysia anymore.
If our income is above that bracket, we loose out on bonus, we pay higher tax than any other income group, but hello, we feel the pinch as well…
Why should we stay in MY when other countries are offering more money and prices are not as ridiculous ravaged by inflation as high as in MY?
Malaysia is supposed to be blessed with abundance.. so is it wrong for Malaysians to enjoy the bounty of the harvest in simple term, cheaper petrol prices?

I know you are still working on this calculation whatsoever, but i personally dont think you can justify the amount for rebate/bonus to malaysian based on income as you can never quantify the amount solely based on what we have enjoyed when everything in the market is relatively cheaper with the subsidy as we have enjoyed as a blessed nation…

I sincerely put this forth so that you will take my opinion, as a humble citizen, into consideration when proposing ideas to general public…

PS: I wouldnt mind the concept of DSAI about taking 20% of Petronas’ earnings and as subsidy for the nation. I think that is brilliant…
Prices of petrol goes up, our earning from petrol goes up, the amount of subsidy from 20% goes up. Vice versa. Petrol price in MY can still be stabilised. Now this is what i called the guru of economics… You must talk some convincing sense to the public as we the new generation of Malaysians are not ‘frogs in the well’..

    Namaste,
    Cedric

I hope it comes to materialise. Too much anxiety you know. How much I wish to see PR in Seri Perdana, insha Allah. Anyway, once you take over power insha Allah, pliz streamline all the ministries and create some news ones. I have these suggestions.

    1. Decongest the PM’s Office (department) by seperating the ministries under that office. We have Minister in the PM’s Department in charge of Islamic Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs, Law Affairs, Economic Planning Unit Affairs, and etc. Therefore, decongest the office by creating:

    a) Ministry of Religious Affairs, Awkaf and Hajj. (Rather than Minister under PM Department)
    b) Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
    c) Ministry of Governance and Parliamentary Affairs,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
    d) Ministry of Economy and National Planning ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,

It will help a lot and any failure on the part of these ministries will not be put on your shoulders as it is done since they are all blamed to be under the PM’s direct watch. Give these ministries to effective comrades and will do a superb job and deliver. God is with you.

Hi Cedric, thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment.

I want to clarify one thing… what you described as “my plan” is not actually my plan, as I mentioned in my original comment, it is Tony Pua’s plan which I am suggesting we look at.

    1) “RM25 or even RM100 doesnt get you many items from the groceries at our current market when subsidy is still going on.”

Okay, the exact values can be studied further, in terms of what the people need and how much the budget can allocate. The main thing is, the distribution should be based on needs.

    2) “I wonder what is the difference between your scheme and RM650 scheme from BN.”

The difference is how one qualifies for the handout; it is not based on how big your engine is, it is based on how much income you make. It is more needs-based.

    3) “There is no attraction to those skilled or professionals whose income is above RM3000 to stay in Malaysia anymore.”

This is a common criticism against any measure that attempts to “take from the rich to give to the poor”. The situation is not as simple as that; you can’t say just because the government wants to help the poor that it will antagonize the rich and they will run away. Many developed countries do have high taxes for the richer members of their community, and although it does lead to improper accounting practices in some cases, generally it gives the government a means to provide good public services… and the whole community accepts it.

More importantly, as I described in my previous comment, the present situation benefits the rich more than it benefits the poor. Do you feel this situation should continue? This will merely aggravate the large disparity in wealth that the country presently suffers. I am generally not in favor of measures that take from one group to give to another, but we have a runaway income disparity that must be treated.

If Malaysia wants to retain it’s talent, the solution is meritocracy… the best people getting the contracts, and doing a good job, and creating more jobs. Inflation is not pleasant, but it is not what kills someone’s love for their country.

    4) “Why should we stay in MY when other countries are offering more money and prices are not as ridiculous ravaged by inflation as high as in MY?”

I don’t think that is actually true. Inflation is a problem in many parts of the world now, including the developed world. In some places not only is there inflation – on top of that people are losing their homes and jobs.

And once again, I feel it’s pointless trying to “address” the brain-drain problem without looking at the root causes:

    a) lack of quality education, forcing some students overseas.
    b) lack of meritocracy and efficiency when it comes to implementation of government initiatives.

To close the brain-drain, (a) and (b) must be addressed. Economic fundamentals are important too, but “low” inflation through subsidized petrol is, quite frankly, a lie anyway.

    5) “PS: I wouldn’t mind the concept of DSAI about taking 20% of Petronas’ earnings and as subsidy for the nation. I think that is brilliant…”

By that do you mean you want petrol prices to be reflect market prices, but with a 20% discount? That proposal is not too bad… but won’t it still lead to rising prices of oil? So this idea is kind of a compromise between where we were and the ideal of market prices. But, the problem remains, that the biggest beneficiary of the discount would generally be the rich. Nevertheless, it can be an effective intermediary step.

Pumping Petronas profits into oil subsidies is very appealing because it represents a continuation of the status quo, but my point is those old practices are killing the country: e.g. the Gini coefficient, which does show my point that oil subsidies help the rich more than the poor, thus leading to a wide gap in wealth… the largest in South East Asia. There can be no justice in such a situation.
